      Totally. These reaction videos are a tricky thing. On the reactor's side they're reacting to something and giving an opinion after just one listen, knowing that some songs take at least a couple of listens to fully understand, or at least a bit of time to let it sink in. Sometimes the whole meaning changes after the song is over and you know the overall theme, but as a reactor you might need to keep creating content and don't give it a second go. And even if they do, they might not want to waste time in making a second video talking about their new understanding of a song you already did.
      And on the viewer's side sometimes we come down too hard at a reactor that didn't get the song after the first listen or didn't like a great song as much as you do, and you forget that maybe that song took a couple of listens to grow on you or for you to understand what it was really saying.

    I'd like to point out two things about the part about "her". 1. Unlike the rest of the song, which is described as if happening right at that moment, everything about "her" is taking place in the past. 2. The section of the song ends with church organs.
    Make of those two facts what you will.

    • @MovhisMocjaoa
      @MovhisMocjaoa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      I heard that the lyrics where the beat changes and he mentions “her” were actually based off of someone from his school who killed herself. Not sure how true that is but it certainly sounds like some sort of funeral march at the end, and you make a good point about the past tense thing

    Dude I love this song! I'm a trans guy, I was bullied in school not with the F slur but the female equivalent (I'm actually bi though lol) and I remember hearing this song and sort of playing it in my head when bullies would say cruel stuff. My parents didn't understand me and thought I would 'grow out of it', I don't blame them though it's the society we live in and they're accepting now :) I came out properly at 18 during the first lockdown and now I actually enjoy being alive, before I was very suicidal even from the age of 7 but now I'm so much happier and I'm so lucky to have accepting parents. I was also bullied for my ADHD, kids can be cruel man, so can adults though. I love Bo Burnham, he's great, honestly a lyrical genius in my opinion :)

    this song is a great thought experiment, it's a clear example of how simply saying a word doesn't mean you're saying it with intent to harm or with venom toward a person, in fact he's doing the exact opposite. He's lifting up the person that is on the receiving end of words, and I think just hearing it said out loud in a context that isn't malicious takes a lot of it's power away. This is definitely my favorite Bo rap. let's go!

    The thing about cutting is that the pain is so acute and present, that it brings all your focus to physical sensation (as opposed to emotional suffering)… I would actually consider it a form of meditation. That being said though, it’s a really shitty form of meditation that causes more harm than good. Cutters can be helped by replacing cutting behavior with other forms of meditation.

      I have alot to say on this but I don't want to come off as some suicidal psycho. So all I'll say is despite the whole "cutting yourself is bad and means you're suicidal", it's something that has legitimately helped me cope through the last 16 years of my life. The stigma on it is inherently bad, but alot of people don't realize the positives it brings to someone who doesn't react well to meds or forms of meditation like you guys say.

    • @EclipseBeatbox
      @EclipseBeatbox 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@nicholasneill7458 If you haven’t found relief from any forms of meditation, you must not be trying the right kinds. Western society only popularized meditation recently, and some people only know mindfulness practices.
      As someone with ADHD, I find trying to focus on the meditation practices that work for others almost impossible. There are practices for an ADHD mind that aren’t as well known, but have been much easier for me to do…
      No one in this comment thread said that cutting = suicidal, and I said that I recognize the positives that come from cutting as a means to cope with emotional suffering… it’s just a suboptimal solution is all

A lot of people only pay attention to the fact that he used slurs, rather than his clear support of the communities they are used against. What is really fascinating to me regarding this song - aside from the obvious genius of Bo Burnham - is how I hadn’t considered the offence this song could cause with such obvious slurs being thrown around, especially if taken out of context. I only recognised it when I saw your immediate and visceral reaction to his usage of said slurs. Which kind of drives Bo’s point home further. These slurs that hold such weight are still thrown around like this so often (I know I experienced my share of it growing up). In fact, so much so, that I had unconsciously become desensitised to the viciousness of it all. The fact that Bo can so eloquently navigate tricky territory and deliver it in such a digestible format is a true testament to his genius. Because being able to consider the damage that, in this case, the ‘bullies’ display to the ‘nerds’, opens up the ability to discuss it. In today’s society, we so often turn a blind eye to these things, because we’re programmed to be uncomfortable about it. So the fact that Bo can tackle these issues in such a head-on way, might just help a person going through it to talk about it too. Bo destigmatises things we should be able to discuss, and makes it accessible to his audience.

    Ive seen some people in the lgbtq community say that he should be cancled for using the f slur, but theres definitely way more gay people who love bo burnham, should he have said it? no. But, the songs are good man. Im a lesbian so i have some authority over saying this, i love bo burnham. This song especially means something to me and i love it still❤️

      I agree 100%. I'm Bisexual, and I also have ADHD and am seeking assessment for Autism. Having been called both the F and R slurs in my childhood, this song brings a huge amount of comfort to me. I agree that Bo shouldn't have used the slurs in the first place, that's just common sense. However, I love the way he did choose to use them, because the only time it's said as an attack is when a bully is calling Bo the F slur to his face; a literal depiction of what the whole song embodies. Every other instance it's either in reference to himself having been called the F slur by bullies in the past(the intro), or implying to the people who have also been targeted by that slur that he can empathize, at least to a certain extent.
      In my personal opinion, I feel like a majority of people in the lgbtq+ community that did say he should be canceled for this were looking at the song on a very surface level. Which again, I understand and agree that he isn't in a position to use the slurs and get off Scott free. But he's also said that he regrets a lot of his older songs because they were (Heavily paraphrased) "A cringy excuse for dark humour". He's apologized multiple times, publicly stated that he didn't stand by those older songs, and has made significant changes to how he structures his comedy. All in all, Bo is a musical genius who's had some rough spots in his learning journey. But he's just a normal guy, he makes mistakes and is man enough to admit to them.

      @@wiimote7305 If I come off as rude, I do sincerely apologize. I don't intend to, but this comment strikes me as odd. You admit that although it isn't solely used against Queer people, it's always used against people who seem stereotypically queer. Meaning, whoever uses said slur automatically assumes the other party is queer in some way, regardless of if they are.
      (Because it's the only way my brain can articulate how to describe this hypocrisy), Consider this. A group of black kids start picking on someone who isn't black. For the sake of this hypothetical comparison, these kids call the bullied kid the N word. This doesn't suddenly give the bullied kid the right to use that slur, just because it was used against them in some way.
      If me making this comparison is insensitive, again, I apologize sincerely. At the moment, I can't think of a better way to explain the reasoning without using a similar (Though, I'm aware they are very different) set of circumstances. If someone else can explain it better than me, I'll gladly remove this section if it causes any harm

    ‘Cancel culture’ as a concept bothers me immensely. It’s used so loosely it’s meaningless. Holding people accountable for their actions and taking actions that make a difference is what to do if you care. JK Rowling, for example, hasn’t been ‘canceled’. Most people know she’s an awful person, especially HP fans. Yet she lives comfortably on millions of dollars.
    All that being said for context, Bo getting ‘canceled’, if people try to, they won’t get close to succeeding. Not just because he’s wealthy but because of what he does. Bo’s not shy about his privileges and at the same time, Using slurs in a song can be done right and Bo proves it, because he has shown himself to be an ally countless times, including in this song. He’s an advocate and ally. So not only would ‘canceling’ him be a stupid thing to try, all it does is show me that you (meaning the people trying to cancel him) don’t understand or care about marginalized groups. You just hear the r or f word and go for it
    As someone else pointed out, unlike Dave Chapel, Bo doesn’t use marginalized groups as a punchline. He uses the slurs to grab attention, but not just for that. It’s because if you are or ever were considered a ‘nerd’ you were probably called the r or f word, or picked on for having acne or being fat or spastic. Bo was called the F word all the time and he isn’t even gay (not that it makes much of a difference, just goes to show that people love using some variation of ‘gay’ as an insult in tje broadest of contexts). And many of us have reclaimed the terms.
    We need to stop using the term ‘cancel’ in this way if we want to progress as a society.
    Besides, I suspect this is just a term American conservatives use as a way to further divide disenfranchised communities and those trying to support them, the latter of which is a theme Bo brings up constantly through his work.
    Same with the term ‘politically correct’. It’s such an empty term that does more to divide than unite.
    Feel free to edit and plagiarize this essay it’ll probably do more good than harm

    I don't know if it's just me, but after being bullied in school in the 90's and early 2000's, it feels like after I got out of school bullying has grown and become much more of a problem. I didn't have friends going through most of my bullying, so I remember being that one kid that would be sat in the back of class that no one wanted to work with. I had a fair number of group projects I did alone because people didn't want to work with me, and when it was a forced thing they just refused to actually do anything.
    Once I made it to High School I made a few friends, and it wasn't until senior year when something was finally done about it. One of my friends got sick of one of the bullies and chased one of them down one day and broke their arm. He and I were both sent home for the day, but nothing else ever came of it after we explained what happened. It didn't STOP the bullying, but it did cause a lot of them to chill out, and a few of them to stop.
    I personally think I have a thick enough skin that it didn't really bother me too much, and generally I was pretty happy to just do my own thing. There were times it would get to me, but It was also something where I didn't think I could do anything about it, so I just sucked it up. My parents didn't care too much, so it started to cause issues in other places. Like when I would go home, I wouldn't wanna do homework, because anything that reminded me of school just wasn't anything I wanted to think about, and my grades started to suffer for it. I sit here 16 years later struggling in college because much of my formative years where I would've been learning to better deal with homework, or how to better plan my time out for longer projects just...doesn't exist, because I never did it.

    I really enjoy the 2nd time around breakdowns. Bo's not cancellable, they keep tryin though. Heavy-subject comedic rap has really gained momentum the past decade or so. It kinda disappeared after Eminem grew out of it, I didn't realize how much it was needed till that niche repopulated. I've noticed a lot of my favorite artists today could be stand-up comedians...
    ....annnnd speaking of comedic rappers:
    😇Look how much effort I put in, just for you @Cliff Beats ! Here's a list of Samson tracks currently on his channel that are clean & non-political with a few annotated notes, ordered from newest to oldest. I still reccomend "Ball if I want to (remix) for all the double and triple entendres and I really would love your analysis on his rhyming patterns.
    ☆" _____"
    FTC
    BALL IF I WANT TO (Remix)
    Hot Shit (Megan Thee Stallion-Thot Shit Remix)
    Redman 80 Bar Challenge
    Maybe I'm just socially awkward
    Let me warm up, I just had covid
    A little new year motivation for ya
    Samson's opinion on censorship*
    My Number One **
    Samson with RUN DMC***
    Killa Flow (Michael Meyers rap)
    A Lot (Remix)
    If You Like It ****
    ☆ "46=13" is my favorite track, but it talks about current events like inflation, immigration, afganistan, and the presidency. I know you tend to steer clear of politically charged songs, but this... It's not hateful, or even divisive really.. It just is, and it has almost perfectly expressed my own emotional turmoil with everything.
    * Teeny bit graphic
    ** Personal least liked
    ***This video isnt on his channel, someone else has it posted, but it's Samson rapping in front of Run Dmc!
    **** Only adding because I like the lyrical content, didn't really like the song though.

    A good juxtaposition to this song is Bullies by Trevor Moore. I just posted about him in another comment and in one of you're newer videos but I'd really appreciate if you reacted to some of his songs, he is my hero and he died last year. Still not over it at all. Want to spread his songs. A good start would be Gary (his non comedy song), Kitty History, My Computer Just Became Self Aware, and What About Mouthwash. It will show his range. Also when you get to Kitster's Song you should do the music video.

    There's some of his songs that you have to go to other channels to find. Sunday School, Fetus, and one of my all-time favorite songs of his Oh My God which is the 2010 original version of From God's Perspective which is from what in 2012. I actually prefer that version. I'd highly recommend you react to that one in particular but there isn't a good audio quality version of it that has the full song you got to go with the live version where he's in that white T-shirt otherwise instead of the best lines of the song, the end line is something about not writing the ending of a song.

    Luckily this came out 8-9 years ago. Unfortunately if it came out today, people would try and cancel him without even realizing the meaning of the song. I find it tragically ironic that the people whom scream the loudest for everyone to be open-minded and understanding, are the first to lash out and cancel you if you have a different opinion. It seems everyone can express their own opinions, but only if it matches with everyone else's.

    I wonder what people think of this, and I'm not agreeing with one side or the other, just curious as to people's thoughts. But would this song be considered bullying in itself? I mean Bo is pretty harsh and belittles the types of people that it refers to. But is that ok because we get the context that Bo or people like Bo were the ones being bullied in the first place, so it's more in self-defense or calling them out? Or is it just bullying the bullies?
    Usually Bo's songs have something that makes you think, like hip hop being self centered and shallow, not caring about where they came from and instead buying gold rims, or Repeat Stuff and From God's Perspective, there are lines and verses that make you reflect on the subject. This song is a little different in that regard.

    • @jayrootly
      @jayrootly 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's okay being angry at people that bullied you, it's a feeling, and it's valid
      Yeah we shouldn't like literally bully the bullies, getting a revenge is not a good thing, people change, those bullies could've change, and overall we shouldn't continue the circle of bullying
      BUT
      It's okay, for example, to express that angry feeling in a song, as he did
      First of all - it could made him feeling better, and also other people in the same situation
      Second of all - he's calling them out but not specifically, he didn't call names, he just pointing out "that shit is bad, if you are bullying someone - think about it, it's awfull"
      Personally I am not angry anymore at people that bullied me in school, I don't want anything bad happening to them or something, but this song is just giving me this comforting feeling of not being alone in it

    She’s a heated topic for some, but I’m curious on what you think of Gabbie Hanna’s music, if you’ve heard any of it. Her style of song and book writing is influenced by Bo and Shel Silverstein. If you want to make a TH-camr music react series out of it, too, or just Gabbie. I’m just interested in Cliff’s thoughts, anyone else can save their breath. We all have our opinions, just don’t need to say it all the time

    That first part he said I have 3 friends not rims. So judge the exterior because it’s shity on the inside. I’m guessing he was saying to the bullies judge the vehicle because they’re assholes and he knows what they think about the group of buddies. I didn’t hear rims and I know he said judge the outside because it’s shitty on the inside so I’m thinking I had it.
