It's because they ditch the efi, and added a poorly tuned carb. The efi on these was actually pretty good, and can be built on cheaply & easily. Old guys just can't seem to understand that carb's have their limits.
@@geoffw86 it's both. Even if they had a better camshaft, efi produces higher power output with lesser fuel used. Dial in your efi, and you will make more power with no other changes. My 1968 F100 was running perfect when I converted to a TBI setup back in 2003. It made more power & made a big improvement in mpg. 6 mpg to 15 mpg. Yeah mpg sucked on those old big blocks. It's time for an engine rebuild, and I will be converting to a mpfi sequential fire. Just to see if I can improve upon it.
@williamallen7836 hi, well tuned efi definitely will help with fuel mileage. On the dyno, at full throttle, a well tuned carb or efi makes not much difference in terms of peak power. Love efi myself so don't take me wrong. 112 LSA leaves so much potential power on the table that it makes me wonder what criteria was used in specifying the cam. BTW, not an expert, enthusiastic amateur here 😊
@@geoffw86 But that's ware people get mislead. Unless you plan on trailering the car & just driving the car at the drag strip, you are not going to be spending much time at WOT at high RPMs all that often. Down in the normal ranges of average driving, and even spirited or aggressive driving, efi will perform much better. LSA is but one aspect of camshaft. All of which can be equally important, and involve a given & take to achieve an end goal. Unfortunately they did not cover their reasoning for going with that camshaft. Their choice of wanting to run a 150 shot of nitrous may have played into it.
I had an almost new '86 Iroc, it's tpi 305 was rated at 215 hp. The crappy heads wouldn't let the engine rev above 5,000 rpms. The tranny shift point was 5500. Back in the 70’s my family had a used Corvette-only car lot. My dad would spend 30 minutes on one spot getting the paint looking as good as possible, then as he walked away say okay now make the rest of the car look that good. Wet sanding (when neccessary) and buffing old paint takes quite a bit of practice but it's so worth it.. I always used drill buffing attachments for smaller areas that you cant use a full size buffer, but sometimes you have to do it by hand depending on space available and with non painted trim getting in the way . I've saved a few classics from having to get completely repainted.. even older single stage paint jobs can be brought back to life and have an awesome shine when someone knows how to buff properly! I used to do a whole car for about 150 to 200 dollars.. add another 100 if it was black or a dark tri stage color, because then you need to do a 3 stage buffing process with swirl remover polishing compound. When done right itll have a mirror finish, but when done wrong itll look like a 3D hologram of all the inconsistencies in your sanding scratches.. those with experience know exactly what I'm talking about!
If you're setting a max budget you gotta trim somewhere...covers are expensive...but they probably could have picked up a pair of 5th gen seats for less than 500 that would be a better look than those racing buckets.

You're thinking of a different car . The Camaro doesn't have them

Get lost Kid.
My red and white t-top IROC Z 28, had a 350 in it and hauled ass, pretty sure it was a 86 . Without a doubt the best body style and interior.
Loved this car!!! A guy in high school got one brand new in canary yellow with limo tint! Yes he was the coolest dude in school. And then a girl got a white Monte Carlo SS and another guy got a 300 Z! I was a jealous young man!!! lolol
When all you can do is ride off into the sunset in that moldy yellow skool bus..lol Those dang rich parent kids..
I have always loved the soft yellow on 3rd gens.
Someone at GM must have agreed with you, when the IROC was rolled out all the first year press cars I saw were this color. It looks great-- and I'm a Foxbody guy!
Damn! Had an 87” same IROC. Awesome handling car for the era.
1987 Trans Am with the Vette 350 FI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
dude, they handled terrible! infamous poor handling.
Same ‘87 but 350tpi 🎉
Gotta love the G&R instrument only background music. Very fit for this build, lol.
Good call! I noticed this also! "Paradise City" I believe. I had a gf who loved GNR and I loved her so I heard this CONSTANTLY back then, lol
Good call!
Its just a LITTLE bit off tho...instumental and slightly out of tune w/different solo's. 😂 Sounded great tho.
So that's what it was - had a familiar feeling :D Just a little bit off to avoid copyright issues :D :D
I had an 87 IROC TTOP car.. Red with the gold package.. Very beautiful and harder to find now.. Jasper 350 5.7 man I miss it
Tuff stuff and a scrub brush work like magic. Ive washed out 20 year old Pepsi stains.
its not that good.
Thanks guys!! Watching this took me back in the days when I bought my very first T-Tops Z28!!
I had the '87 with a 350 in it. I miss that car and my hair.
🤣 and my hair 🤣
Lol
What I love about this? Notice the music in the background... Ac/Dc, GnR, etc. Back to the 80s! 😎
They wanted parricide city so bad at the end lol
@@LYC_44 Yeah! 😅
When I was a kid this was one of my favorite cars
yea that stock exhaust is killing the power numbers for sure . we have a 92 25th anniversary were working on that we put a 355 in with wp sportsman 2 heads ( cant remember the cam but its choppy.) 650 carb and a really nice set of ceramic coated long tube headers backed by the stock t5 with a mccloud clutch disc ... can promise you guys this thing was laying rubber into 3rd and it wouldnt let up
yeah, but this is budget build. I think they are trying to stay in $10,000 with everything the cost of car and all the work. with a new exhaust they sure would been over
@funtyes1970 and I totally get that. Could still budget the exhaust though. Stainless shorty headers aren't very expensive anymore
@@muddymikey3If the piss-poor quality didn't clue you in, this is ancient & being posted for ad money.
Camshaft, aluminum heads, and NOS. To not break 300 at the wheels is kinda anemic with what was spent. Imo
It's because they ditch the efi, and added a poorly tuned carb. The efi on these was actually pretty good, and can be built on cheaply & easily. Old guys just can't seem to understand that carb's have their limits.
Its not the carb limiting power, it's the cam. LSA of 112º is way off
@@geoffw86 it's both.
That car ws a real pos, warranty claims totaled over 5K in 1988-89. The car was stolen and trashed, my ins paid me twice what I paid for it.
Thank you, guys.
I had a Black 1986 IROC with a 5 speed- Flowmaster exhaust, stage 2 computer chip & K&N air filter. Loved it!
Powernation 2, I' m really glad I found your show on TH-cam...I use to watch Powernation every Sunday. There was 4 half hour shows and that was the only shows that I made sure to watch every week.
Oh man… You had me hooked right up until the part where I found out you were adding nitrous. God I wish it wasn't nitrous equipped.
It's not your car.
@@ekscalybur And that somehow shields it from justified criticism? Nitrous is an absolute dogshit mod for any car.
@@centralscrutinizer6108 Who said it was shielded from criticism? OP went beyond criticizing it to saying someone shouldn't do whatever the hell they want to their own car. There would be no issue if he stopped at "...had me hooked right up until the part where I found out you were adding nitrous."
As for it being dogshit, over a century of use really puts a dent in that argument. But that just shows you're just like the OP, if YOU don't like it, no one else is supposed to either.

3rd Gen camaros... one of my TOP TWO favorite cars of all time!!!
I owned a red 89 with the larger diameter wheels. It was loaded with every option, including the 5.7. I sold it in 2000 and still miss it!
Third-gen F-body = 😊
Sure, they might be a bit rattly, but look good and are fun to drive. Not to mention great aftermarket support and loads of nostalgia. There were a zillion of these on the road when I was a whipper-snapper.
They weren't the best built cars, were they? We had an 86 when it was new. Between the Mustang and Camaro of the day, the Mustang was a better built car. It just wasn't a great looking car, and would get smoked by a 5.7 Camaro.
Back in the 70’s my family had a used Corvette-only car lot. My dad would spend 30 minutes on one spot getting the paint looking as good as possible, then as he walked away say okay now make the rest of the car look that good. This was before the base coat clear coat system and all the new paint cleaning and polishing technologies that we have today. I was 13 at the time and wet sanding and buffing a car was the last thing I wanted to be doing, I had kid stuff to do.
Dude said there they would get 100 horsepower out of the bottle and only got 30. They gave up pretty quick and like others have mentioned the stock exhaust is killing it.
They de tuned that thing massively. Should be closer to 400NA. Others have pointed out that they are probably trying to protect the trans and rear end.
Yes They DEFINITELY AREN'T Tuning The Whole Package Enough .
Also ...
YES ...
They
DEFINITELY
NEED To REPLACE THE ENTIRE Exhaust System From The Heads Of The Engine And ALL The Way Back ...
With A FULL Flowmater Or Walker ,
Or Other COMPLETE Exhaust System .
INCLUDING The

ALSO ...
DEFINITELY
NEED
TO PUT
4 : 30 OR
4 : 56 Gears in the rear end Too !
Awesome car. Love that you guys did a budget build for most of us out there with limited resources👍🤟
LOL, I remember when the IROKs were released, I used to eat their lunch in my '68 Olds Cutlass!
I did the same with my '85 Fox.
I eat their lunch in my 4th Gen LS1 but still love third gen.
You weren't getting past my 89 that I bought new off the showroom floor. It didn't take much to get them to run. Never, ever had any problems with a fox, and I went against some nasty ones. 3rd gen was one of the most underrated cars of the 80's. Best looking too. (Although I did have a soft spot for the GN.)
Yeah, but nothing but a Vette could stay with them on the twisties. I had a half-dozen BMW's try to stay with my '87 on a cloverleaf, and five of them slid off the road or did a 180 behind me. LOL!
@@nephetula Absolutely! I honestly think that was some of it's downfall. They made it too Vette like and not enough pony car. That's what drove a lot of people to the Fox Mustang. In 2010 I think they understood that and made the 5th/6th gen blvd pony cars for sure. (That just happened to keep up wtih Vettes too. LOL)
I like the way you greased that shaft before insertion
Every inch of it 😂
You stripped the HELL out of that shock! 38:34

How to get the most power out of a 305. Step one. Pull 305 and throw in garbage. Step 2. Buy 350.
I'm in love with this Z28 Camero !
A screw jack on the pan to hold the transmission up. You can see it push in. I guess in the long run you'll need one less quart of fluid so that's a money saver.

350ci, 195cc aluminum heads, .550 lift cam, 225whp? Ouch… I was thinking at least 350whp through that anemic exhaust and auto trans.
I would be less than impressed after all that work.
Back then guys still used Clayton water brake dynos. They read real low
My first 350 for my EC only read 240s peak hp but could run 13s. THey were more for tuning
These guys are doing the Lord's work.
I had a 1986 Z28 with the 5 speed manual transmission and I sure thought it was fast back then. It was fun to drive. You could smoke the tires off and slide it's ass around whenever you wanted. 5th gear always broke in those trannies though. I had mine replaced once.
Canary yellow! I know they have to make commercials for summit racing and others, but I was not impressed with the front seats.... they looked like 160 dollar seats..... I graduated hs in 82, and I think these camaros are the perfect platform to use to make a hot rod with.... modern enough to be able to retrofit alot of go fast/suspension parts etc without breaking the bank...
@@majortolleson7976 I always loved the look of that tunes port injection. I wanted to get an engine from one of these cars and put it in my Chevy Colorado or my S10 Extreme. Good enough power and a really cool looking induction system. I had the Z28 and also had a Berlinetta with the 350ci engine.

Fun videos for an old gear head like me to watch. Always amazed you guys can pull and engine and do a rebuild and dyno within an hour. Takes me much longer lol.

1986 Chevrolet Camaro Iroc-Z
One of my favorite builds!
It would’ve been cooler to keep the tuned port injection set up
WITH minimal effort and a few specific upgrades the TPI system can easily make 450 Hp…
Your guy up top stripped out those brand new shocks @38:34. lol
Is it possible to keep the TPI setup and get more power of you your small block 350?
yeah, easy.
If you got deep enough posckets. Carb is the way to go if you want good power upstairs though. Done a million tpi builds
@@gordocarboif we match item for item here in the vid…..the. The money spent on HEI distributor and carb and intake manifolds would be evenly spent on correctly upgrading the TPI with better runners, correct porting of the TPI system and headers and a reprogrammed PROM CHIP.
My TPI system makes 450hp and 400 ft/lbs torque engine Dyno and 375HP at the rear wheels all Still with out Nitro…the weak link is now the transmission. The real reason why we don’t max out HP on a budget build
I had two of these at the same time (both 305's) I was going to use one for parts, and build the other. A guy with a 1993 black cobra #666 of 4993 wanted both Iroc's, so I gave him $8k and the camaros for the cobra. Thanks for explaining this. Hopefully they get it corrected
where is caprice?((
Back then only old people drove them
Wet sanding (when neccessary) and buffing old paint takes quite a bit of practice but it's so worth it.. When done right itll have a mirror finish, but when done wrong itll look like a 3D hologram of all the inconsistencies in your sanding scratches.. those with experience know exactly what I'm talking about!
don't like those seats.. should of stuck with Original
If you're setting a max budget you gotta trim somewhere...covers are expensive...but they probably could have picked up a pair of 5th gen seats for less than 500 that would be a better look than those racing buckets.
Agree
Usually only $50 a seat at a junkyard. I definitely would have went OEM also but from a newer gen
Rear shocks on a 1988 convertible Camaro is a pain in the ass!
I had that exact same 86 IROC Camaro. It was fun to drive. I drove it to my job daily. It was a blast to drive. I wanted to put a powerful motor in it. But I decided to sale it. Big mistake. I now wish I had that car right now. I have a 350 engine that came in a 1978 Camaro I purchased. I found out, the front end came from a rear ended damaged Camaro. It has some good power.
20 yrs ago I bought same car in high school but black. First thing was pull out the 305 sold the block and burnt that tpi. Swapped for a 350 4 bolt i built for a year and got a sweet deal on a 400 trans with 410 in the rear. My license was revoked a few years later. Those were some good times.
I've put countless government employee's children through college to retain my driver's license.
A third gen in that clean condition isn't such a deal anymore. The price of all 4th gen and earlier F-bodys has gone insane.
That Camaro is beautiful, really? The best of its class. I don't see none on the road these days. #Camaro #ClassicCar #BeautyOnWheels 🚗💨

A gf of mine had a 1986 brand new black and gold IROC, it was a very cool looking car
Incredible how easy that engine is to work on compared to the new stuff.
I was a kid when this car was new. A friend put a Lingenfelter engine in his and the WHOLE car started to twist due to the lack of a solid structure. It got so bad he could not open and close the drivers door.
Back in 1991 I bought a black 1986 IROC-Z with grey interior and stripes when I was 20. Had a blast with it but hated losing to mustang gts lol. I wish I was mechanically incline to add some power and torque to that 305 TPI.
Took my senior pictures with my 1990 teal green iroc z. Traded that car for a 1991 Shelby turbo Daytona. Wish I still had both those cars.
My cousin had an 1987...it was hard to shift and had a stiff clutch. Definitley race material and it had the famous body 'torque' cracks above the door pillars at the roof.
Shocked this show is still around
I love how all the songs are completely out of tune yet instantly recognizable
Gorgeous Iconic car. IMHO, doesn't even need to be all that fast! (Did I just say that??)
