- Hey everyone and welcome back to the explained series. Today I’ll be discussing the Tower Duo, Ho-Oh and Lugia and what makes them so awesome. I’ll be going over both of these legendaries separately to give them their own spotlight. We’re going to be learning many things about them, like what they’re based on, why they’re named the way they are, and their typings. So without further ado, let’s get into it.

*Lugia* = big water bird who for SOME UNGODLY REASON isn't Water/Psychic type. Even though he literally lives at the bottom of the ocean, and controls the ocean.

I really wish Lugia was water flying. It just makes so much more sense. I guess they didn't want Lugia to have a type advantage over Ho-Oh, Kyogre has a type advantage over Groudon so I don't understand why they didn't.
Justin Pina flygon isn’t flying Typ either but has the levitate ability
One thing we can truly notice is that they are the perfect counterparts of each other..One continuously keep's on flying to hide itself and protect weak pokemon while the other hide's itself in the sea just to protect it and control it's own power so it does not cause a problem❤️

For some reason the backstory/inspiration behind Ho oh and Lugia is the most mythical ever. I feel like this is how the legend story supposed to be, full of mystery and very traditional.
Yamato san Tradition and lore seems to be the motif present throughout the entirety of generation 2 and its remakes.

To me it's weird how little Lugia and Ho-Oh interact with each other and how little they have in common. Mew and Mewtwo, although not a similar, equal pair lore wise, interact a lot. Groudon and Kyogre are rarely seen without being at each others neck in the anime, and are closely related in the games. Dialga and Palkia could probably not even exist without each other, since space and time are so connected. And so on. But Lugia and Ho-Oh seem like tow standalone legendaries that have nothing in common besides happening to live in the same region.

I've only seen them fight in the Johto anime opening.
Probably because their natural, for lack of a better term, habitat is too far away from each other AND they both aspire for peace? One is like to retire to his chamber, the depths of sea, only resurfacing to maintain peace when the tree elemental birds throw hissy fit at each other and the other is chilling on the clouds, never coming down to land.
I’m a big fan of Lugia and ho-oh I was super sad that they never shared a movie, so i made one nothing fancy. Did not have much to do this quarantine. Hope you like.

@@Just0wnedEsport the way I see it as well as the peace thing since you mentioned it is they have no association with each other. Sure counterparts by games and media but they aren't like the other duos. All the other legendaries have a tie to the enemy organization. Mew and mewtwo were associated with TR. Mewtwo is literally a clone. Groudon and kyogre objectives of the enemy teams and are opposing forces. Same goes for reshiram and zekrom+Xerneas and yveltal. The parallels continue. But yeah the games were focused on paying tribute to asian culture and finishing the remnants of red and blue. Ho oh and lugia will never really have a reason to interact

Ik that most people probably like Lugia more than ho-oh but ever since I was little I always liked ho-oh more than almost every legendary.I’m sure it has to do with that before my cousin left for the military he gave me his Pokémon heart gold game as a gift because I would always watch him play it when I was little I’m so grateful he gave me this game considering how obsessed I was with the game.This all happened when I was 6 years old and I am now 15 and I love the game so much

One thing of design inspiration you missed:
In both Japanese and Chinese lore, there are mythical creatures commonly referred to as the Four Symbols which include the Vermilion Bird and the Azure Dragon. These are also clear design inspirations due to the coloring of both Ho-oh and Lugia, respectively. Also, the Vermilion Bird specifically has a connection to fire, thus deepening the fact of Ho-oh's fire type. It also had 5 colours, not 7, in the case of the Vermilion Bird, possibly also explaining the lack of a complete rainbow in Ho-oh's design.
Ho-Oh is and should be the most legendary of them all. There are tons of reasons for it.

wow this really do be an explanation of Ho-Oh and Lugia
Lugia always reminded me of The Blue Eyes White Dragon from Yu Gi Oh and the fellbeasts of the Nazgul in The Lord Of The Rings.Of course i had to get my hands in it , not to mention it absolutely looks more majestic than these 2 similarities. In competitive it has been an absolute monster for 5 consecutive generations. It even has its own movie and a really beautiful soundtrack.With its help Kyogre could defeat Groudon thanks to the raging waves along with the massive hurricanes and storms Lugia could create which would have the maximum duration of 40 days as well. One does not simply dislike Lugia.

Ho-oh and Lugia are monsters to fight against competitively. They both are walls. For example, I fought a trainer who had Ho-oh. Didn't do much damage to him so I tried poisoning him. He had rest. When I finally got his health low on like my last pokemon left standing he had RECOVER .....smh. Fighting tanky Ho-oh is a nightmare. Eats damage can heal off alot back and deal loads of damage too.
Nah lugia is a better defensive threat pokemon.
Ho-oh is an offensive if you have a rock move hed just died instantly to it or setup some stealth rocks to makes it hp in half
Of course he is going to make a video about legendary pokemon from his favorite gen.

I just started shiny hunting Ho-Oh last night in HeartGold version, and this doubled my motivation 🔥🔥🔥

My favorite signature move of a legendary Pokemon is Lugia's Aeroblast.
Man, they both needed a mega or a primal form (have them hold their respective wing/bell)
Great vid Mystic! I love the fact that the shiny Ho-Oh looks gold in coloration. This also leads me to believe that the Ho-Oh Ash saw in the very first episode of Pokemon was shiny. Also the Crystal Pokedex entry states "It will reveal itself before a pure-hearted trainer by shining its bright rainbow-colored wings." Sounds like Ash to me! I just love how this all connects.
So just about 20 years later and someone finally gives an explanation on Johto’s Legendaries?
I think the reason behind me and many other ppl liking ho-oh over lugia is the whole mystery around the former. Lugia, being so front and centre in the anime, just makes it blend in the bg with other legendaries whereas Ho-oh still feels like the most interest-sparking legendary after all this time.

Ho-Oh and Lugia will always be my favorite legendaries.
I always favored Lugia more than Ho-Oh, but Ho-Oh always intrigued me more. Lugia is more defensive whole Ho-Oh's strength is offense, particularly physical attack stat.

I love Lugia, but I always had questions about Ho-Oh. Not like in a bad way, it’s just there’s soo much about Ho-Oh that I wanna know. All I know is that all Ho-Oh does is just flies around the world still watching over people, and brought back those 3 Pokémon to life which who we all know as Suicune, Entei and Raikou, but I felt like there was much more behind him that Lugia. Lugia swims deep at the bottom of the sea because he’s just that damn strong. One single flap of its wings, he can create a whole natural disaster, but I haven’t seen much of Ho-Oh especially in the anime. He showed up a few times, but he didn’t do much besides kept flying. What really sparked my interest about Ho-Oh is that one episode when Ash, Brock and Misty was at Ecruteak City where Tin Tower bells was ringing thinking it have been a sign that Ho-Oh was coming

While I'm not 100% certain, I seem to recall reading somewhere that Lugia was considered to be a water type in development, but due to a tsunami or similar natural disaster taking place during development or not long before development started, the creators didn't want to connect a legendary to destructive water. Psychic was picked yes due to power, but also supposedly to help represent night by being more supernatural. [since before gen 7 they were the day/night legendary duo]

Always thought Lugia should've been Flying/Water instead of Flying/Psychic so that both legendaries have one ×4 weakness and could counter each other

I find it pretty interesting that the GREAT WALL of Ubers is so cute looking pokemon.
Lugia was also made by then head anime writerTakeshi Shudo, making it the only pokemon not made by Game Freak (though Ken Sugimori was the one who designed it). He also made it specifically for the 2nd movie, which ultimately surprised him when Game Freak chose to make it an official part of the roster

Both of them are honestly so good, I love these legendaries but I got a bias for Lugia because of the movie nostalgia.
I never saw and accepted Lugia as a bird. 😂 He is a dragon to me the same way Charizard is also a dragon for me.
Ho-Oh and Luigi are legends with connections. Rainbow Wing and Silver Wing and Tital Bell. Ash ran into both of them. I like the lore. Legends of Ecruteak City and The Whirl Islands.
I don't think the creators put this much time into the mythos of Ho-oh or Lugia as far as research goes

Have you heard of the cryptid called the Ningen? Giant white humanoids that live under water that sailors claim to see in the seas off Antartica. When I first heard of them and saw artists renditions of these creatures, I immediately thought of Lugia. It was the Japanese who even named these creatures, the Ningen. You may want to look into that. I believe they may have had more of an influence than the plesiosaur.

i think they made Lugia a Psychic Type so it doesnt counter its counter part, Ho Oh.
There's Kyogre and Groudon, as well as Xerneas and Yveltal.

No they did it because psychic type was considered the strongest, fitting for a legendary. Also Lugia is symbolized by the moon, which controls the tides of the sea. And spychic type rapresents that idea better than water type
Psychic types were gods for the first few gens until more types were introduced

The reason why Lugia isn't water type and has normal and psychic type moves is because it was originally considered for the last evolution of the togepi line. Elm himself hints towards this when you bring back togepi

I wish they would switch out the flying typing for Dragon for Lugia if you're going to base him off the dragon king at least give him a dragon typing that compensate
What if Ho-oh is the first Pokémon and he revived a bunch of regular animals that later turned into Pokémon. I mean it kinda makes sense because Entei and the other two were normal before reincarnation

According 2 ancient legend, lugia once lived atop tha brass tower & ho-oh lived atop tha tin tower; when tha brass tower was struck by lightning n burned down, lugia fled 2 tha whirlpool islands, & ho-oh abandoned tha tin tower to aimlessly fly round tha world

Lugia can still learn water type attacks.
i swear if you put your thumb over Ho-oh beak and eye, you could almost make a whole new Pokemon out of it. mainly just due to Ho-oh looks in the cover art, it looks like the neck makes another eye and the black mask like marking around it's eye looks like a mouth.
Both are really cool to me but I like Lugia better. I love how it’s based on a unique creature but it vaguely resembles a bird or a dragon.
I don't know if there is a comment already saying this but two characters in naruto are also named after those towers. They are pronounced just the way it looks.
Ho-Oh is one of my favorite legendary Pokémon but I do have a knit picky thought. I wish it wasn’t fire typing we already had fire chicken, Moltres. On top of that it gave birth to the three beast, one of them also being fire. Would have been cool if it were normal typing
