I just had an argument with a guy on another site about this very subject. His answer (challenge): "what would you do with them, Mark Corriston?"
His counter would apply, I guess, to Enterprise (WWII), Alaska, Vanguard, Warspite, Hartford, etc.

It sure is. all 3 ships I was on has either been sunk, scrapped or mothballed. Belleau-Wood LHA-3, Tarawa LHA-1 and Constellation CV-64. really pained me seeing the Wood sinking. A lot of important first in my life took part on her decks.

I served on Kitty Hawk from 70-72. I didn't get a picture of it, but the galley made a "birthday cake", about 18 ft long, shaped just like the ship, battleship gray and great detail, when it turned 10, everyone had a piece of it, on a big table in the hangar bay. So many memories, thanks, Michael.

The utter destruction of a proud fighting ship kills my soul. I served upon her from 7/71 - 2/75 and she was my home. I was on her for the 72’ Vietnam Campaign where several crew members died. I was there for the infamous riot in 72’. I was there in 73’ when the fire in the engine room killed several of my crew mates. I will never forget her into my death! 🇺🇸

Thank all of you for your service to this Nation. I was a kid but knew of this and all of the carriers growing up. It is sad to see such great ships scrapped. It would have been more respectful to go down like the Oriskiny adding to the aquaculture. It also is a powerful name in American history and should be resurrected again on a carrier. No more presidents names. They need to reflect American victories and celebrations, not politicians.

I was ship’s company aboard the Hawk in 1982-1985. We ran over a Soviet sub in March 1984 off of South Korea. We were the only American aircraft carrier to do that. Capt Rogers made admiral and we were famous! Rumor has it the sub captain was transferred to Siberia and was in charge of the ice making machine. We painted a little red sub on the side of the superstructure by the ship’s ribbons. ComNavAirPac made us remove it when we returned from WestPac/IO. Too bad they didn’t preserve the bow where we accidentally rammed the commie sub and ship it to the Naval Museum in Wash DC for historical preservation? 🤔😔😢 “Press On!” (👈 our motto)

    • @isekaiexpress9450

If the captain was "transferred to Siberia", the sub returned to base and that plate of steel with that red sign of pathetic American bravado was cut out and thrown in a trash now.

I know a person who works at the Bremerton yards where the Kitty Hawk was decommissioned. He told me that the ships were sold for the princely sum of one dollar, but she and her sister ships had to be towed to Texas to be scrapped. It costs a lot of money to tow a carrier that far.

She has always been close to my heart. When I began my Navy "career"
our company commander has served aboard the Hawk and got us a tour
aboard her. Later, I was stationed at North Island Naval Air Station
and a little later lived in Coronado as a civilian in the 90's. She and the Ranger,
and the "Connie"could be seen just down the street from first work and later home.
Still later I lived in Southworth WA, and those 3 boats as well as the "Indy"
were all berthed at nearby Bremerton.
And now....wow....now they are no more, except in memory.

Sad, but we can't save them all. Be thankful some survive as museums. I visited two such survivors recently. Back in the Fall, I visited the USS New Jersey and three weeks ago I stood dockside by USS Wisconsin. Both are in good shape and in good hands. USS New Jersey is going into drydock soon for some hull maintenance/preservation. It's a pretty cool event and I plan to go back to Philly to see it. They are offering drydock tours at a cost, of course, you get to walk underneath her. The ship is going back to its place of birth for the drydock work, the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. It goes back into the same drydock it was launched from in 1942. One of the tugs that towed it upriver on the day it was launched, still operates today. It will be present to escort the ship to drydock and back to where she resides in Camden NJ when the work is done.

Kind of sad to see it being broken up, but nothing lasts forever. Somehow it'd be worse to see it rusting away due to neglect. At least it will be recycled and still be useful this way. I was just showing my wife this video. A few months ago you had another video and I was able to see my old shop which was right under the flight deck, between cats 3 & 4. Well, it’s been completely destroyed and several deck down are now gone too. Such a shame. She should have been preserved and left in reserve status or a museum.

Thank you to all that served aboard the Kitty Hawk. A great ship that was eventually worn out after about 50 years of service. Many people wanted her preserved as a museum ship. But the reality is that as a super carrier sized warship, money and location become a problem. Even the USS Texas must be relocated to Galveston in order to increase tourism. As for the nuclear powered super carriers that are just now starting to be scrapped (Enterprise) the problem is the reactors. I would like to say that we should think about all the great ships of the United states navy that have carried our sailors and marines for the last century or more. Let us never forget them. For me personally, the one ship that should have been saved was the USS Enterprise CV6 from WW2.

I wasn't trying to make you look bad, not everyone that serves realizes the different classes. 4 Forestal class 59-62, 3 Kitty Hawk class 63-64 and 66, 1 Enterprise class 65, 1 Kennedy class 67, and 10 Nimitz class 68-77. Now we have the Ford class 78 with 3 more building/funded 79-81.

Thank you again very much Michael... I was just at Philadelphia Inactive Ship maintenance Facility last week, and when I was walking around was very surprised to see 4 "new" cruisers added to the fleet there. The frigates are slowly disappearing. Kennedy is there as it has been for a while now. there was a "new" LSD in the Navy yard as well. When I was commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy I remember the commissioning of that LSD and those 4 cruisers when they were the brand new ships in the fleet. and now it was very sobering to see them decommissioned awaiting disposition ... so I was fairly depressed after leaving the Philadelphia facility.
