      20 000 years of this, 7 more to go - refers to both the length of time civilisation has been around for, and also the interglacial period we're in should be just about up. That's right, when the climate deniers say we're actually heading for another ice age, technically there is truth to that - we *SHOULD* be. But what we're going through now is not how it works when heading into one

  • @nlytnone2256

    That funny feeling- just a daily grappling with so many things that were never supposed to be associated with each other. The resulting feeling that we are displaced in reality because reality is effectively becoming displaced. It can mess up the mind. And for sure it starts to feel like it's all ending- the world takes on an unreal, confused edge when you notice it, like how dreams feel upon waking.
    At any rate, try the song "Comedy" from the same special. It's delightfully entertaining.

    The line that always guts me in this one is “twenty thousand years of this, seven more to go” - in reference to the Metronome countdown clock in Times Square - it hit me like a sucker punch the first time I heard it. I absolutely love this song - the vibe I think he’s going for is “amateur indie musician at an open mic/bonfire,” hence the “sorry, I’m not very good, but I’m gonna play anyway” disclaimer at the start. The “ocean at your door” line is also in reference to climate change, I believe. We are all perusing the world’s information on our phones while the ocean quietly rises around us, could even go so far with the metaphor as to say the ocean is knocking at the door to try and grab our attention before it’s too late. Idk. Regardless. This song (this whole special, really) is a gut punch and a commiseration and a condemnation and catharsis all in one. Brilliant. Thanks for the react.

    • @lyricsdomatter
      @lyricsdomatter 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's also a reference to the age of human civilisation in a general sense, and the interglacial period that allowed it to become established and flourish - which SHOULD be ending now and thus another ice age (which is ironic that climate deniers use the 'actually we're going into another ice age now' argument). Like not to start any stan wars but f*ck T.Swift being called the greatest living songwriter when we have this man here. I'm a pretty good wordsmith but I can't even dream of touching his level. Nobody can

    There’s a line in this song that says “total Agoraphobic” Agoraphobia is the fear of is a type of anxiety disorder in which you fear and avoid places or situations that might cause you to panic and make you feel trapped, helpless or embarrassed.

    • @lyricsdomatter

      yes, it's what all eyes on me is about, very specifically about the first panic attacks he had on stage while filming Make Happy (hence the line 'look in my eye' instead of eyes - he means camera lens). You can see at the end of the Kanye Rant, the look of utter terror on his face at the end where he very quickly says 'goodnight i hope you're happy' and literally drops the mic and runs off stage. The final yell/scream in the song was not scripted and if you know how Bo operates you know that's NOT something he does, ever

    I will always click on one of your reactions and this one I clicked faster than most! I think the trick with this song is that the whole thing is serious. We're in an age where ALL of this information is thrown at us at once, and some may give us that funny feeling on its own; but when it is TRULY thrown at us all at once, such as in the format of this song, you can't help but feel the looming dread of it all. One second we see Logan Paul and the next we hear of a mass shooting. The age of Information has been our downfall, it seems; and nothing sums it up better than this song.
    On a less grim note, Sexting and Facetime with my Mom are both funnier songs of his! Although, I haven't seen enough people react to Comedy (though I'm a bit biased cause it's my favorite)!

    So many of the lines in this song are incredible. I noticed you passed over one of my favourite lines relatively quickly, as it seems funny on the surface.
    "reading pornhub's terms of service" seems to refer to being so numb and done with the site itself that you just read the terms, since you have nothing interesting anymore.
    "and going for a drive" sets up the expectation that bo is leaving the house, but we know he isnt. and its followed up in "and obeying all the traffic laws- in grand theft auto five"
    It's not saying he left the house, its saying he craves normalcy so bad (but is so agoraphobic and unable to leave the home) that he mimics his real life in the game (as some people have pointed out, a very violent "do whatever you want" type of game). He just wants a normal life again- a time before covid and all this misery.
    There were actually a few articles written about this, and about why games like animal crossing became so popular over the pandemic. People enjoy playing games about daily life and monotany- our recration becomes a replacement for our own lives.
    Am i looking into this too much? maybe. Am I late? maybe. But i wanted to say it

    THANK YOU CLIFF FOR THIS!!!
    I love how you defended his singing ❤
    Everything he sings about in this song are literally things he has said, in various interviews over the years, that bug him bc, to him, they don't fit, and add to that funny feeling, as if these things are contributing to the end of civilization somehow.
    7 years refers to the Climate Clock, which says that 7 years is the tipping point...but if you remember, in All Eyes On Me, he says to us(about the world ending) Honey, it already did, and I still wonder if he meant ending from Covid, or the Climate Clock countdown hurtling towards it's, and our civilization's, enevitable end.
    Derealization is something he and many others have dealt with in this information-saturated life.
    This song is where I had to stop watching the special and sob. I felt the existential dread in every word that was offset by the folksy pop sound of the song...perfect satire. It took me months before I could listen to this without crying over it's meaning...and still, I found the dark humor in it comforting, because, with this one song, he has woken up so many people. I hope yer Dad likes it, too.
    You KNOW I want more Bo! (although I do check out other reactions, too...came for Bo, but stayed and subbed bc your reactions are genuine and intelligently expressed)
    3.14 APPLE PI is the bravest and most humble rap, Bo says, and I think you would enjoy it, too.

    I think the funny feeling is essentially existential dread. The song reads kind of like a rundown of all the random news lines of the day, and some it’s happy, some of it’s terrifying, but the main reaction is feeling insignificant and unable to do anything about any of it other than simply consume it and wait for the next thing to happen. Just that realization that everything is out of your control, and that’s either comforting or scary or both. Idk that’s just my hot take - it’s a great song! Very satirical Bob Dylan type vibe for me.
    Also, another seemingly irrelevant idea I had about the “obeying all the traffic laws in grand theft auto 5” line is that I think he’s inferring that we’re headed towards this ‘metaverse’ era and I think gta 5 was kind of the first big semi-metaverse playground for people, and when he, somewhat casually, says obeying all the traffic laws, I think he means like eventually we’ll even be policed online because the metaverse will be where we live our lives. Even that will be a place we can be controlled when the point was supposed to be it’s a place where we can do whatever we want. Just like what happens to everything, I suppose. Idk maybe a reach but just an idea I had when I was lit re-listening to this lol.

    The book on getting better being hand delivered by a drone part after he mentioned agoraphobia kind of hit me hard when I first heard it, and tbh still does. I started having more agoraphobic tendencies in the years before the pandemic but still managed to get out for some things, and then when the pandemic hit and everyone needed to stay home it made hiding away the right thing to do and I clung to that. Because of other health conditions everything I got was either brought over by my bf or ordered online and delivered. The things that helped me get out before like needing to go shopping went away, and even my doctors appointments that may have helped me were via phone. That along with how heartbreaking it was to see so many others suffering and losing family just became too much and even once there was a vaccine and things started opening up going out still felt like too much. >.

    This song is so strangely super comforting to me, it just never fails to sort of lull me into a calm
    On top of that, I'm someone who struggles a Lot with Hard dissociation.
    Struggle might not be the right word bcs the thing with it is that you can't really struggle against it bcs you don't even know you're doing it except during, for me, very rare and very brief moments of clarity. At my level it's completely subconscious and it affects everything, memories, thoughts, and emotions. I haven't had a clarity moment in so long now (2 years maybe) that I have no idea what my current state with it really is.
    There's not really any help for it either (most I've tried to talk to don't even know what it is) And even if there was, do you want to? since dissociation is something that happens when something is too much for you to handle... so what would undoing it do to you?

    I read this song as being Bo scrolling his feed and just reporting what he sees, and every once in a while getting that "funny" twinge of "oh, wait, something BIG is FUCKED UP. 😳" and then most people just drift back to scrolling.
    This is a song about waking up to the world around us.

    Gift shop at the gun range, mass shooting at the mall is a juxtoposition or a flip flop. A gift shop is a small place to shop in a place you go shooting and the shooting at the mall is a lot of shooting at a place you go to shop.

    Hey Cliff. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of his newer stuff that is light hearted and funny. He's VERY serious. I guess the "lightest" in his newest special would either be "Sexting" or "Facetime with my Mom." And "30" is a good look at getting older, since you mentioned that. Cheers, love your reacts!

    To all fans of this song: I really love how it has inspired a bunch of other songwriters to write additional verses, creating a sort of collective grief for our moment. Of the many such videos out there, I particularly recommend this one by Philip Labes -- th-cam.com/video/6VagPcuwKjc/w-d-xo.html (and no, I'm not connected to him in any way other than supporting his patreon -- I just really love it).

    The most common sentiment I've seen here on what the setup as a whole is referencing is Elliot Smith, but I'm pretty sure it's meant to be The Simpsons, James Taylor singing about planes crashing down to earth while the astronauts are stuck on a shuttle that wont be able to re-enter without burning up because homer broke the door

  • @jasonmorrell148
    @jasonmorrell148 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this is over a year to late but I've watched most of your videos reacting to Bo and the thing you're really missing is the context. You really really have to watch his Netflix special "Inside" as a whole before you can really get these songs. They work pretty good as stand alone pieces but the thing as a whole is so much better than the sum of it's parts. The "funny" part of it is the overall scope of what he did. It's like one long art piece/comedy bit about mental health, covid, isolation, introspection etc. It starts fairly light and happy and gets darker as it goes on. He's spiraling into depression and sadness and madness the further in it gets and as the year passes with him stuck inside working on his special. It's fucking brilliant. The songs themselves don't do that justice without being in the proper order and context. Do yourself a favour and just watch it all. Would really love to hear your take on it after than.

  • @Charsept
    @Charsept 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    He clearly had a hard time with the pandemic. I feel lucky that my mental health is in a good place where the last couple years hasn't really affected me.
    But I try to empathize with those like Bo that had it rough. 🙏

    But the magic is that he's able to talk about something that should be funny like reading pornhubs terms of service, or obeying laws in GTA, but make them come across as anything but funny (at least in my mind). Even silly stuff like that that should be funny can cause that funny feeling of existential dread

    This one in pair with the fake Ted Talk skit (the one where he has like 3 voices going all at once) from his Outtakes work really well together (if you haven’t seen that one yet)!
    While this one talking a bit on irony in a lot of ways, the existential dread of the post-modern age is a common theme between both this one and the fake Ted Talk section The ending of the Ted Talk one gives me major chills every time tho…
