I have had my tank off many times now and I have found that disconnecting the fuel tap diaphragm vacuum hose at the engine intake end rather than the fuel tap end makes the job a lot easier. Also the fuel tank breather hose can be fitted or removed when the tank is fully seated, it will just slip on or off and does not require a hose clamp to be used (there is no pressure in this line and only the fuel vapours go down it when the bike sits in the sun and gets warm) you can get to it from the left side of the bike. Use of the wood block is very helpful and I have one just like yours for this very job. Also if the fuel tank breather hose (metal part inside the tank) gets damaged or blocked you can replace the fuel cap with one that has the breather built into it, (I think the Honda shadow-I could be wrong here- or other V-twin) just make sure you block off the existing breather hose before fitting it. I bought one and keep it as a spare incase the tube blocks up in the future. Good job.
Few years back, I had to clean carbs three times in one summer, due to the bio additive being introduces to the fuel. I found getting the tank pipes loose was easier from the top, just hold the tank with one hand and wiggle the hoses with other hand. Having full tank always helps of course 🤣
Will try that next time. Not sure if the fuel line is even long enough, though. A couple weeks ago I had another set of hands helping me, that definitely made it easier.
