Improper flooring installation in a RV. This is why we don't use this type of flooring!

  • The things we see when working on RVs, this coach had the wrong type of flooring installed and was even installed improperly. This unit is getting sold by a local dealership and they will be taking the flooring out and installing new carpet.

I respectfully disagree. Descent quality vinyl plank can be used, in fact makes a somewhat waterproof and easy to clean surface for high foot traffic. However this video does show exactly how to not install it.

Right, where did this guy come up with this? I mean we're both commenting on a 2 year old video but the point remains valid all the same 😂there's literally hundreds, if not thousands of videos right beside this one that show people successfully installing LVP in all types of campers/motorhomes/RVs/van builds

You can totally use planks!! Just put in expansion joints!! Same as ina house. This dude is not a tradesman.

You can use LVP all day in an RV. That floor is popping because of the way they laid it out. Think about it:
You've got 4 planks meeting at every intersection of that floor. So there are 4 ways for that floor to fail X however may of those individual convergence points are (there's a lot but lets just say 100). All it takes is one of those corners, on any of those points to chip, break, pop, or crack, and the whole thing fails.
The proper way to install LVP, you would stagger those planks.
First and foremost your subfloor must be in relatively decent shape. Make sure it is clean, dry, and flat. Any significant damage to it or uneven sections will make it difficult if not impossible for this floor to work. It has to lay ABSOLUTELY FLAT. Otherwise those planks won't click together properly. Install a decent underlayment if you want. I like the felt/fabric based underlayments like QuietWalk. Even if your LVP has a pad attached to the underside I'd still use it ideally.
    1) Run the first course of planks and then make your cut at the termination point at the wall, then,
    2) use that plank (if it is at least 6" in length) to begin your next course.
    3) Repeat this method and you will have a perfect pattern of joints/seams running diagonally across that floor.
    4) It will also NOT touch the walls at any point. Its a floating floor, and that is why it will be fine when it expands and contracts.
    5) Use plastic spacers or wooden shims or anything really, approx 1/8" in size, around your entire perimeter in between the LVP and the walls.
    6) Undercut existing trim on walls, doors, etc. with a multitool if you don't want to replace all of it.
    7) Then finish with quarter round, or baseboards, or whatever trim you prefer to hide your perimeter expansion joint and finalize the install.
Picture a huge, heavy area rug, but this rug is made entirely of thick vinyl planks with wood grained patterns printed on it laying in your RV...thats essentially what you're building when you install an LVP floor. If properly installed, it will be beautiful, durable, scratch resistant, and waterproof; and it will last for 20-30 years if properly cared for. This goes for any setting and application whether it be an RV, or a house. Commercial high-traffic LVP is a bit thicker but still uses the same installation process. I've done dozens of these. Not one of my floors has failed.

Unfortunately I didn't think you ever explained what the issue is. Other than not to put a pergo laminate flooring in an RV. If you didn't want carpet, what type of flooring would you suggest? Thanks!

The only way to fix a rotted camper floor correctly is to remove every floor mounted wall and cabinet and replace the floor. This was the first project I did on my 1990 e250 campervan. I used 3mm exterior grade wood sheathing for the subfloor, coated with exterior zinser shellac based primer, sanded to level, applied another coat of zinser, sanded lightly, then glued down raised coin vinyl sheet flooring. Then before the cabinets and walls were installed I applied butyl caulk to the outside diameter of the floor where it met the steel walls in the event a leak or spill occurred it could not get between the vans metal floor bed and subfloor. Then threadhholds were installed at the doors. I then installed carpetingIt has held up great and expect it to last.

Dude none of those problems had anything to do with the flooring. If the flooring was down properly and the subfloor rot issues where fixed the flooring may have been fine.
    Be honest to many variables.

Hi, we have a 2002 citation supreme and want to tear up the carpet and put done vinyl flooring can you recommend what we should look for? Thanks

Well it doesnt look like OP is sharing any insight. I have the same issue buf i assumed it was from moisture causing the flloor to expand since i can also feel soft areas under the flooring.

I'm planning on replacing my RV floor with peel and stick vinyl planks is this a good replacement flooring .. has the original flooring was a one-piece vinyl sheet which has cracked majorly in several places.. and do I need to leave space around the edges or can I go right up to the walls

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. You have any tips/tricks? Did you put down primer before the flooring? How about any additional adhesive?

I am rebuilding a vintage canned ham and planning to use peel and stick vinyl 12" tiles. I am taking out the whole floor and putting in a new one. There is a pretreat that you spread on the wood first then let it dry and apply the tiles. Does this sound like it will work? Thanks.

My best suggestion is to read the manufacturer's installation instructions and see what they say. In my opinion most peel-and-stick products (wallpaper, back splash tile, flooring, etc.) Do not last in RV installs, the other thing to remember is unless you're using the unit full time the temperatures you will see in a trailer can be well over 110 degrees which will cause most adhesives to fail.

A shit show of a flooring job. Can definitely install LVP. Worst case use a glue down. Absolutely terrible job and that’s why it failed

What is a good vinyl for an rev?

    • @uniquecustomizations2222

We mainly installed rolled vinyl. Basically the cut to length and glued down flooring you can get instock at the big box hardware stores.

    Country Coach?! What year?
Ok, Country Coach is/ was owned by Prevost Mortorcoach. Prevost is the RR equivalent.
    Rockstar upper echelon.
Either this was a replacement by chumps OR in 2009 the economic downturn forced layoffs & QC corners were cut.
    6” staggering is a must.

This isn't a helpful video at all, it doesn't show anything about correctly flooring a camper, it's just an exposé of a really.....really....bad attempt to floor an RV.

Well this makes me feel better and doesn’t. I bought a camper with these “nice floors” now there’s gaps all in them but at least I know it’s not just me and the wall even looks like the one you showed so there was even water damage to them, great 🙄

That HAS TO BE the WORST flooring installation I've ever seen!!! Looks like a 6 year old did it!
