Another Bargain or Bust Facebook Camaro?!? Low Mileage 1986 Z28 Tuned Port Injection! Will It Run?!?

- I've been on the lookout for a clean third gen Camaro for a some time and this one came up on Facebook Marketplace and seemed like a good deal. I made the deal and brought it home. Allegedly it was some undercover car out east aquired as part of a sting and only had 34k miles on it but had been sitting for years and needed a fuel pump to run again. Let's find out if that's the case and get this Camaro back on the road. If you'd like to own the car as shown in this video it can be yours for $1,500 USD. As always, thanks for watching!

When you flashed back to loading it in the barn, I seen that guy and was waiting to hear " Dan, DD Speed Shop here"
🗿💨 yep 😂
This guys videos are better😂😂
I’m crying
nope..
yeah he looks like this one guy that used to work for me back in the day, I wondered how he found his way home and back to work every day.
RPO code Z28 came out in 1967 with 602 examples built for the 1st model year.
No way?!? REally? Dang, I was way off.
@MortskeRepair And in 1968, because GM President Pete Estes wasnt sure if they were going to continue the Z28 homologation, some of the engineers had a '68 convertible optioned with RPO Z28 and gave it to Mr. Estes to persuade him. It worked. That is the only 1st gen Camaro Z28 convertible ever made and it now belongs to Dana Mecum of Mecum Auto Auctions. The rarest muscle car ever built.
I hope the old owner watches and pops into the comments spewing more of his bs. He seems like the type.
That would make my day!
I'm not going to hold my breath that the guy will
Wouldn't surprise me if he has a mullet down to his back 🤣😆
If he has any sense he won't. Unless he enjoys getting roasted by thousands of strangers on the internet! Shame on him!
Hey Mortske,
My sincere condolences! I’ve got that same sinking feeling I used to get when I was younger and would discover I’d gotten beat on buying a car, and I’ve only watched your inspection so far.
I can see why you’re offering it for less than half of what you paid for it.
I’m hoping that things improve as I watch the rest, but I’m expecting the worst.
Sorry my friend!
Peace,
DrRick
I learn more from your channel on how to trouble shoot and repair what you got. And turn a sow's ear into a silk purse. Mortske you ROCK, Another great video from the Master Mechanic Mortske
I'm not a fan of purses.
Oh wow, this one looks worse from below than a 65 year old barn find with the barn situated snugly underwater next to the Titanic. It really hurts the eyes, could be the rust trying to escape and jumping off.😂😂😂😂😂 Stevie Wonder would have left it where it was.
I bet most other channels would have hid it from their subscribers, you didn’t really, really appreciate that👍🏼👍🏼Honestly, this usually only happens to me. 😂Thank you! You really made my day!
😂😂😂
We show it how it is!
Glad for the content mortske!! Got covid yesterday and now am at home with soup and some Mortske Monday! Thanks again!!
get well soon!
I swapped out a 2.3 Turbo that came out of a wrecked Thunderbird into a 1993 Ranger and fought the fuel system for a couple of weeks because the injectors were all stuck shut with crappy fuel. Cleaned the injectors and it ran like a top.
Awesome!
You should look down here in Missouri, I see them all the time for 500 on up in better shaoe than that one.
Here in Washington too.
@@JeffKopis send em my way!
@@MortskeRepair You pay the shipping, plus whatever I paid for em. The nearby town of Neah Bay (a Reservation, natch) has half a dozen moldering away in yards. But not necessarily IROCs, Z28s, and Trans Ams. I think the shipping cost from the NW tip of Washington to ND would make em too expensive for ya
Hook a 9volt battery to the injector to open it and spray brake clean through the injector to clean it. Works amazing
Hey Mortske! I finally saw DD speed shops episode on the Bricklin last night. I choked on my coffee when I saw the stickers you slapped on it! Classic!!!🤣🤣🤣

great how you have a sense of humor., dry as it is i love it.i lived my life doing repairs on cars. i'm in my 70's and fair to say i can think out a problem more than i can address. just don't have it in me anymore. Ah to be 50 again.
dry?!? what?!? haha
love third gens, i have my fair share of them. right now i have an 85 iroc and 82 z28. i have also had 2 92 25th anniversary editions RS ones as well. just love these cars. keep up the good work
Is your 82 crossfire injection they used on them in 82. Nice collection of cars I miss all of my z28s. I had an 85 iroc 88 iroc 85 z28 5 speed all tTop cars man I loved them cars
@@icantsaywhatI heard 82's had a fiberglass hoods too?
@@grabasandwichI've seen an'82 with the fiberglass hood from the factory. Not sure if all of them were like that.
I have an '87 iroc 305 t-tops car. I'm dropping in a high-comp L46 from a '70 Z28 when I get the courage to tear apart a numbers matching iroc😑
@@Whats-It-To-Ya numbers don't mean sh¡t dude. We only live once. Everything's mass produced and it's just the rich people driving up the prices beyond our reach with their p¡ssing matches.
I know in the 80's GM used the oil pressure sending unit to shut off the fuel pump if it did not have oil pressure. or if the sending unit was bad.
This is a fact that brings back memories 😅
17:17 tune ports aint so bad. I used to think and do the same thing. They suck, rip it out and drop in some with a carb. That was until i got my formula! It wouldnt idle and ran like shit. I replaced the fuel pump, the filter and the fuel pressure regulator. Replaced the injectors with factory spec brand new ones and it runs AWESOME! thing is loyal asf! SBCs are loyal anyway but that tpi is better than any carb or TBI unit. I wanted to do the same as you and put an LS in it but it runs so damn good im gonna keep it. I want to do a "what if" Callaway made a run of sledgehammer firebirds! Lol i guess what im saying is give it a chance!
I have been watching these videos for years and love them!! First time he ever smiled on camera!!!! Hugs from Dunbridge Ohio and The Dunbridge Truckstop
I fixed a tune port corvette that had 1 bad injector, internally shorted and shut the whole bank down. Minimum of 10 ohm resistance.
About 10 years ago I bought a rust free 86 Camaro RS with the 5.3. It was loaded with ac automatic power windows and seats. Everything worked even had new tires on the same rims you have on yours. I only paid $750 for it. Even all the suspension and brakes were almost new. Car drove beautifully. I drove it for 3 years only problem was I had to replace the fuel pump and I did it the correct way by undoing the rear muffler and dropping the rear axle some it was a pain but got it done. I turned around and sold the car for $3000 . I live in Florida so the car was immaculate underneath. It was red with tee tops and ground effects. Wish I had kept it now after watching this video. Sorry you got screwed so bad. Good luck in whatever you decide to do with it.
I would love to see a 1986 RS since it didn't exist. In 1986 You had the Sport Coupe or the Z28. In 1987 Chevrolet tested the market with a limited edition RS model all with the 2.8L V6 available in red, black or white.
A 5.3? I never heard of that one.
At least you've got it listed for a fair price. She needs some work, man the rust, the RUST... but you know what you performed a miracle with that expedition and got her going.. nice work Mortske.. It shows that anything is possible if you try hard enough.
Thank you!
There's just something so nostalgic about a square body camaro
From now on I'm calling those ugly things "Square Body Camaros" I learned drifting in a brand new 82 "Square Body Caprice." (Sorry, Dad)
@@That70sChannelI don't know if I'd call them ugly, they looked like Farrah Fawcett compared to the Foxbody Mustang. They were basically a rear wheel drive Escort and they were ugly ten ways until Sunday. I had an '87 iroc with T-tops in high school and the chicks loved it. Ironically the prom king had a Foxbody but guess who drove the prom queen to our senior prom? Yup. I'm telling ya man, the third Gen Camaros and Trans Ams were chick magnets.
Agree. I was in high school from about 79 to 83 and there was nothing during that time or after that I would have wanted to have if you gave it to me
@2JZEngineNoShit I will say though that the suspension setup on that third gen is way better than the previous. They handled a lot better. I had a crush on a girl who drove one. She had a crush on my younger brother and she ended up marrying my younger brother's friend. Who decided after he had seven kids with her that he's gay.
OMG please never repeat the term "square body Camaro" again! I can see the jean jackets and mullets now!
Actually in the 80’s my best friends dad got one of these Camaros in Utah. With the 5.7 and a 5 speed with the limited slip. Then he brought it to Northern Cal. Where we lived. When he took the Lamborghini Espada (not big $$ , but still a V12 ) we would take the Camaro on weekends to cruise in. And versa visa when he took the Camaro. We got tacos…. 😂😂
Thanks for sharing!
I restored a 1985 Camaro SC back in High School/Trade School and have been on a bit of a kick to get a 3rd gen again. Hearing the Paul Harvey skit hit me right in the feeeeelz. Took me right back to 2001 eating lunch while sitting in the in progress SC in the parking lot of the community college after getting out of HS for the morning with paul on the radio as we had few stations to choose from 😅 good memories!
Good times
Dang Mortske, I cannot remember when I laughed this much on one of your videos. The one of Stuey asking about the hotdog down the hall really got me. And, and the Mortske minute too? Awww say it ain’t so? Bonus. Only thing missing is a few chicken chasers, and you’d have a trifecta!!
Loved the problem solving on this one. Thanks for not giving up!
You're welcome!
I love these old 3rd gen f-bodys. I daily an 88 iroc with the 305 and its been a reliable ol girl. Looks like a good project car.
Those cars are actually a lot better than we think if you know how to work on them they're actually pretty good. The problem with those cars is everybody tries to chop them up and think they have a way of fixing fixing it with a hacksaw and it just ruins them. They're actually really good cars if you know how to work on them
Dude that dash pad looks mint! That alone is worth 2-300 bucks. Can’t win them all but it really doesn’t look too bad. It’s hard to drive home with nothing after going through the effort to make the trip. I know I’m guilty of it…
Had the same car in 89. All show no go. The more beers you drink the more fun to drive these cars were. (Professionally driven in a closed environment protective gear and a babysitter of course !!
of course!
Your level of not giving up is awe inspiring... I would have chucked that wrench across the shop taking that fuel line off the front. At least twice...
Thank you! WE cut that part out!
I grew up hearing Paul Harvey storys in my dads work truck on AM radio. He had that commanding, yet soothing voice that is missing in radio today.
He really was a great voice!
yeah, I think the only way I would even turn a wrench on that one is if I was taking it completely apart to salvage anything worth keeping.
I guess the rear limited slip axle assembly would be worth something. T5 are a dime a dozen and the engine is about a 150-200 core. Since I’ve been a technician for years I would probably snatch the drivetrain and do a decent refresh on the engine and make sure the transmission and rear diff are good and get what I could for them and scrap the rest. I’ve been there and sometimes you just have to take the loss or become a scumbag and try to screw someone else. I sleep better just taking the loss and moving on.
Crank position sensor? It's what tells the computer where the engine is in order to fire the correct injector at the right time(when the intake valve is open). Never heard of a cold start injector, a Ford would just have longer injector pulses until the engine is warm enough to go into closed loop mode where the pulse length is adjusted to get the correct voltage from the O2 sensor.
I really enjoyed the mortske minute doing the VIN on the vehicle you're working on😊
glad you enjoyed it!
The big round guy is the egr valve. Also, the throttle body is liquid warmed, not liquid cooled! I can't believe the hacks cut a hole in the body for pump/sending unit access.
I know you have to keep going for the video but I would have gave up way before tearing the intake off. Burnouts make everything better though!
Years ago I worked on a 1995 GMC 1500 that needed a new fuel pump. When I finished ripping the rotted straps and got the tank down I was greeted with half a tub of hardened plumbers putty spackled around the sender. Videoed all that away and found the lock ring just sitting inside the putty not even in place and locked in. When I got the sender assembly out the o-ring seal that seals the sender to the tank was just hanging out in the bottom of the fuel tank.....🤦♂️ the owner had told me that the truck used a lot of coolant. When I went looking for a coolant leak I found that whoever had last replaced the thermostat and bolted the housing down with the little half oval metal plate that goes on top in between the housing and the intake manifold which left an 1/8" gap on one side that just leaked coolant like a sivv.... after all that it still ran rough. So I tracked down and fixed 463,000 vacuum leaks lol
Nice thirdgen, she's got potential and a IROC louvered hood thou😃 dropping a tank is partially dropping the axle and most cut the floor and they make a trapdoor for that. Bonus with the posi-traction rear and nice interior, dash and wheel look sharp too! Nice job with the TPI, early models have the coldstart injector. Can't wait to see part 2!
No part 2 from me!
My 85 I was told it was bad fuel pump it turned out to be fuse on firewall
Good thing about those third gen’s, you can grab a diff from a 4th gen. And it bolts right up. So you’ll get disc brakes in the rear and you can get 4th gen 10 bolts dirt cheap
Good to know!
The Camaro Game Giveth and the Camaro Game Taketh, I'm excited to see what marketplace mullet machines will be found next unless they're all literal rustbuckets.
Cris Craft is a friggin genius. Man that was alot of work. Great video Mortske.

@MortskeRepair I appreciate you and Chin and Mojo keep up the good work I been watching for years and you help alot of people out with your videos and Wes too man that guy is great also. I can not afford college, but these TH-cam videos make me feel smart.lol
I had an 81 Vette that had a rod knocking, Found 86 87 Vette TPIS cheap, Had the 350 rebuilt and cam with Vortech Supercharger and Headers. Wow What a wake up. Oh and a 700R4 tranny with 3.36 gear, It would fry the tired in low and then slip the band on the 1 2 shift, you could smell Clutch every WOT 1-2 shift. I loved that old 81. And 27 MPG Highway, I drove it from Virginia to Illinois and back great cruise. I think That old Camaro could easily be a great driver. You find em, fix em and let some one else finish it up. Great video Dennis

Feel your pain. Bought a car off of sleezebay out of another state. Didn't know before hand that unless you purchase such an item in a very specific way you are on your own. They posted pics from when they originally purchased the car on the same site two salvaged titles and 10y earlier.

Did you see pudding had get daddy to start a tractor 🚜 how shameful ❤😂🎉😮😅😊 his wife shouldn't let out on his own hay.

Seemed a shame to waste that good wrench, nice solution on the injector, breathing some ford through that chevy! Loved the joy you seemed to have on this one, rock on and happy wrenching!
Thanks 👍
I can’t believe there wasn’t an “accidental” engine fire. Appreciate your patience and troubleshooting!
No thermal incidents!
That was likely a police car. I worked at a Chevy dealership in the 80"s and saw a few Camaro police cars. Always 5.7 TPI, stripe delete Z28, black wall tires 145 mph speedo but not an IROC. Extremely rare options.
interesting!
Or... it was just a regular old Z28... because that's exactly what it is. Not all cars sold in 86 and 87 were Irocs and they weren't anything exclusive to law enforcement lol
That was a real struggle, but you won out in the end and took Duff for a ride!
Don’t forget the fuse behind the passenger headlight that is for your fuel pump on that car
Well done Mortske. 😊

I commend you Mortske. It's way easier to work on really old junk then half old junk. Trying to work on new junk is impossible!!! Keep it up brother
Yeah, we'll get learned up on this generation one day!
I love my TPI powered GMC, Great engines. LS swaps are for people that can't make power any other way.
I ls swapped mine with a carburetor and got the adaptor kit for a turbo 350. Couldn’t be easier and definitely worth it
When i worked at a gm dealership as tech, we would have older guys having their midlife crisis come in and buy a firebird, Camaro or trans am then come back and complain about the ride quality. we'd tell them its a performance car with the fe3 suspension so of course its not going to ride like a Cadillac.
Use the old locking pliers on one of the shocks for the deck lid. Better than the prop rod.
Love the channel. Appreciate you brother.
Yeah! Those Camaros ride really light in the back....very easy to smoke the tires. My brother had an 89 RS and it was FUN! Mullet machine!!! 😁 Thanks for sharing, Mort! Good job!

i was super pumped for this build and man.... did it through the book at you.... every part rusted or installed incorrectly

Ah, fire with Mortske, like old times
Such a crappy fuel system. I'd rather have a carb or TBI.
That guy that sold it to you is extremely special.
Live and learn from mistakes at this point I would be a genius with the mistakes that I have made. Best wishes for you Morske. Duff is a good boy. I love how excited he gets and wags his tail
"jeez, that's a lot of fuel pressure at the injector, no wonder it blew the seal, usually only happens when the return is blocked"
"aahh, now i see..."
keep up the good work young man
That's how we learn! Trial by fire!
1:36:26 awesome work Mortske! Love the smile!
My old one was doing the exact same thing ended up being something with security I pulled ignition switch out of the column and moved it manually with the bar that was attached inside the column and it ran perfectly
Had to do the same on my brother's trans am, been sitting for 10yrs with a bad pump, then injectors were bad, orielys wanted 100+ for each, got a set a 4.6 mustang injectors for $50 off marketplace, then she fired right up. Rings were stuck, threw some trans fluid in the oil and ran it a few days to free up the rings, it was good to go.
awesome!
Damn. Well you'll have that
If there was one TH-camr I wanted to spend a day with learning to fix cars with would be would be Mortske. By invitation only of course. 9:49 9:50 9:51
Oh man, I was expecting the fuel rail to be absolutely disgusting after seeing the inside of that tank. Seeing you get the injector out and seeing it caked must've been awesome. I think you can flush an injector with a 9V battery or using a bench power supply and use something strong to flush it. Nice troubleshooting work on this one!!
Oh, I bet the last guy who tried to get this running started the fire when fuel was pissing all over the ground and the lines were probably nasty with rust which accounts for where the fire was from. I bet they finally said f*** this, not my problem anymore.
That smile when you got it running, priceless.
Oh, you said why didn't you think to check the power steering? your PS lines are pissing all over the place :)
You need to do a "MOJO Minute" one day. Tell us the back story on how you got to know MOJO, and how and why he works with you. Had a couple sellers turn it into a bidding war.
I always reply the same, I was willing to pay your asking price,
I won't be part of a bidding war and refuse to deal with someone who
would turn it into that.
Had one guy get back to me and honor the original price and said I was the first

Beautiful mushroom cloud when you put that tire sealer in a fire
The take off rocket rod must be connect to the housing of the rear differential. The rocket rod is made the car so rocket rod is between the rear end all metal pumpkin and no independent suspension for the tubing live axles and bearings. Again the rod at front is connect to the cross member that is there under transmission included mount of the transmission. That is where the rubber mount is above the cross member.
You know you hear the old we ain't got it you don't need it a bit of every where at times but back in the 90s there was a place in Amelia Ohio called vandemark auto parts they had a radio commercial played into like a phone call with a guy looking for a blower motor for a 70 something Chevy dudes like hollldddd onnn then it clicks back he's like what color is it customer says what????? Again lol hollldddd onnn then dudes like we ain't got it and guys like I really need it dudes like see you don't need it lol then they said something about themselves I heard that thousands of times about 25 yrs ago just thought I'd share that since you brought up the memories thank you sir for another entertaining Monday
We should call this thing the Prop 65 Camaro, I think we're all sick from this whole deal.
no, don't give them any credit!
The v6 was a 2.8 v6 the 3.8 didn't come till 98 and in 2000 you got the y87 package with was 230hp 325 ftlb and had traction control and dual exhaust and limited slip
Ive never used the fast forward feature so much in my life!!! 😂
😢
yeah, what they said@@oldpolak5203
In love with the fuel tank
Paul Frickin’ Harvey!
The problem with putting the 350 behind the 5-speed wasn't the transmission holding together, but the frame flexing with the shifting of a manual transmission. A problem that could be corrected with subframe connectors. I suspect the problem wasn't as big a deal with non-T-top cars. I bought my 1987 GTA to get a car with the TPI engine. The TPI engine comes with a cold start fuel injector that sprays in extra fuel, but it often fails and is no longer available. Corvette TPI motors have the same problem. I haven't done it yet, but there is a way to upgrade the software to eliminate the cold start injector. While it is not a Hellcat motor ... it is fast enough to get you into trouble! 🙂
This we’ll be a nice car when your done with it keep up the good work and videos

Not a big fan of that style of Camaro, but hey she don’t sound to bad! With a little elbow grease & time could be a nice rig! Looks like it’s Duff approved so it can’t be too bad! Hey, thanks for the ride and the Burn Out!
Thanks 👍

A former boss of mine had a convertible Z-28 that I did oil changes on. Made sure I spanked that pedal when I 'checked my work'.
