I rarely if ever have time to give individual feedback on an unsolicited demos (it actually takes me a long time to do properly) so hopefully being on a platform like this is a little bit of help. As an artist who has known a lot of people who have had less than ideal experiences with record labels over the years, it was an interesting conversation. I particularly liked how Joe emphasized the artist working independently, as I've know people who have signed to labels only to be told how to look, what to play, etc.

  • @RememberingGames

    That was totally fascinating! We don't get the chance enough to hear from people on the other side as small artists. He pretty much sums up all the reason why that'd be my dream to work with a big label. Sooo much grind work is provided for you, I wouldn't mind sharing tons of profits. I'd rather make 10% of 1 million $ than 100% of 46.35$ hahaha

  • @AndreasTabuMuntu

    Great conversation. As an artist myself I don't usually pay attention to such videos because most of the time these "label reps" love to beat around the bush a lot and say a lot of nothings. But this was quite refreshing. Plus he has a good vibe and his humility supersedes his career which makes him relatable and trustworthy.

      @@xXAjaxXx A funny 'band development story': In the late sixties the famous danish band, savage rose, was offered a record deal by RCA. They went to USA and RCA only had one condition - that they should go to Vietnam and play for the American soldiers. The band refused to sign, which made the RCA guys freak out completely. RCA had their passports and refused to give it to them, before they - as a punishment - had played 3 times a day for a month at their new club in LA, without pay.

    This was very insightful. Especially the emphasis on having a story.
    From a personal experience I've found finding a narrative the hardest thing to do, but I can imagine it being right up there with the most important things to have in your locker from a promotional perspective.
    With the right narrative it can really help you find the natural home/demographic for your work. I guess this is why I've held back from making risk investments in marketing my project. The reality is it would be pointless, you can't be just 'Music Guy' in such a saturated market.

    I hope this is not how they discover the ones who already have success and following and streams. We want to know how they discover the ones who have pretty much no numbers. Most successful musicians didn’t have anything happening before they were signed.

    • @BrandonShere
      @BrandonShere 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well if your talking the ones back before social media, they went out and played gig after gig establishing a real life community. No musician gets signed and big without hard work. These days, if you want to get signed you have to build a following, just how it currently works. You can get signed without a following man, email your music to 1000s if A&R’s but you won’t have any leverage for your deal. It just makes it so much easier to get shelved.
