  • This man is a genius. You can tell he genuinely cares for people and wants to please others but you can also tell that he is dealing with mental health issues. I suffer from similar mental health issues and can see it through his performance but he is amazing. A true artist ahead of his time.

The thing that made him special, to me, was that he kept bringing up thoughts and topics that I was thinking too. Not that I'm anywhere near creative enough to put it into an entertaining song, but those were the kinds of existential thoughts and ideas that I and a lot of my friends were having. There are a huge amount of people in the world that feel the same way Bo is feeling, and it's validating to have creators giving a voice to all of that.

Bo doesn't repeat himself often (repeat stuff literally makes fun of the laziness of writing that way) but he repeats, "my love is the type of thing you have to earn and when you earn it, you won't need it".
There's a lot in this song, but that line honestly sums up the "perspective" of this song.

My mother has solved death twice already. Now is is cancer in the gut. That is a. problem that nobody can solve.
I as a earth scientist is of course useless being confronted with the scientific problem of what life is or the problem of why cells in our bodies turn cancerious. I can totally explain to my mother how a ct tomography works.
But the docs of intensive care can not really tell me how "a cancer works. And that is similar to how mental health worls. Bilology does not fit the regime of science. We on the physical side of stuff - we can predict well how many gigatons of ice that will get lost due to global warming. That is "simple". Biology - like me mum - I understand that we in science get that we can do awesome stuff with gene profiling and shit - yet I am reduced to say - we can predict global climate, but science can not predict if my mum survive next week.
Earth is heaven for a dude that respect my own moter's idea that of a god. HEAVEN is her hanging around for a few more years, so that her grandchildren can grow old enough to truly remember how a lovely human my mother is.

Man, that second to last line is perhaps the most insightful thing I've ever heard in relation to morality and humanity's destructive tendencies because it knocks down authority, provides the same comfort "Being saved" does, and it promotes connection to our humanity..."My love's the kind of thing that you have to earn, but when you earn it, you won't need it." In essence, a paraphrasing of the golden rule IMHO, "Why do you seek outside approval of your goodness, just treat others as you would want to be treated and you can be confident that any "God" would be pleased anyway."

This may have already been brought to your attention Cliff, but while it was widely believed when the Kanye Rant song came out that the Pringles and Chipotle parts were believed to be metaphors, me being one of those people, Bo has since come out and stated that they weren't actually meant to be metaphors. They really were just there to be funny parts of the song. While this does take a little bit of the substance away from the song, it's still a great song, and the second half of it still has great meaning and feelings behind it. Personally I like to think that Bo chose those lines subconsciously, and the metaphors were there, but unrealized. : )

    • @jeremybr2020
      @jeremybr2020 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@THEANSWER A small correction first, it's not what is the metaphor, but what I thought the metaphor was. Just making sure I clarify that. If memory serves, what I thought when I first heard the song, was that the Pringles that he couldn't fit his hand into was a metaphor of how Bo didn't quite fit in the Hollywood and entertainment industry. Basically at first he couldn't quite get to level he wanted, but then when he did, it came too fast and it was just too overwhelming and lacked substance. Just like when he tilts the Pringles can and it goes pouring all over his face. Essentially the Chipotle part falls under a similar vein as the Pringles did. But I won't bore you with that one.

The more I hear of these older Bo songs, the more I'm reminded of Tim Minchin. It wouldn't surprise me if Tim was an influence on Bo.
If you enjoy the combination of catchy piano, comedic lyrics punctuated with deep subjects, I'd HIGHLY recommend checking out Tim. Some songs are downright silly, and some are profound. Whether or not you decide to react to them or not, you would really appreciate his budding lyrical talent on some of his earliest stuff, like My Whole Family, New Math, 3.14 Apple Pi, Bo Yo, Words, Words, Words - all very good writing, even if the subject matter is very white teenage boy humor, which he has addressed many times, even singing about it in Problematic.
Ok - still enjoying these, and seeing you enjoy them adds to the enjoyment, bc Bo Burnham is, literally and metaphorically, a real, clever character that is beloved by his ever growing fan base; and having won 3 of the 5 Creative Emmy's he was up for and up for a fourth tonight, I am sure that base will be growing!
Thank you for covering him and helping that to happen! 💖

Hey, man, just wanted to drop some helpful tips about Bo. I'm terms of what you'd need to watch to be "familiar" with Bo, all you really need to see is the first three comedy specials before Inside: Words Words Words (his first comedy special circa 2010, lots of allegories and wordplay), What (The same special this song is from, which features more social commentary and criticism about harmful cultural practices, circa 2013) and Make Happy (his introspective comedy special that explores the parasocial/self-destructive relationship between a comedian or content creator and their audience, circa 2016). A lot of Bo's content is specifically written and produced to try making the audience think about larger and more nebulous concepts and their place in them, as well as encouraging them to question social norms for various economies of industry. Bo's both thought provoking and critical, yet humorous, all at the same time.
As far as reactable content goes, I recommend the following songs: "Words Words Words", "Oh Bo", "What's Funny", Ironic", "Eff"( the rant from WWW), "Art Is Dead", "Sad", "Left Brain, Right Brain", "#Deep", "We Think We Know You", "Repeat Stuff", "Nerds", "Channel 5", "Hell of A Ride", "Straight White Male", "Pandering", "Kill Yourself", and "Are You Happy". These are definitely his best works. Each one has something different to note and critique while still being (subjectively) hilarious. Please check these out. It doesn't have to be in order, of course. Piecemeal is fine when and as you find a video to react to, just stop long as you look further into the world of Bo Burnham. :)

Im hoping to get you to react to this so I'm going to copy paste it into as many videos as possible, as well as just enjoying your content.
I've dealt with anxiety for as long as I can remember, I grew up in a very large, very Christian family and I never knew why I always felt like this, I think I can explain that anxiety is the feeling of thinking about the way you think about thinking. Psychologists speak of different types of consciousness as layers of experience. On one level you experience the world by way of reflection, as you grow older society teaches you to think about your perspective in relation to others and this brings about another level of consciousness that thinks about the first level. This is a abstractive way to see your experience but I think that the way out of this conundrum is only thinking when you need to and to find and enjoy breaks between those states. If you only think about your thoughts you can't truly experience new thoughts because the new experience will reflect the perspective of the old state of mind. I hope this makes some kind of sense to anyone reading this. Please correct me if it seems I'm wrong.

This is crystal clear to me. My understanding of this comes from a channel called Jreg, specifically his videos on Irony, Post-Irony, Meta-Irony, and the further deeper layers of Irony.
I've coined a new term for this recently too. Quantum Modernism. There isn't a fixed definition yet, so you are just gonna have to fuck around and find out how it works.
