    thru out the whole song the video is framed to look like a pic on instagram and then when the narrator of the song starts posting abt losing their mom the framing gets wider to sort of show that the narrator is being more honest to show that these basic instagram girls are real humans behind their posts

      And the balloons say 27 which means she lost her mom at around 17 and her dad has now passed too. So all the vapid posts are covering up a lot of pain. The story with a lot of social media posts. They all have an actual person behind them.

      Three little words. A couple of doves. And a ring on her finger from the person that she loves.
      And here she is, having lost her mother at 17, without anyone to give her advice on being married or any other fascet of being an adult. And not even a dad to walk her down the aisle. Bo has a way of hitting you right in the guts if you're paying attention.

    I lost my mom in 2017. Occasionally I will post something - like on her birthday or on the anniversary of her passing - where I'm directly speaking to her. I figured out that I do that because what's most heartbreaking to me is that the world is forgetting her more and more each day... it makes me feel like she's closer if I know that other people are thinking about her and remembering her like I am.

      That's how I always saw it. The words they're saying are them speaking to their loved ones. Posting it on social media is making it a celebration of their life. And it's nice to grieve WITH people.
      I almost wonder if Cliff's awkwardness around it isn't partly motivated by... jealousy? Or feeling excluded? It's hard to pin a word on that feeling. Men face SO MUCH social pressure to never show feelings or pain, and here these people are, completely free to express their grief and celebrate their love for the person they lost.
      It's not an attack on Cliff, either, saying it could be jealousy. I'm a trans woman who waited until later in life to transition, so I've been on both sides of societal expectation, and so many things like this used to bother me to my core or feel awkward and I never quite understood why, and now that I'm free from so many societal obligations and expectations, if I think about having to be caged like that ever again... I would be ENRAGED. I'll never again live under bullshit expectations like that. But everyone society deems as "man" not only has to live cut off from expression and support like that, they're not even allowed to be upset about their inner life being suppressed like that.

    • @ImaCatMaia
      @ImaCatMaia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Brooke-rw8rc Yeah, societal expectations could be an underlying factor. Those constructs are pretty powerful! It could be a biological affect in part as well though. Hormonal differences definitely affect the way our brains work on an instinctual level.
      Congratulations on your transition! My spouse is MTF and they started their transition at 40. They're definitely more open to expressing themselves emotionally now that they're out and being treated. My son is FTM - he has been out and being treated since he was 15 - and I sometimes wonder if that has been a factor in his emotional changes. He's not as "lovey" as he used to be, if that makes sense. So many different factors influence how we think, feel, and react though. We're very complicated beings so I don't believe we'll ever fully know.

    • @Brooke-rw8rc
      @Brooke-rw8rc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ImaCatMaia Your spouse started their transition at the same age I decided to! I didn't get hrt until 41 and it's been just over a year now, but I definitely emotionally respond differently! Before transition, I'd be LUCKY if I could cry 3, 4 times in a year. It felt like a physical block between my emotions and external expression. Let's just say that is NOT a problem anymore! ;)
      My friendships have also never been deeper, I'm close friends with my ex-wife again, and my Mom and I have never had this kind of closeness before.
      It's really awesome that you have two trans people so close to you and are caring and respectful of both! 💙 I know we're not always the easiest people to understand sometimes, and it's really heart-warming to hear about people who are willing to try. Thank you.

    The framing of the video is narrow like Instagram while he is joking about "White Woman's Instagram" but when he is getting real about the mother and father the framing gets wide to show the context of it's real life. A little spice of introspection that people behind the Instagram posts are real people. The levels of genius is absurd.

    I don't think it's weird at all for people to write letters like this to lost loved ones. I think that they are trying to tell the people that they care about how they are feeling and to keep the memories alive. I also think that this isn't the point of that section. You might notice that the framing of the video expanded as he came into that section and then contracted again as it went out. I think Bo was using this to highlight the fact that what you see on a person's Instagram is a small fraction of who they are as seen through a limited frame. That even though he's making fun of them right now he realizes that there are real people behind these accounts.

My friend didn't let me say I'm fine and put on a face, he made me face my grief but he was there to help every step of the way. • @Spaceytears
    @Spaceytears 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One of the main assets this song has going for it is the fact that it's purpose isn't to make fun of women being women, it's to make fun of a specific kind of social media performance that white women specifically fall into a lot of the time, and the performative activism that seems to come with that. "Comedy" is his critique of performative activism when it comes to white male comedians, and celebrities at large. Most of the beginning of the special covers different viewpoints of performative activism as a whole and it's really good.

    How I always understood this song, was as a kind of double call out.
    At first he's just making fun of those instragram girls, who seem so shallow, and a lot of people will probably go "Yeah, they're so shallow!" at it (me included), and then he shows that they're still people.
    We're quick to judge each other, and call someone like the girl in this song basic, and a lot of the time, we forget that that person is also a someone, with a story, with happy moments, and hardships...
    So yeah... there's a discussion about wether or not this song is sexist, but it really isn't.

  • @ZoeBateman
    @ZoeBateman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    it's such a good song, and the visuals are very purposeful too. It's the kinda square instagram aspect ratio for most of it, but the part where "the white woman" is talking to her mom has the picture widen, it's not just a cliche instagram post. These are still real people with real experiences and feelings. Leaves me feeling a kinda somber feeling for the rest of the song, i.e. this woman has/is coping with the loss of her parents, but is trying and even thriving elsewhere. Makes it more endearing instead of something to laugh at

  • @nuncapasaran9374
    @nuncapasaran9374 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Weirdly this is one of my favorite songs from Inside. It's not the powerhouse of some of the others, but it's really meaningful in layers in a really understated way. It's just the way he structures his songs, he can't help but make them smart and rip your heart out a little...even when it's about some girl's instagram. I think the song spends a lot of time making you participate in shitting on this woman and being kind of voyeristic (hello, internet)--and maybe on some level a "white woman's instagram" is a little derivative and silly...but once it expands the ratio and goes into the woman's personal life and triumphs over grief, getting married, working hard and living in her own place...and then making fun of her feels kind of offputting in the next part. But he's also not being super mean spirited, either. Maybe instagram is some people's way of expressing themselves even if they aren't super original or creative with it. Like, maybe the chick just likes pumpkins lol.

      Actually there is a natural reaction in heterosexual man, me included, to not wanting to see homosexuals making out. For us it's just something we try to avoid not because of hate or disrespect or anything, but we just don't like to see it. Does that make sense?
      I tried to be most precise because it has nothing to do with respect or anything, it's just a personal preference thing and a natural trait in heterosexual men, at least those who have no doubt about their sexuality.

      @@awalkingshadowmusic No, that doesn't make sense 🤷🏽‍♀️ It is not a natural reaction - it is learned behavior. If you are an adult that cannot watch a music video that has 2 men kissing (or, in this case, a video that shows a man's buttcheek for 1-2 seconds) without drawing attention to your discomfort - that's problematic.
      Though you may not realize/intend it - that kind of behavior is homophobic. If someone is secure in themselves - they won't give a crap what anyone thinks of them.

    I do actually find it to be weird when people post personally directed messages to their dead loved one, but I suppose I understand it to be a way of saying "I need support now". I have noticed that it's become more of a trend now, but I'm not sure that it actually detracts from the authenticity of the feelings of most "ground level" posters; it could simply be the phenomenon of normalized expression, and may actually opens a path of dialogue that didn't exist before. Still weird to me, though.

    I feel like this song is 3 parts: A light hearted set-up, a reality check, and a reframing.
    First, it's completely ragging on the "basic white woman" instagram. It's so predictable and unironically unoriginal. You think "OMG I know this person!!!" and it gives you this smug feeling of superiority. The refrain is a sarcastic "Is this heaven? Or is it just a white woman's Instagram?" referring to the bullshit idyllic aesthetic that these cookie cutter IG posts try to convey.
    Then part 2 is where the camera pans out and we're reminded that there's a real person with real struggles and real feelings behind these vapid posts. We THOUGHT we knew this person, we had them packed neatly into this little box, but we actually had no idea. For me, it was actually kind of jarring. This feeling that I was in on a joke about how dumb IG and that whole scene is, but then there's this reality check that this is just a person trying to make it in the world just like me.
    Then part 3 it seemingly jumps back into the same theme as part 1. We got a moment of vulnerability but it's quickly covered back up by this false narrative that everything is perfect. But now the posts are narrating a story. There are still the filler posts, but then we hear that she's now engaged to this boyfriend that she was so crazy about. Now that we know that this girl who went through pain and suffering is finding a light at the end of the tunnel, when we get back to the refrain, there's a bit more sincerity to the question, "Is this heaven?"

    I showed this Bo video to a white woman instagramer and she said "Shit I'm guilty of like, half this shit."

      As for the posting "letters" to loved ones on social media, I think there is a shallow reason and a deeper reason. 1) they might just want the attention. But 2), they may just want to feel heard.

    I really didn't care for this special. He got really weird on Inside. Like, nothing felt right. It was just uncomfortable to watch, haha! I got very few laughs which is crazy because I absolutely adore every other special of his I've ever seen. This seemed like the pandemic was really getting to him or something.
