- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 19 พ.ย. 2023
- I recently picked this 1971 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser station wagon up as part of a package deal from another car guy. Story is it came from New Mexico and had a 1968 455 Rocket Engine in it and was parked many years ago. After seeing that the engine bay is incomplete lets see if we can get the big block to breathe fire once again. This car has been SOLD!! As always, thanks for watching!

I don't understand.....still....if you don't like the video, why watch?
Happy thanksgiving turkey
Thank you Master Mortske😜
@@MortskeRepairI recently bought a 1999 Chevy 28ft p30 ex Frito lay van runs great I put fresh fuel and filter like I say it runs amazing I was noticing the oil pressure go from 60psi to 30psi shut 51:02 51:08 the engine off and 90% of my oil was in side the radiator my local parts house said my cooler had to have busted inside the radiator ive seen trans fluid cooler do this exact same thing changed the radiator in the C10 works great now have you ever heard of the oil cooler busting and fill my radiator with oil
People might think I’m weird, but I love station wagons. If I ever have the money to restore a classic car it would probably be a station wagon. This video made my day.
I asked Mortske about wagons a bit back. It is good to see one here.
Not weird at all. Many thousands of car guys love wagons. They also made popular drag cars in Stock Eliminator.
At one point you couldn't give them away! If you're curious about the wagon in my profile picture, there's a playlist on channel.
@@mattbrown5511 that's all we grew up in 50 to. 80 ranch imALA. Malibu. Country squires had about ten of em in that era. Luved sitting in 3rd and making faces at drivers going down the. Shore
The vista cruiser was the cutlass . The scenic cruiser was the big wagon
The Vista Cruiser was the coolest wagon ever. I had one years ago. Mild built 455, 400 trans/shift kit with 3:73 limited slip rear. I wish I still had it 👍🇺🇸
I love how you, puddin, and dd's speed shop are friends and tease one another. Thanks for the great content!
What THAT HACK, DD SPEED SHOP, LMAO.
His Tri 5 builds are pretty Impressive although he's not good with DENTS, LOL.
Lmao, IMHO, everyone has there strong and weak points. My weak points lately are trying to run a small detail shop of my own. And work a second job and spend time with my son and wife and still watch all you great TH-cam guys lol. Keep up the content love it all and thank you.
No. I don't think so
DD is friends with everybody. Uncle Tony, Dave Newbern, and many others. It's the Canadian way. They're impossibly nice. Must be the Tim Hortons donuts. Or the Molsons.
My grandpa would be proud. I’d like to have one but with headers and flexy house.
Hey Josh 👋
Josh watches Mortske? Who knew?? I bet you also watch DD, Puddin and Vice Grip huh. That's awesome!!!
and cragars!
I can't believe so many people passed up working on this awesome car! Solid body muscle wagons are hard to find... Back in the day, they were the first cars to have the big blocks taken out to be used in another Oldsmobile! Love the 68-72 Vista Cruisers!!! I need to find a 69 to match my Cutlass.
Couldn't agree more!
I love the old Vista Cruiser. You need to get this baby all nice again. Especially since your a 70s show guy. Good job as always brother.
Mr. Mortske, watching you and your friend un-pack that door, it looked like two (2) Bears Humpin' basketballs. Who, Hah!, keep the videos comin'!
I agree
I like the way you bash Puddin, and DDs Speedshop, but knowing they are really your friends! I would really like to see you,Puddin, and Dan do a build all togather, but don't worry you don't have to power wash it! Love your videos!
I worked the parts counter of an Olds and IH Dealership in the 70s. These were pretty classy Wagons in the day. I knew of a couple of guys that had to give up their cool Muscle Cars when they had a few kids and this was a fairly cool looking option for them. I think you could order them with a 455 in 72 but most had 350s.
My dads budyy had a 455 wagon, made many road trips from LA to the sierras to go backpacking in it.
HS kids would be embarrassed to be driving one of these....but made for great party/beach mobiles...pile in partys on.
Never in my lifetime for any reason would I ever had thought I’d see you installing new carpet into anything. This is a definite milestone for this channel. I’m overwhelmed with joy and enthusiasm. Proud of you sir. 💯💯 💯
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@MortskeRepair absolutely.
When my ol' lady (ex) wanted a new carpet, I told her to grow it herself 🤣
My dad had a delta 88 with a 455 and a two barrel carburetor. We took it to Spain as he was in the Air Force and it ran on regular gas. Definitely a rocket ship. Dad raced all the Porsches and other European sports cars even when pulling a camping trailer. Great to see this video brings back super memories
Hanging out, down the street, the same old thing we did last week, hello Wisconsin!
How cool is it to binge watch Motske AND Puddin
the coolest!
Damn, Mojo may not be keen on being on camera, but every time he is, his quips always get me rolling 🤣
"Why don't you like unit points..?" "Because they're miserable" 🤣🤣
Ordered two cozies and my wife bootlegged one and stuck it on the fridge for drinks/making dinner. Thanks man. Cheers.
good thing you got two!
That kept me on the edge of my chair though out the whole episode . At first I thought it was not going to even start , but I know that you can start just about anything , and you proved that with a cough and a backfire . The initial run down was not promising but some new parts solved the problems . the burnouts at the end of the video were great , especially the light show from the carb , no extra illumination needed Thanks for the monolog your wit is still sharp like a pointy stick . God Bless you all , Duff Dog too , Till next time . Stuart in Ontario ..
Much appreciated Stuart
nice to see u scan comments, defiantly a tgif type day when video is dropped@@MortskeRepair
Vista is Spanish for "view". So, with all those windows, you always had a great view while you were cruising maybe? We had a 72 Plymouth station wagon when I was growing up. What a dog of a car. Always was breaking down. Dad was always working on it. My mom once asked our mechanic if he minded that my dad worked on the car. He said no because it meant he would be getting it soon to work on. True story.
Bahaha
Dodge and AMC had the worst rep back then remember it well.
The Vista Cruiser was the Cutlass-body station wagon, the Custom Cruiser was the Delta 88-body station wagon. Custom Cruisers had all the electric options with a vanishing tailgate that retracted into the body.
The Chevrolet Brookwood station wagons of this era had an integrated step in the rear bumper if the car had the 7 seat option, 2 rear facing seats fitted. Olds must have used the same bumper👍🇭🇲
At the shop I used to work at, we loved it when AC/Delco came out with the UniSet points, because it saved us a few minutes on tune-ups, not having to fiddle with installing a separate condenser. Then came HEI….high tech!
Great episode! The issue I personally had with "uni-points" was always quality of manufacturing. They worked ok when they worked. Sadly, if they were bad out of the box you couldn't return them.. Soooo better to go with individual parts - odds are good they won't all be bad.
Thanks for sharing!
A 68' 455 is a very good motor to build. Torque galore. Look at the heads and see which ones they are. Could be any number of heads...C,D,F,J. Some are quite valuable. Typically J heads are referred to as Junk though. The letter is on left hand lower corner of head.
I Love the Olds Vista Cruiser! It was the Cutlass Wagon! I think those cars are super cool. If you remember in Family Vacation, One of these was traded in for the BIG UGLY Family Truckster wagon. When they tried to back out they Crushed the Vista Cruiser. That was a criminal act in my book. Love the windows in the roof! With the woodgrain faded completely white and the top faded to Tennessee Orange, it gives it a two tone color scheme that I could really dig! Yes that is a Step in the Bumper for little kids to get into the sideways or rear facing seats in the very back.
Oldsmobile named those Vista Cruisers because of the roof windows. I had a ‘79 Custom Cruiser when I was broke in grad school. It had one of those 261 diesels that were based on the gasoline engines. They were so bad that Oldsmobile replaced mine with the V-6 at over 100K miles at no charge. I decided I’d keep driving it until it died even though my wife wouldn’t ride in it. I had 400K on it when it was stolen, parked between my wife’s Mustang and our neighbor’s Corvette. Three weeks later I got it back. I’d had enough and gave it to an elderly couple that needed a car. Sometimes I miss it. Great video. You didn’t have a lot to work with there.
Good for cruising the vistas. Love those old wagons.
It was called a Vista Cruiser because of the window panels in the raised roof.
Thanks, Captain Obvious !
Was watching this and was literally shouting come on baby you can’t do it you know you want to you you’re so close. Glad to see someone is taking her home and is going to continue on the work you started. My wife heard you say “ alright for the girls we go out with” and said “what’s that all about?” So had to explain the line to her, and then she said “ he sure likes his sandwiches, he seems to talk about having one all the time” so I had to let her know you were talking about a beer, another great video and both Duff and Mojo played a great part in this video, they both played their parts for comical relief, Duff jumping in the Pontiac and having a good sniff, and Mojo providing his wisdom on those points in his own special Mojo way.
I love how you give DD Speed Shop a shout out and how he gives you one! 🤣🤣🤣
Really enjoy watching you young guys making something of yourselves! I have been watching since the beginning. Great channel and content! Always a pleasure!!!
Can't wait for the black Dodge D-10]0 SWB video. I had a yellow '75 Adventurer as a daily driver with a 400 HP small block as a daily driver for about 5 years.
LOVED IT!!!
Gave to my Wife as her driver when we first got married.
She put it in reverse at high idle with het foot on the brake and BAM!!! Blew reverse out of the 727.
Took it to my transmission guy and got it fixed. When I picked it up he said. "YOU LET YOUR WIFE DRIVE THAT THING!"
Pulled the engine, put in a stock 318 and sold it to a friend.....man I miss it. Straight as an arrow and ZERO RUST.
Put the engine in the same thing exvpt 4WD with military 1 1/4 ton Dodge 4:09/4:10 axles nd made it a mud truck.
That engine SINGS and got 14 mpg in the 2wd.
Easy way to tell big block from small block on an Oldsmobile is right where you showed the casting number was, right behind the timing cover all the big blocks had a raised blade like casting on the flat spot from front of intake to timing cover.
This car is friggin awesome. I'm a station wagon guy. I drag raced a Roadmaster wagon. I can't wait to find another cool old wagon.
Nearly 2 hours! Very very nice! Thank you
And before I forget. Chin you are fantastic, you always get the sound level so good with your uploads!
Most youtubers don't even try.
I try to make it a priority, I've received varying feedback in the past.
Yea you gotta love when you get your ears cleaned a half dozen times on 1⃣ video.
Thank you for this excellent episode! You’re too good to us, another 2 hours, it’s gonna be hard to get used to less!
Glad you enjoy it!
a great old Vista boozer not many left that clean , could make a great sleeper. Great channel !!!
Good deal ! was going to comment about the counter clock wise rotor thing but seems like you caught it in the stick of time.. this time. Gotta love the GM banner when it comes to ye Oldsmo-Bubble.. Vista Cruiser's.. are super vista seeing machines..used to ride facing backwards in my youth and throw up on those behind us. 3rd row rear facing seating is a thing of the past.. olden days. another by gone era. Driving in the good ol U.S.A in my GM product Today.
Sleeperdude needs to add that to his fleet! I think it’s awesome!
Yea he does how cool would it be if he did and they collabed!
You and DD are about tied on the hackery on this week videos. With all them wall hangers you can make about 30 new videos like Puddin's pimp my shop videos.
I'm jealous cuz I haven't got an actual shop to pimp..
Hahaha😂😂
Think the rust dust blowing out of the water pump was hilarious. Red Foreman would beat the kids for that.
Also, grease your shaft before you beat it. It isn't snowy enough for that yet. Ha
My favorite GM marque, Oldsmobile, and the mighty 455 torque monster! Awesome! 🙂
Sleeperdude might be interested in this one
Holy shit! Sometimes you ramble too much. I found myself screaming, Start the damn thing!!!!!
😂😅😂
What’s a “kac” farmer anyway?
Well, I'd wager he needs a good pair of Wellies!

I know what you mean I use to watch him all the time and just loved his stuff but it has changed now he talks more then anything and most of the Vehicles are just old trucks that run I use to love back in the old shop him getting the stuck engines going or trying to get it going but it's been a long time since one of those came along but I just can't stand when he talks so much it tells me that the vehicle runs and he is just killing time to make a video.
@@MortskeRepair kac my initials and I farm. Enjoy your channel regardless of my shit talk.
Rain day home from work and a Mortske video. Perfect!
Enjoy!
I had a 1988 Toyoto Vista when I was stationed in Toyko, Japan with the USAF 2002-2006,
Here in USA ,we call it the Toyota Camry
My uncle bought a brand new 68 Vista Cruiser...
In its day , those were the cat's meow...
My dad & uncle went to the "mega" dealer with me & a cuz in tow ...
I was 5 yrs old .
My dad bought an Impala wagon & my uncle bought the Buick V. C. wagon...
Years later I took the 327 out of the Impala , rebuilt it & dropped it in a Camaro . (I think)
Might've put it in my 73 Chevelle ...
But , the Buick was loaded with a.c. , power windows, seats , ect & my dads Impala had an a.m. radio . Thats it .
My dad , who is 85 now , never bough a car with a.c. til I was a senior in H.S.
Cheapest penny pinchin skin flint in the tri state area still to this day..lol.
Thanks for sharing
Perfect timing. I’m just picking up an old square body that someone put a 455 in it back in the day. Education and entertainment day for me. 👍👍
interesting
Mortske: now we should have spark.
Morgan Freeman voice: Mortske, in fact would not have spark.
Dang while not the high performance version that brings back a lot of family vacations as a kid in the ol Vista Cruiser....yeah I'm old AF.
Bahaha classic
I nominate Chen for the best Editor, at the 2024 Mortski Awards😊
Its Thanksgiving so aside from my family, I am grateful to those who share their expertise so that others may learn from their successes and failures equally. Humble folks without temptation as the song says. So thank you to Mortske and Duff and Mogo too for giving of themselves for our entertainment.
Our pleasure
I FINALLY got to finish this video and I spit my energy drink out when you said "HIT IT WITH YOUR PURSE!!" MY uncles used to say that same thing and "Good Enough For the Girls I Go With" or my favorite "I knew a girl like that.." growing up it was always one liners like that you'd hear around the old timers hanging around as a kid, that's one of the reasons I love watching your videos dude it's always cool to see you doing the same things me and gramps used to do to pass the time during the days,I loved going to his friends yards and seeing old trash trucks and old cars I wish my daughter got to see old stuff like that she's 5 and loves old trucks anything loud like her dad's suburban she loves lol keep it coming dude love the content!
Good stuff!
That was the family car when I started driving. Roasting those tires with a wagon and the seemingly endless juice those 455's put out was amazing. I remember not want to pit my pedal to the floor. Good video on a great car.
Back in the 1970's custom van days people would cut the top off those vista cruiser sky roof and graft them onto the roof of their van.
You were talking about freeze plugs and that they can drill a hole through them and get them out that way. Well many years ago I heard of a new hire at a GM Garage. They had him bring a brand new truck inside in order to install a block heater "one that goes into the freeze plug hole" . He drilled a hole through it and then used what ever he used to pop the plug out.
He got that done and then reinstalled the Antifreeze , he put all back in that he got out but it was still low on coolant. He told the shop manager that he needed more antifreeze so they gave him a gallon.. Well he put that in and still it was not full so he asked for more antifreeze. The shop manger went over and they talked about all of the coolant that had been put into the radiator. The shop manager checked the Engine oil , it was way over full "with antifreeze". The new hire "mechanic" had drilled a hole right through the engine cylinder, all of the antifreeze was running through that hole and into the oil pan.
Yup that was his last day at the GM shop.
I'm old so I know a bumper step when I see one. Makes it easier for kiddos to get in & out of the back end when you swing the tail gate as a door. One of the best options was rear facing seats. Toss in a couple of kids & you could pretty much count on motion sickness. I can almost smell the vomit now. Ah, the good old days! 🤣
good to know!
So if a Mopar guy gets himself an Olds does that mean it's a Molds? 😆 Thank goodness for Mortske Monday!
Mortske is that man that Mojo needs to thrive
Very Nice, my sisters friend had a "cruiser" in the late 70's , man we get 10 or sometimes more and we go to the drivein good times. Thanks for the vid allways enjoy the education .
My grandfather had a 1968 Vista Cruiser wagon he used to haul fire wood for years. Chains on the rear with a set of 235/75/15 on the chrome uni-mags. Fun fact it didn't have a shift interlock and I had to sit in the car when he dropped the tree. Had my first accident in that car at 3 years old!!!
Thanks for sharing
That's the same car I took the body off and put my 57 Buick special on
What a ripper ❤

Glad you enjoy it!
Yeah buddy! Love some Oldsmobile love. I have a 69 442. I built it to match my dad's he bought when he came back from Vietnam. Thanks, my man good stuff.
That wall hanger is super cool! Love it when the bigger channels give the shoutouts to the smaller channels (startup channels).
My parents owned a Oldsmobile Vista. Brings back many memories of family vacations. I liked looking through the roof window. Ours had a power window on the tailgate and hidden storage in the back. It's under the floor panels that lift up. Thanks for the great memories.
Very cool!
1977….me and 6 or 7 other kids, crusin in the Vista cruiser…lots a fun memories
Not me Mr. Mortske. I love your station. i wait all week for a new a day movie for me to watch in between my household duties. i will never complain about the way that you do thangs. i learn.. 11/27/23 12.29 Pm cst USA..
One thing I love about your channel Mortske is the constant narration. For me I'm reminded of hanging out with my buddies working on old cars when I was a young guy.
Appreciate the feedback!
In high school, a buddy of mine had a '74 Olds Cutlass 442 with a 350, it was black with gold stripes. He came across a '67 Olds Toronado 425 high compression engine. We rebuilt it, put an aftermarket cam in it, and put it in the 442. Man did that thing roast the tires. You could punch it at almost any speed and the tires would go up.
Awesome
I have had an iguana, boa constrictor, scorpion, black widow spider, and a flying squirrel. I currently have 3 dogs, 4 cats, and 4 fish. I actually had the iguana litter box and leash trained. I actually took her out for walks like a dog, lol. I had her for 13 years, and she about four feet long. The iguana and the boa constrictor didn't even have a cage. They just stayed in the house. The boa constrictor was about six feet long, and feeding time was a big event. I would block the hallway off, throw his dinner in there, and everyone in the neighborhood would come over to watch. I trained him with people from the time he was a hatchling, so anyone could pick him up and carry him around. He actually lives in a petting zoo now, and I still go see him pretty often. I hand trained the scorpion, and I could walk around with him on my shoulder and freak people out. I have trained one of my cats to jump into my arms on command, and jump off the roof of the house on to my shoulder. Animals are smarter than we give them credit for. Maybe I am just a weirdo, lol.
Wow!
Love the old cutlass station wagon, great video. Thanks again.
I have always loved wagons! It’s now looking less likely that I’ll ever find my 68 442 so maybe a 70s Vista Cruiser? That one needs a lot of work and parts and I’m OLD. Maybe I’ll feel more inclined in the spring! Loved this video!
More Mortske Monday Magic! Just the greatest 😊❤️
I am fond of all the old stuff you showed as well, the intakes and bell housings (trans adapters really) the wall hanger stuff. I love finding neat old things that are kind of rare but also worthless to an extent but they make really good conversation pieces and look great on the wall. Awesome.
edit: I wonder how many people's heads the Duffleupagus joke went over!
Maybe hang that door where you film the Mortske minutes. Be a great back drop. I wouldn’t mind seeing it all the time.
Mortske Monday and Puddin Monday! What a great day to watch You Tube!
A mechanical tip from a 72 year old mechanic. To find top dead center number one cylinder on any V8 engine.
All you have to watch is the fifth cylinder in the firing order and when the intake valve begins to open your at TDC on number one.
Watch 65721843 intake opening
Adjust 18436572 both valves
1:01:50
BTW, GM Unitised points are good. Used them for years.
I'd make the switch to electronic ignition with a Pertronix module 😅😅😅
Mortske We have 3 cats, Duff by your side on the fender was helping you out he needed a bone for that guy. Enjoy your working thur the problems of getting a motor to fire off. I never had that training but watching you go thru it helps me to know what to look for when i start working on my old 91 truck. Have a great Thanksgiving guy.
Same to you!
I had a 72 Vista Cruiser in the early 1990's in green with a green interior. Sold it to a neighbor that restored it into a 442 clone with a dark green metallic paint with gold stripes on the hood and around the wheel wells. I almost wanted to buy it back.
I remember when this channel used to be about gettin old cars runnin. Now it seems to be about constantly pluggin merch and lookin at what came in the mail
when was the last time you saw me open any mail?
The Mortske crew can find one in the room of goodies.
It's a Vista Cruiser...You cruse the Vista's with it!!! Thanks for the entertainment.
One of my friends had a Vista Cruiser back in the day. I think he blew the transmission and pushed it into his backyard and left it. We went to fetch it for disposal and found baby pot plants growing on the rear floor board😂. Great green house for sure.
Oh wow!
Heh, 14:42 shows the loose freeze plug that reared its ugly head later, but I can see how distracting the rest of the crust was. Thanks for sharing the hard work, Dylan.
Yes a few of us noticed the counter, clockwise distributor rotation, right after the battery went in.
Dad worked at General Motors back then. And would get new employee cars every year. I loved his vista cruiser, sitting in the rear facing seat. waving to the people behind us.
Yes, that tailgate swings as well as drops so you can use that bumper step
good to know!
Quite the light show while performing the burn out!
Definitely
Man I love those old cars! Wagons bring back the better days of the US of A! Enjoyed a the content! You and Mojo always brighten my day! Stay blessed!
Stuff was made to last forever, ea mfr had to outdo the other.
Even in the 90s my grandfathers old toaster and 40/50s era freezer/fridge never gave up the ghost.
I love station wagons, they’re oddly cool and weird. My grandfather had a 53 Chevy handyman, and it was so cool. I’d love to find one to restore. I’m a new viewer Mortske and I love your stuff.
that's the same thing that Frankie Vali said in his 1975 hit. so close and yet so far....my eyes adore you.
Had a wild turkey that made his home on our back porch and would roost outside the back door. We named him Peeping Tom, because anytime you look out the back door he would be there staring at you.
I haven’t even finished this video, and I gotta say the pretty nice unit, and worth a little bit of money, carry-on
Hi Morski, we’re still watching 😊
If you're going to own a wagon the Vista Cruiser is just about the coolest one to have
When i was in vocational school auto shop, we had a similar 1968 buick special plain jane wagon to go to the auto parts store and pick up what the school needed a few times a day. It was just a plain old buick special, white with a blue vinyl interior, 350 2 barrel, automatic. But the thing ran like a top, the body had a few dings n dents, but i loved that car! Unfortunately, soon after i graduated, it went out for bid when the municipality got rid of unwanted older vehicles....and i never saw it again. I wish id known how to bid on it at the time. If i ever find another one, even in Mortske won the auction condition......😂😂😂
455, 400 turbo , 3.70 rear gears
22 gallons of fuel & 8 to 10.5 miles per gallon.
Now a 7.0 liter lsa engine would pull that along nice.
Be safe team.
Duff Dog in the thumbnail matches the colors of the Vista Cruiser!
Good thing he hopped up on the fender to boost morale as you plugged away through each problem/solution to get the job done.
Thanks Mortske-Love the Duff!
Our pleasure
That is literally my most favorite dream car ❤ I live in Canada. If you ever choose to part with it Mortske I would love to give that sweet girl a home
Had a 1970 Cutlass S with a 455 when I was 17. I LOVED that car, torque for days. It ate tires
Awesome!
Nice Vista Cruiser! Love those. I never understood a big block with a 2-barrel carb. A QuadraJet would get much better mileage, and have more power when you romp on the loud pedal, but maybe that's just me....and I'm still waiting to see if you spotted that freeze plug turned sideways in the right side of the block. Not gonna hold much water that way. LOL. Well, back to the video. Take care, Mortske, and stay cool, brother!
Love the Olds body style of that era.
The accessory bracketry on those engines are a headache and a half to mount if one has never seen them all in place. Pontiacs were just as bad with their bracketry.
Never had any luck with those unipoint assemblies, plain out hated them.
