For PS2, you can run the games at 2.25x resolution. PS2 games were rendered at 480p, and this screen is 1080p (1080/480=2.25). Anything higher is literally doing nothing but taxing the processor more.
You should mention what version Aether/NstherSX2 did you use. Just today Russ (RGC) mentioned that he did more testing and found out he did get better performance with NetherSX2 Classic (v1.5) than in his review (v.1.8)
@@mr-w4812 Right! This is using the AetherSX2 that came pre-installed on the RP5. I haven't made any adjustments within the app except raising the native resolution to 1080p.
Never grew up with a PS2, was always a Nintendo guy. Looking forward to experiencing some of these games for the first time! Thanks for the video, Ryan! 🍻🤘🏼🔥
One more idea for future videos is to compare the same game performance and battery life from different platforms as lightweight and AAA titles too, which are available on pc, mysterious console, android ports (star wars, lego games, diablo 2, witcher 3, stardew valley etc)
I am planning to release two videos soon, one of which is 'RP5 vs Switch' and the other is 'RP5 vs Steam Deck' and in those videos I'll compare the battery drain as well as many other things. Thank you for the feedback and recommendations!
@@RyanRetro1 I think that could be an interesting video maybe. To me they all serve different purposes at the moment. The switch is portable and plays switch games (duh). Doesn't exceed in much outside of that, and struggles at times with its own games lmao. Steam deck is closer to a laptop in terms of portability for me. Not quite as big as one, but it's not what I would consider to be very portable. Like I need to plan ahead if im taking it somewhere vs just grabbing a little gaming brick and tossing it in a bag as I head out. The fan was pretty loud and battery was kinda iffy. Ended up selling mine because I never really used it when I was at home. And I'm not going to be pulling that thing out when I'm in a doctor's waiting room lmao. (Idk if it's different now but you also couldn't download anything when it was asleep which was a HUGE HUGE negative for me). I have other issues with it but all around it's a neat device and great first go at that kinda thing from steam. Glad they aren't milking it and releasing a new side grade every year. RP5 kinda hits the sweet spot for me. Before I was using an Xperia play but it's battery got too swollen. Debated just getting another batt but figured I'd upgrade to something that wouldn't struggle with even psp games which let me to the rp5. It's powerful enough to handle anything up through the 6th gen of consoles (minus Xbox) and some capability beyond that. Like Linux stuff and whatever play store games you'd want. It's more compact than the steam deck which is nice. It's strong enough to do what I expect it to. But not strong enough that I have higher expectations for some games and spend more time tweaking settings vs playing. Like 50% of my steam deck time. It will be my little emulation device (+ maybe an android game here and there) and that's it. It's not trying to also be comparable to a laptop in any way. It stays in its lane and that's exactly what I want out of it.
Sly cooper wasn’t running at full speed that's why it felt like slow motion, I have a SD 778g chipset and also have the same problem, you could try underclocking in the settings cause that fixes this problem most of the time if the cpu is powerful enough.
That makes sense. It felt so slow. I'll try to work more on that game later when I have some time - I've got so many videos to work on that it's hard to dedicate a lot of time to one game right now.
Hey ! nice video again ! But is it necessary to run a game at 5x resolution ? I mean, de PS2 resolution is at 480p. a 4x will set the game in 4K (I guess?)... Is it worth to drain the battery as much ?
I am loving your videos. You are honestly, one of the most fun and most honest retro gamers. I hope you continue to go beyond RP5. With that said, you chose some very odd PS2 games haha.
Thanks a lot! I've been following retro game channels for years and a lot of them review the same few games every time (the ones that are notoriously hard to run). I'm not going to be doing that. I'm going to be reviewing the absolute bangers from my childhood as well as the craziest games I can find haha.
Definitely read through these comments and make the changes other people have suggested. Such as a different version of the emulator like nether, performance settings, etc. Would be interested in seeing you come back to some of these games that ran kinda iffy after to see the difference. Plus what might be the limit for normal performance mode and where you /need/ to actually bump up to high performance. If you want to interact with the community more you could request certain games to be played and tested too. Like in a community post or video, then gather up suggestions for a new video. Just free content milking for the short term lmao. Or during a livestream. Like personally id love to yo see how zone of the enders runs.
I've got a list of community suggestions to go through you can see in my 10 Days Later video - I'm taking the suggestions on board for future videos. Thanks for the ideas!

Ryan for Sly Cooper you can try EE Cycle Rate (Underclocking) 60% (-2) and EE Cycle Skip (Underclocking) Moderate Underclock (-2) at 1,75x on the RP4+ is pretty close to 60fps but in Software GPU rendered to achieve that result, maybe you can get better results on the RP5
Thank you for the helpful videos! Considering getting a Retorid Pocket for myself for Christmas, just trying to figure out if the 4 Pro would do me fine (Personally I like the look of the 4 more than the 5) or if I should get the 5. I did want to ask if docking the retroid pocket affects the performance on PS2 games at all? I'd love to play OG Silent Hill 2 on this on my tv but I think i saw something somewhere that docking takes some of the performance away. If you or anyone in the comments has any perspective on this either on the 4 Pro or 5, I'd love to hear.
You're welcome! Personally I'd highly recommend the 5 over the 4 Pro. The 5 has a much better screen, much better ergonomics, better driver support etc. The only thing the RP4 has is the look if you prefer it but you don't really see that when you hold it in your hands either. I'd recommend the RP4 if you want to display it on a shelf and the RP5 if you actually want to play games. That's just my opinion, though.
