Is Porsche's Cheapest GT Car Just a Parts-Bin Special?

  • The 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 gets some complaints. Its gearing is too tall. It should have gotten the GT3 motor. It's not a "true" GT car. But this isn't some parts-bin wannabe. It's easily one of the best sports cars Porsche ever made, in part because it's the only GT car you can still buy for under $100K.

    I’ve had a GT3 and a GT4 on the track, and there’s no question I would pick the GT4 for my own car. It may give away a bit in raw speed but the chassis dynamics in the GT4 are really something special.

      I think of the Germans being so clinical and precise, it's amazing to me how that translates to such an emotional driving experience.

    I had an almost identical car for 7 years since new, and it was great, with the exception of it having carbon buckets and Cup 2 tires. Also did the RSS adjustable rear toe links and front thrust arm bushings, and then went 2.5 degrees front and 2 degrees rear camber. So much fun. Was right on the cusp of doing the transmission change to shorter 2-5 gears when I good friend decided to sell his 2K mile 991.2 GT3 with pdk, buckets and PCCB’s, and that engine & transmission combo is just soo good that I had to make the change. The original plan was a GT4RS that I put a deposit down on, but not with the obscene dealer markup being charged on those

      I've had the pleasure of driving the same car on Cup 2 tires now and it's amazing how much track tires change the character of the car in terms of handling. Such a joy. I honestly didn't notice the gearing being an issue on the track but I've never driven one of these on the street. What made you so eager to consider the gearing change? I assume that's a pretty pricey undertaking?
      I've driven the 991.2 GT3 RS a fair bit now and it's an unbelievable car. Congrats! I'd love to try a GT4 RS at some point...

    Great video. Own a 981 GT4, had a 16 Cayman and several other 911's. Parts bin = GTS models. GT4 is not a Cayman, it's just a platform, the car is unique in it's own right. Too many differences to Cayman to label it just that but it's gotta have a name and it looks like a Cayman so there ya go. Not sure on the production numbers, I've looked at them all too...just seems much, much easier to find GT3's everywhere vs GT4's. Just don't see them that often.

    Very smooth on the track bud, well done. I was kind of hoping to see you try and chase it down in your C6 Z06 but perhaps next time. That GT4 is something special as I had one keep up with me in my 17 ZL1 Camaro around Willow Springs, we traded spots a few times and ended up posting similar laptimes which is crazy since I had double the power he did. Got a sub from me for this one, well put together vid bud. Thanks for posting.

    Great vid man. The gearing chatter is interesting. Having driven a range of Porsches, I can say this that is consistent and sometimes even worse in the 911. Never thought it was an issue in the GT4 especially since it has a nice power band from 4k up.

      The gear ‘rattle’ is predominant with lightweight single mass flywheels. I had a AASCO LWF installed and loved the quick revs.

  • @metzgerf16
    @metzgerf16 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree with Hunter. There's nothing wrong with 'parts bin' when it's a damn good parts bin. Didn't see any issues with gearing when you were driving.
    A friend of mine pushed the Cayman pretty hard when I was car shopping, and I do really want a Porsche. But it's hard to beat the GM options for the money.

    • @JoshVanVeld
      @JoshVanVeld  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm sure budget is the top consideration for 95% of sports car shoppers and it's hard to beat a Chevy in that regard, especially if most of your driving will be on the street. I'm curious where my new C6Z is going to be with some focused mods.
      Gotta be honest, I'm seriously considering selling the Turbo, getting a 981 GT4 as my "nice" occasional track use car, and using the leftover cash to turn the Z into a dedicated time-attack project. Maybe I'll come to my senses but I can't stop thinking about that GT4!! I think I need to try a 996 GT3 before I make any decisions.

    @Josh Van Veld’s Racing Mind cool vid! Don’t know much about the cayman’s, learned more about them from your vid and from my AX last weekend. My instructor races one. While watching your racing lines I noticed the track markers by the edge of the track. I feel they’d be really helpful for those learning that track. Don’t think most track have markers like that.

    • @JoshVanVeld
      @JoshVanVeld  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! They are helpful although you don’t want to rely on the placement too much because it might not be the ideal line and it can change from car to car.
