This is literally just Zoro’s way of saying Luffy’s being too hard on himself about the Vegapunk thing. The rest of the crew had the same thoughts, Zoro is just more blunt than the others. This isn’t some big character moment. Zoro hates when Luffy isn’t at his best, the fact that usopp mentioned zoro specifically to say Luffy is ok ok now, shows me that zoro was probably the most concerned. Zoro knows Luffy is beating himself up over it and he shouldn’t because he did all he could. Oda just gave him an edgy way to put it. Could the wording have been better? Maybe, but the message stands the same. Theres nothing to discuss.

I think people are missing the point with Zoro. I believe he was being used to highlight how Luffy cares for others regardless of time spent with said individuals or allegiances. Luffy’s guide is his feelings where Zoro’s is strength and logic. Luffy doesn’t see titles he see’s feelings. Zoro is Luffy’s accountability partner.

Imo it’s the other way around. When Luffy recruited Zoro he made him see beyond his current perspective, as Luffy took him to new places, challenges and made him push himself harder to chase after his dream. Like everyone in his crew, Luffy made everyone better as people.
I agree but zoro made it known that he won't follow Luffy if he doesn't act as a captain does. Though I agree,the showing him the world is not the valid argument.
The crew made Luffy better as well. It’s not a situation where one party benefitted more. Two things can be true. They all needed each other equally. Luffy doesn’t get to where he is without Zoro and the rest.

The importance of promises/ a mans word is like half of zoros character. It still makss no sense for him to say that in this situation where luffy wasnt able to keep his promise.
it was an insincere promise that vegapunk reneged on and either sanji got him killed or it didn’t really matter because sanji already knew he would likely die.

I still don't think Zoro would have said it that way if he understood the fact that Luffy had this classified as making a promise. Both Luffy and Zoro are people who hold true to their word and take promises and declarations as very important. People keep thinking Luffy was sad because he misses Apple pops, but the reason is that he feels like he broke his promise. And if Zoro knew that in that way, I think he would be a tad more empathetic to it and understood why Luffy was so dour

@Skip_56 He wasn't around when Luffy declared it to Vegapunk or to Sentomaru. We have no idea if Luffy mentioned it during the mini time skip, and knowing Luffy, he probably didn't. So Zoro wouldn't know, but it paints it in a different context had he known.
Luffy needs Zoro to give him those tough love moments, but this wasn't one of them. It was just lack of communication. And the fanbase took it a bit far, either championing Zoro for saying it or accusing him of being too harsh. And the reality is Zoro was operating without all the info needed to make an accurate assessment of why Luffy feels how he does
I think of it in a different way. I think zoro is more angry with luffy moping than with him being sad. Like yeah , i know you are sad , but YOU fucked up. You didnt keep your promise. So dont mope and do something about it. Apologise and try to be better dont mope. Thats my take.

This feels consistent with Zoro's character to me.He's always been the one to remind Luffy that he's now this and that so he shouldn't do or act that way anymore.
Hopefully during the Elbalf arc we see Dragon finally make a move. Also, Luffy and zoro always needed each other.
Zoro saying this, is nothing different than how he acted in water 7, hes being the vice captain. Zoro obviously sees luffy as a Friend, but he also knows hes on a powerful crew, all he meant was that Luffy shouldnt let his emotions hold him down like that, luffy was in bed crying he wasnt even eating right, thats not luffy like, to zoro.

Could shanks have left a training program for the straw hats? The Red haired pirates could get information on all of them and tailor a haki regiment or something like that so we can know how they power up but we can also get a flashback that relates to their power ups.
The Zoro line is bad in all three variants. He has spent time with Yasuie in Wano and was deeply affected by his death, so he should be more understanding of Luffy grieving. I findit even worse for Jimbei not understanding Luffy, considering he saw him at his worst during Marineford, but oh well...
He spent time with yasui for more than a day, and he wasn’t sobbing or depressed eating/drinking like luffy is with vegapunk. Zoro just puts it into perspective, he is a yonko now and a yonko comes with a reputation and a target on your back. A lot of people are going to be dying around them moving forward especially since the world government is threatened by the mere existence of Luffy so in a way he is putting things into perspective. If he can’t take an old man dying he met for a day how about the people who are going to die in the final war who he’s known for much longer, try to understand from all angles don’t get too attached to a way of thinking cuz it’ll end up ruining the parts of the story for you.
Zorro needs to understand that Luffy isn't just another Yonko; he is Sun God Nika, the warrior of Liberation, so he's expected to have more empathy than someone like Kaido. I think no one filled him up with what Vegapunk said about Luffy, and I think he would need help understanding the JoyBoy concept. Another point is that Luffy always follows his promises, and this is the first time he has failed to deliver his promise to protect Vegapunk.
The line was in character for Zoro, but what I don't like about it is that he said that ABOUT Luffy but not TO Luffy, so it feels kinda jarring

Without Luffy, Zoro would not be as strong as he is. Luffy continues to challenge the strongest of the world which in turn pushes Zoro to grow. If King and Zoro were to swap crews, King would have won.

(If it is shiki) Blackbeard, caterina, doc q, lafitte, and avalo pizarro will be going to Mary geoise. Burgess and shiryuu will be going to wano to get Poseidon. I get what Zoro's trying to get through but the reason I can't help but feel put off by his comment is because of who Luffy is as a person.
Yeah he's a yonko and should have an attitude proving he is occasionally but the thing is, Luffy is someone who makes a promise and will see it through. To him all promises he makes hold the same amount of importance to him. So you'd think that Zoro, being around him for so long, would understand that key aspect of Luffy's character.
That and the "Can't deal with the loss of one old man" felt unnecessarily mean-spirited even for Zoro.
Zoro keeping the standards high for Luffy is great for the series. It keeps the ambition going.
I’ve been saying this since the beginning of Egghead that basically being a Yonkou is a totally new thing not only for Luffy but his crew as well.
Some of the politics and etiquettes that come along with being a Yonkou isn’t exactly set in stone but there are rules and certain ways a Yonkou should behave or portray oneself and one’s crew. Especially with how the marines and world government have their own rules on engaging a Yonkou, like needing permission from higher ups before they do so.
However, on the flipside Luffy is still only 19 years old which is an incredible feat for someone so young to be as powerful as he is and to be acknowledged as one of the 4 Emperors of the Seas. Luffy and his crew still have a lot more to learn and grow as a Yonkou crew going forward.
Zoro however, has always been recognizing that the crew and himself are going to have to keep pushing to get stronger because threats and so forth will only become more dangerous and difficult to overcome as they adventure further into the pirate world, like when he was telling the crew that they aren’t just children playing pirates that being a pirate is the life they are choosing to pursue.
Even when the Strawhats got their most recent bounties, Nami and Ussop were taken back by how much their bounties went up and realizing that they are major targets that they would even go after themselves for their own bounty lol.
Ppl need to chill out. It's just balance, luffy is who he is and zoro has that role to be zoro

Zoro is the character that grounds Luffy in his role as a captain and reminds him of his status. Luffy needs that and Zoro knows for the sake of everyone that its his role as a second in command to remind him that.

I feel like most people interpret punk hazard differently than I do, the way I saw it Zoro wasn’t necessarily telling only Luffy to take it more seriously but he was also reminding himself, if you look at Zoros demeanor it’s not like he’s really lashing out at Luffy, he looks pretty anxious in general, not sure if he himself is ready for the new world and needed to say his fears out loud but directed it at Luffy to not deter the rest of the crew, and I think sanji confirms my theory by even telling Zoro that he’s so hard on himself or something along that lines right after Zoro shouts at Luffy

So I'm not excusing Zoro, and I do think Oda took his "mean Zoro" troupe too far this time, what if this is leading to something? In Wano, Zoro said, "I'll even become the King of hell." What if, the more Zoro uses the King of hell state, the more cold he becomes? Slowly becoming the antithesis of Luffy, not in terms of becoming a future enemy, but the more goofy and happy go lucky Gear 5 makes Luffy, the opposite is happening with the King of hell state. This is definitely a stretch, but just food for thought. And i know Oden wasn't like this, but Oden didn't have this king of hell state.
i dont see the king of hell mode as anything other than his haki. and if his own haki "controls" his mood, than it kinda contradicts the idea of haki. what i mean is how does your will take over your will? doesnt really make sense to me.

If your will and your haki are the same thing surely the stronger your haki becomes the more you will tend towards the extremes of your character. Kinda how loofy becomes more goofy the stronger he is. Gear 4 transformation was kinda goofy with the bounciness, when even doffy commented about it. And now gear 5 with toon force.

Zoro has ALWAYS been a samurai that drinks. This isn't some new thing that he had strayed away from. The Straw Hat's mission was to get to Wano and BLEND IN while waiting for Luffy and the rest of the crew!! No one was being useful of whatever the hell you're trying to act like they were supposed to be. Franky was a carpenter, Usopp was a snake oil salesman, and Robin was a geisha. They were ALL just waiting on Luffy to get back from WCI ffs.

Elbaf being a training arc makes the most sense to me; in a few weeks on Wano Luffy showed insane progression. If they are training and dealing with stuff on Elbaf for lets say a week or so that would give us time for the other "Competitors" for the One Piece to make moves to catch up to the others or a World Event that's not attached to the Straw Hats and let the Straw Hats get stronger.

There are at least 7 different perspectives presented in this chapter about vegapunk's death. 3 of them are in one scene and I think that contrast is there on purpose. I can't say I understand the point of this, but I think the goal was to show the spectrum:
- Kizaru considers Vegapunk his bestie
- Franky presents the fact that they are lucky to get away with as few deaths as they did
- Jinbe shows a little bit of questioning about Luffy's feelings
- Zoro
- Nami or someone else apologizes to Lilith even though she didn't make the promise
- Luffy is depressed
- Lilith tries to enlighten Luffy and adjust his perspective
Like I said, it seems odd this is discussed so much, but I don't understand what Oda would be trying to tell us by doing that. My point is, I'm not sure everyone is supposed to be talking about only one perspective.
