Another great video... Thanks. One problem I noticed with 17 is that when I add a jpeg (video 2) on top of a video track (video 1) that is not full size to completely cover the video track 1 you can see the video 1 track around the edges of the jpeg picture coming through. In 16, the jpeg would have black bars around it and it would prevent the video 1 track from being seen from behind. When, I now go back to my previous projects that I made in 16 this is occurring but was not prior to upgrading. Is there a setting to change to fix this as opposed to to having to cut out the video track 1 every time I want to add an image to my project. Regards.
Thanks for watching! That's a strange issue, I wonder if it's just a beta bug. I haven't noticed anything like that with images so far. Are you using the lates beta 5 version of Resolve? You can always crop the image to remove the black, but if it looked ok in 16, it should be ok in 17. That's why I think it might just be a bug in the Beta.

Hey man, you're welcome! I hear ya about the hobby. I think we all start that way. Wait until you make a few bucks from TH-cam, then go pick up Studio. For example, I've got a PC that is maybe a year or two old (an Acer Nitro), it has an i5 and a 1060 graphics card (I think, I'd have to check, lol). It was getting pretty sluggish using the free version, couldn't do much effects wise, slowmo or any retiming. Resolve was using pretty much all CPU and like 2% GPU. I put Studio on it, just to try and it made a huge difference on that PC. CPU usage was much lower around 50% and GPU usage was up to 50-75% and performance was much, much better. I don't know if that's typical or not....I've always been a Mac guy, so resolve and PC's is new territory. But I am thinking of building a big old PC editing monster, just to crank through stuff quicker. 😁 Don't worry about the UI, it's all in pretty much the same spots, just looks different - better and easier to find stuff. 👍
This looks super cool! Im loving the preview feature! If I have unfinished edits in DVR 16, can I just download the 17 and continue from there, or do Ineed to start them from scratch?
Yeah man, It's awesome! You should be able to download the new version, but it will have to update your database, so be sure to backup your database BEFORE you download and install the new one. Just to be safe. Don't want to loose anything. You may even want to export your project file that you're in the middle of. Again, just to be safe. Thanks for watching!
Hi Jason, Thank you for quick overview. I see you had lot of problems with your current computer setup. As I understand you didn't have much problem with DR16. And loved your video about optimizatizing -proxy mode. Is DR 17 such a power guzzler??? Thank you
Hi! DR17 actually runs just as good as DR 16 for me. Pretty much no difference. My computer is a 2015 MacBook Pro so it's just showing it's age a bit. It's only when I get into fusion it starts to really bog down. Normal editing with no retiming or scaling runs pretty smooth for me. I'd say backup your database and then upgrade to 17. 😁 Thanks for watching!
@@JasonYadlovski thank you for fast reply. Think I might go with Pro version as they have a deal with that Speed keyboard...that is if they are able to deliver in Cro. Also as I understood Pro works better as it better utilizes GPU.
You are correct, the studio version does use more GPU and certainly works much better. I have the studio version and it was a nice upgrade from the free version when I got it a while back. If you can get the speed editor, that’s pretty sweet I would do that. Best of luck with it! 😁👍
I've used Auto Alignment by Waveform in my latest upload, and I can tell you, it's fantastic! Didn't bother with a clap before each take, too! Simply cut the main camera clips where there was obvious audio, and then re-ordered them on the timeline, roughly to line up with the camera clips, then hit auto align and each one could was matched up super-quick! As if by black magic! 😉
Hi! Sure, There’s different ways to do it. You can use key frames in the rotation settings of the inspector when you’re in the edit tab, you could do it in fusion or even in the color tab by dropping on radial blur or zoom blur onto a node. Lots of options.
I have't made it that far yet, but I think there are some improvements, especially for exporting audio work....I'll keep you posted on what I find! Thanks for watching!
I haven't had any problems at all. Seems to be working as good as 16 did for me. I'm on a Mac though. Not sure if that makes a difference. I head some folks on PCs needed to update their graphics card driver and then it ran better. Maybe something to try.
@@JasonYadlovski I am on a 2019 MacBook Pro. DR 16 always made my system run hot, but it was fairly stable. DR 17 seems to be a bit more shaky. I have crashed out twice this morning already.
You just have to download 16 and install it again. But only do that if you backed up your Database before you installed 17. DR17 upgrades the database and I don't know if it's backward compatible.
I'm hesitant to try the beta version, even though I used 16 beta and had no troubles. As far as I can tell, Blackmagic releases and keeps Resolve in beta for a long time before removing the beta designation. I can run 16 until then.
@@JasonYadlovski If I didn't have the studio version already, I would totally be buying 17 and getting that free speed editor. You can look at it as you're getting Studio for free, or you're getting the speed editor for free basically.

Hi! I'm on a Mac, so I'm not sure what might be going on. I heard one person say they needed to update their graphics card driver. Maybe try that? It's probably a beta bug or something. Could try and reinstall it.
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks for answering Jason! I did driver upgrades . I thought more then likely those frequent crashes were generated because some other applications were running on the background, were eating up the Ram.. It's a memory intensive application I have 12 Gig and that should be enough but there was a ram eating monster called Autocad running along with a window update.. So I closed Autocad rebooted and it worked out better, but then again it was really slow and it did crash again. Do you have a link for windows soI could load the previous version.?. That Beta version is more then likely fine for more recent pc's .. Thanks again Jason..
I hear that. I know AutoCAD well, are used to use it every day in my former day job. 😁 I think they recommend at least 16 gigs of RAM for DR. Here’s a link to where you can find previous versions. www.blackmagicdesign.com/support Look at the bottom of the screen on the left-hand side under ‘latest downloads’. You’ll have to scroll through there and you should find previous versions of DaVinci Resolve.
I just got Divinci and most all the effects dont work for me except the light rays. I only have 8gb of RAM, do you think thats the problem? I have the free version also
Hi! Congrats on getting started with Resolve! It does sound like your system is a little under powered, they recommend at least 16 GB of RAM. The more the better. The free version also uses almost all CPU power whereas the studio version will use a lot of your GPU if you have one in your computer. This enables everything to run smoother in studio version.
@@JasonYadlovski thank you! I think i figured it out! I don't think I was doing my effects right. Are there any other effects I can download? Like if I want to make flames or something as an overlay

For some reason when I optimise my media, the clips shrink by quite a bit in the playback window, was just wondering if you have come across this issue & know a solution? Great video btw!
Hi! That’s strange, not sure what might be going on. First thought, it maybe it’s being optimized to a smaller resolution? You can check the project settings and see what it is set to.
@@JasonYadlovski hi yes It’s 4K footage that’s being optimised to 1080 x 1350 for Instagram, what’s weird is that when it renders out it is normal size, it is just small on the playback viewer which makes it hard to edit
Makes sense that the render is full size. When DR renders it always uses the full res footage unless you specify otherwise. It should shrink in the timeline or viewer though. That’s strange. 🤔
@@JasonYadlovski I’ve worked around it by just zooming it while editing & then zoom out again before I render it, this has never happened to me before so hopefully for my next project it doesn’t happen again
Hi! First make sure you have Live Save on so you never loose any work. Second just give it a restart and see how it works then. My Resolve (all versions) have always done that from time to time.
Thanks! It's actually just a white backdrop and I light it with 2 LED flood lights on the floor and 1 LED strip light on the ceiling. I can get any color I want, it's a pretty sweet setup. THanks for watching!

I actually bought mine a while back from Core Microsystems because they were the only one I could find that would just email you a key. The rest mailed a key to you, which makes no sense, lol. It would be way easier if you could buy it right though BMD's website. I don't know how you get the speed dial though....
Hey all - thanks for sharing your feedback. Hopefully it's fixed in the full release for you. I'm on a MacBook Pro. Made my last 2 videos in DR17 and didn't have any issues, maybe it's more on the PC side? Thanks for watching!
The speed editor looks useless. The only thing I want is a fine control on the crop sliders. So frustrating trying to adjust 1 pixel at a time on cropping in from sides or top.
Hey Jeff - for the crop sliders, you can try just plugging in the number once you’re close to where you want. Or if you click your mouse and hold the left button down on top of the crop numbers you can slide your mouse back-and-forth to adjust it as well. Maybe that will help. Thanks for checking out the vid!
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks Jason but this is no help at all. Every other program has 2 arrows to increment crop 1 pixel at a time up or down. It is very tedious to retype the value every adjustment. Also the sliders are not fine enough to control. 1 pixel movement on the slider is about 20 on the video. The sliders are useless. Resolve needs to fix this instead of trying to sell more special keyboards and external panels.
@@JeffBourke I'm not super familiar with resolve but have you tried holding control or shift as you use the slider? Many programs implement throttled controls with the use of ctrl or shift.

I don't know if that's typical or not....I've always been a Mac guy, so resolve and PC's is new territory. But I am thinking of building a big old PC editing monster, just to crank through stuff quicker. 😁
Don't worry about the UI, it's all in pretty much the same spots, just looks different - better and easier to find stuff.
Thanks for watching!
thi was very helpful thank you
You’re welcome! 😁👍
Thank you Jason!
You’re welcome!
Hi Jason,
Thank you for quick overview.
I agree, it's awesome and works really well! I've used it for a few videos already and it's very good. No issues lining up anything yet!
Hi Jason,
Can a spin be produced to close out a video? Not a transition as such...
Hi! Sure, There’s different ways to do it. You can use key frames in the rotation settings of the inspector when you’re in the edit tab, you could do it in fusion or even in the color tab by dropping on radial blur or zoom blur onto a node. Lots of options.
Love the review 😀 does they have new features for export ?
I have't made it that far yet, but I think there are some improvements, especially for exporting audio work....I'll keep you posted on what I find! Thanks for watching!
Great video.
Thank you!
I figured I'm going to wait to update to the actual version of 17 whenever it comes out, even though the Beta version wouldn't be too bad
Awesome man, you really can’t go wrong either way. 👍😁 thanks for watching!
Are you having more problems with the system crashing out? I have been using 17 for two days now and it has crashed on my about 10x more than normal.
It could be because it's still a beta version. Maybe stick with 16 until the full release comes out?
@@JasonYadlovski - How do I go back to 16?
You just have to download 16 and install it again. But only do that if you backed up your Database before you installed 17. DR17 upgrades the database and I don't know if it's backward compatible.
I'm hesitant to try the beta version, even though I used 16 beta and had no troubles. As far as I can tell, Blackmagic releases and keeps Resolve in beta for a long time before removing the beta designation. I can run 16 until then.
I think that’s a great approach. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@JasonYadlovski If I didn't have the studio version already, I would totally be buying 17 and getting that free speed editor. You can look at it as you're getting Studio for free, or you're getting the speed editor for free basically.
Hi Jason,
Love your videos and the clear concise way you inform those of us new to video editing in a way that we can follow.
I’m in the U.K. and I can not find any link to a speed editor being supplied free of charge if you upgrade, is this just a USA offer?
Hi! Thanks for checking out my videos! I appreciate it! I don't think it's a USA only offer. I actually have looked for the deal since I already had studio. I'm not sure who may be selling the package deal. Sorry I can't help more! That speed editor does look sweet though. 😜
Hi Jason,
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post, I will checkout Blackmagic's UK helpline tomorrow as I have not seen the offer anywhere, I was thinking of getting the studio version, but if comes with the editor as well, my mind is made up..
It’s a great deal. I’d totally do get it.
@@JasonYadlovski I've got my place in the queue, not expecting any editors into the UK until the New Year, but 2021 is going to be so much better than 2020..
Hi Jason just installed the 17 version and it keeps crashing on my PC with windows 10 .. Do you have solutions for this problem? Thanks..
I think they recommend at least 16 gigs of RAM for DR. Here’s a link to where you can find previous versions. www.blackmagicdesign.com/support Look at the bottom of the screen on the left-hand side under ‘latest downloads’. You’ll have to scroll through there and you should find previous versions of DaVinci Resolve.
@@JasonYadlovski Ok thanks Jason!
Thanks!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Yes, you can use a service like motion array to get assets for overlays.
@@JasonYadlovski thanks!
I couldn't find any reseller that was selling the Speed Editor bundled with Resolve Studio. But great video nonetheless.
Thanks! I’m betting that the speed editor will be available when the full release is. Maybe they aren’t giving it with the Beta version. Thanks for watching!
Bhphoto is selling 17 now they will ship the speed editor when it arrives. First come first served.
Great Job Mate! Love your videos already! Suscribed for more!
Awesome! Thanks so much for checking out my vids and for the sub! I appreciate it! 😁👍
What headphones did you have on in that short clip?
Hi! I’ve got a pair of Sony MDR-V6 headphones. I’ve had them for probably 17 years and they still sound great. 👍😁
Jason Yadlovski for some reason it seems to be be only doing it to my vertical videos & not my horizontal videos? I’m not sure why this is happening
LOVED it
Thanks! I appreciate you watching! 😁👍
Still mind-blown by the number and extent of changes, although I'm waiting for final, not beta, before updating.
Yeah man, so many awesome changes. I backed up my stuff and got going with the beta. 😁
Bro my resolve stop responding while I edit my video close its self what will I do
Hi! First make sure you have Live Save on so you never loose any work. Second just give it a restart and see how it works then. My Resolve (all versions) have always done that from time to time.
@@JasonYadlovski thanks for ur help sir
You’re welcome!
I wonder if we have a magic mask fusion tool, that would be so useful.
Not sure, we'll have to check it out! Thanks for watching!
The background music needs to be turned down a couple notches, but other than that AMAZING update video.
Thanks man! 😁👍
Drop the level of the background music.
Thanks for your feedback! 👍
Man, I love your blue and green background? Is it a green screen ? Thank u
Thanks! It's actually just a white backdrop and I light it with 2 LED flood lights on the floor and 1 LED strip light on the ceiling. I can get any color I want, it's a pretty sweet setup. THanks for watching!
@@JasonYadlovski thank u for your answer ! Keep the good videos coming :)
You’re welcome! Stay tuned, I’ll keep the videos coming!
Which link brings me to the resolve 17?
Just go to the Blackmagicdesign website: www.blackmagicdesign.com/
@@JasonYadlovski awesome thank you. I wasn't really satisfied with 16.
@@JasonYadlovski I just went out the the website and there is notes that say there are resellers? Seems like they make it hard to take out money. Not the best business approach. Should be big yellow button that says buy now... Ugg. Anyone done this (with the included speed dial).
Right on the front page is shows there, and then you click in and only the "reseller" option...
Yeah if you want to purchase Studio, you have to by it though places like B and H, Adorama, Amazon or Core Microsystems. I actually bought mine a while back from Core Microsystems because they were the only one I could find that would just email you a key. The rest mailed a key to you, which makes no sense, lol. It would be way easier if you could buy it right though BMD's website. I don't know how you get the speed dial though....
@@JasonYadlovski ive downloaded the 17 beta and already love it. I may buy the studio come tax season if biden doesnt screw that up
Installed it yesterday, it is lagging. I have a good PC though
Same here, very slow performance
Propably is not fully optimized yet and that it can have a lot of debugging code still.
Hey all - thanks for sharing your feedback. Hopefully it's fixed in the full release for you. I'm on a MacBook Pro. Made my last 2 videos in DR17 and didn't have any issues, maybe it's more on the PC side? Thanks for watching!
Have you noticed that everyone at Blackmagic Design wears only solid color clothing? :)
Haha, interesting. It's their color though....makes sense. 😜
@@tommygunrunner4656 thanks Tommy. I will certainly try this.
AWESOME...
Thanks for watching!
RIP already bought resolve a month ago and now they include speed editor. hmm
Ahh! I know right! I bought this year too. I want a speed editor, lol.
i'll just buy it again lol
You should mention that Magic Mask is not available in the free version
Hi! I don't think I realized it wasn't in the free version when I made the video, but yeah, it's only in Studio. Thanks for watching!
Can confirm. I got the studio and speed editor. Have to say the dial is a game changer.
Awesome! Maybe I can get Black Magic Design to send me one. 😁
Thank god i use streamlabs. It syncs both up while i record
Nice! 👍
If you ever have any fiddly problems with Streamlabs OBS, try using just the OBS version, which I found seemed more stable & less glitchy.
Music killed it for me. Couldn’t wa5ch.
Hey man, thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it. Thanks for giving the video a shot. Hope you were able to find a video about all the great features! 😁👍 they really are pretty sweet.
Good video but LOUD music

computer slow? on a mac?! impossible!. Now you are out of money on a $1000 computer that wont even edit video right. When will people learn. smh
Haha, I’ve had my MacBook Pro a long time. It still works great for most of the type of video I edit but getting into fusion it struggles. It’s Great for photo editing too. But, we will see maybe I’ll build a nice video editing PC. 😁
Awesome, thanks for the tip! Still debating if I should build a PC or wait for the new 16” MBP’s to come out. Tough Decisions! 😁
Just get a pc pls
