What separate a good and bad BEV is the heat management. Tesla Supermanifold cooling/ Octovalve systems is superior than any BEV available in the market. Nothing is even close. The reliability is proven very long in all Tesla models compared to other brands.
BYD major problems. th-cam.com/video/qKa8mVOe5so/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kReH10032DDKP148
BYD is an easy choice:
- instrument panel
- HUD
- Apple CarPlay
- Android Auto
- proper indicator stalks
- parking sensors
- more thigh support in every seat
- cheaper
- more space in the back
- more stylish
- longer warranty (at least here in Finland
- can charge it to 100% without any problems
- V2L
Is good that BYD remove the "Build Your Dreams" tag at the rear. They even removed the BYD tag here at the middle which is available in some markets. Rear look so much cleaner.

Hey viewer from Australia here! Ordered my Seal last night and watched this great review video! Can't wait to drive my own seal!
Thanks for tuning in !
How much did you pay including on roads?
Hope for your sake it’s not too late to cancel that order; you really should do your due diligence on what BYD actually is
@@dtkl79 In Victoria, it is 52684 for me after on road cost.
@@Mehffort Why is that? I am all ears.
They just announced the pricing for this in Australia and it undercuts the Model 3 by $12,000! Incredible value given Thomas thinks it's still worth it if it was priced a little higher even.
Well it's a little misleading, yes there is a cheaper version that is $50k but that's a lower spec, you can't get that version in Europe, the next model up, the Premium which is $59k is closest in spec to the RWD base model Tesla at $62k. The Seal performance at $69k sits between what would have been the old M3 Performance (not available in highland spec) and Long Range which is now $72k.
It's definitely worth considering for a potential model 3 buyer, it will be interesting to see if BYD have fixed their buggy software which was the Achilles heel along with max 7kw AC charging (vs 11-22kw for Tesla depending on spec) and Supercharger access of the otherwise pretty good Atto 3.
Is not even on the same spec.... like comparing apple to nut
Good for a fire
@@TB-up4xithere not a lot different between the standard and midrange model for most buyers, but a A$49k starting price before subsidies and free rego for a car like this is amazing. More choice is better, if someone wants to get the $60k midrange model they absolutely can but I see more people finding value and what feels like 95% of the same car in the standard model. Hell a Camry SL Hybrid with half the features costs well over $50k now.
In Thailand it's 1.6 million THB for top model
I think this one is substantially better looking than a Tesla Model 3, and better equipped. Impressive.

Very good review. I saw a Seal when I was recently in China. It looks even better in real life than on video. Somehow they got the styling exactly right, it's much better looking than the Tesla. I hope they fix the low-speed sound issue, you're not the only one to complain about that. Should be doable via software.

I live in Thailand and just bought a Tesla Model 3. 3 weeks later BYD launched the Seal 😂😂😂 This is a car i wouldve seriously considered.
Do you think seal is the best for you?
One of the best car reviews I've ever seen. Very well done.
Thomas is great. He is not biased I like him 😊

Thanks for a very fair and informative review. Well done. I've test driven the Tesla Model 3 and didn't particularly like the handling / overall feeling. The Seal is now on my list. Thanks again.
thanks keep tuning in !
Are you comparing this new car with the old Tesla Model 3?
Not a fair comparison IMO.
I’ve driven the model 3 and it’s superb, especially the smoothness of the one-pedal driving. The ride is firm but perhaps improved along with NVH in the Highland
I m comparing it to the facelift
So you have driven the new Highland version@@autogefuehl- diden't know about that? Any footage of that soon?
Nice, informative and helpful review! Had atto3 for half a year, loved that, will def. get this one over the M3/Y, especially with family onboard.
This is still the best review even with the flood of the more recent ones. Very concise and factual.
The white seal 2023 version really stunning, the steering wheel, the taillamp is beautiful; but I like those legs on passenger seat more 😄

Thomas, your reviews are the best. Keep up the great work.
Impressive, your truly incredible Thomas, but it was great to have them show you the car at over one hundred and ninety per hour, and what an assessment huh.🚗
US$36500 in Australia undercutting Tesla M3 by more than 20%. Lots of Sales domination at this price.
That would be 21,946.65 EUR. Not bad
It's about 48k in ££, are we brits getting screwed on this? Cause this is a pretty cool car.
Price of Seal is going to be released in Australia next week, very excited to have a test drive then
There is a Seal parking under my flat, it's gorgeous and stylish! I will certainly consider one next year when I move to Coventry.
Amazing review, one of the best reviews on the market of this car with good detail showing what people really want to know

Thanks for the great objective review thomas. This car is really impressive to earn such high marks from you
Is this Chinese?
Thanks Thomas! This review has sold me, I'm ordering one early 2024!

BYD may be following the 1988/1989 180kmh Japanese "gentleman's agreement" limit- so when you see 180kmh top speed on a car it often means the real top speed is higher but they're aligning to the Japanese 'standard' so they can sell cars there/fit in to the Japanese standard
Thomas I am watching whilst recovering from major surgery i have been ordered no heavy weights/movements etc. I was not expecting the Seal impression you made me laugh out loud..ouch. Great review keep up the good work.
hehe =) all the best to you and good recovery !
Thomas always has more lenient words for new car reviews, but also not shy to point out the shortfalls in certain corners.
I ordered the White RWD version. Delivering end November! Excited :)
Congrats. I too am considering a white RWD. The biggest concern however is the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).
I don't want the car constantly beeping at me.
Fuse number F15 in the fuses under the bonnet is for ADAS. It would be interesting to see if the car would run without errors if this fuse were removed and also if any useful features would be missing.
Congratulations and envy!!
@@mad4tar77 You can turn all of it off from the screen. That's the nice thing. Just that you have to keep doing it every time you start the car.
@@graffitijungle2072 Thank you! Truly fortunate to be able to buy one.
@DS87 nothing nice about having to go through multiple menus every single time you switch the car on. Appalling design, should be via shortcut buttons that are easily accessible.

Another excellent, detailed and objective review Thomas - thank you! I can't wait to take a really good look and test drive the Seal when it launches in the UK in November. I think this is best looking saloon EV on the market today. I do think the Tesla model 3 Highland design has been improved but still not as good looking as the Seal. I also really like the metallic white on your review vehicle.
Thanks m8!
I agree, the seal looks absolutely stunning in person. The model 3 was never a pretty car to start with, they can only improve so much without a complete design overhaul.
其实还可以选择平行进口的阿维塔12,zeekr001,NIO ET5都很好看的。
Looks like a handsome alternative to the model 3 for the folks who prefer a traditional EV
I think you mean more traditional ICE car styling in an EV package.
@@TB-up4xi yup that’s correct
If performance is close to Tesla, it is much better car. I do not like my Tesla model3 except it’s EV function. If I have other choice at same price , I wouldn’t buy Tesla, build quality is too bad.
Is this Chinese?
Didn't realize EV have been long around enough to be traditional
Some features you missed, BYD Seal and other models have V2L which Tesla do not offer, they prefer you spend $15k on a powerwall 😮 :) LFP batteries can be charged and discharged regularly 0-100% with no battery degradation.
So you don’t need a powerwall at home?
Unfortunately we installed our power wall before we brought our BYD atto. Home battery and solar is a difficult subject as legislation is not consistent around the world. In Australia, a home battery such as a PW does offer one advantage over a EV with V2L. A home battery enables solar to continue to provide power during a mains grid outage. However, but this can be achieved with a cheaper smaller battery than a Tesla PW if one has a whopping EV battery on hand. @@jorgesilva5685
All batteries degrade, LFP degrade slower when charging 0-100%.
Model 3/Y are LFP battery. Been that for years now. All battery degrades.
@@lks3537 Only base models.
Would be interesting to hear your take on this vs the Zeekr 001 and the updated Polestar 2.
I ordered a Seal and will receive it in a week !😊
My friend. Good news. When receive it please remove Fuse number 15 under the bonnet as a test for us. Fuse 15 is the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) Fuse.
Tell us if all the annoying ADAS systems are switched off after removing the Fuse and if you get any error messages whilst the Fuse is removed.
@@mad4tar77would love to know ass well that wine at low speeds I couldn’t bare it. If it could be turned off I’m in
@@lifeliver9000 you can remove a fuse to stop that awful whine. It's a terrible car.
@@mad4tar77 car looks amazing and performance is a knock out. Only issue would be that wine and lane alarm. If I could permanently remove I will buy one- teslas all look the same already aging in style. In NZ the seal is way cheaper for the same if not better car. Lots of bang for the buck
@lifeliver9000 I've driven 2 of them. One with a salesman present for a 30 minute test drive, and the next day without a salesman for 60minutes.
This is a great top trumps car, I.e. on paper it has all the spec. In reality, it's a really poor package. The steering is absolutely terrible, too heavy in any mode, too artificially quick to mimic sportiness and just makes it irritating to drive, the ride quality is substandard, when driving it hard (the 530hp car) the throttle response isn't calibrated correctly, when you floor it there's a pause before the power arrives and a when you lift off whilst at full throttle it takes a moment longer than it should to react. The menu systems are laughably bad, 7 presses on the screen required to turn off the speed limit alert system, similar for lane keep. You can't turn on Cruise control without the lane keeping coming on automatically. The lane keeping beeps like no other car I've test driven (and I've tested many). Both cars in the dealership had faults, on one car the electric seat height adjustment had failed and on the other it was prompted error messages about a reversing system error. The seats are soft initially, but once sat it for a longer period they are too hard underneath, low quality. Doing simple things like turning on a seat heater requires trawling through sub menus. I could go on and on... People will naively buy because they are really cheap for the spec provided, and they'll end up hating the overall package.
I might have missed it but what are the headlights like? Any active shadowing?
Note that contrary to the first info and contrary to how they sold the vehicle to customers, the BYD Seal does come with animal skin leather. Customers bought the vehicle expecting animal free leatherette while BYD did not offer consistent information.
Now I know, it is the right choice.
Last time as you introduced the Skoda Kodiaq it was, till now, the best car for me and know I decided to buy the BYD Seal. 😅😊

I hear no way near 320mi in real life, more like 200 mi
@@jieli4589 This is not a Vinfast. There is no way the 82 kWh version of the Seal get anything like 200 mile range. You may be thinking of the smaller battery version available in China, which has a 60 kWh pack.
The trunk and frunk are a lot smaller than Model 3.
Hi Thomas and thanks for the video. I currently have a 2022 propulsion Model 3. I'd like something quicker like the AWD Highland Model 3 but this AWD BYD Seals is nice too.
Over the Model 3, I like the fact it's a performance version but with the convenience of the LFP battery. I also like the more conventionnal approach with stalks, HUD, blind spot indicator in the mirror etc. The suspension and overall comfort seems better too. I don't like the fact that there's an on/off button for the car (I constantly forgot to turn it off in my wife's Kona). Overall, coming from a Tesla, it looks like a clusterf**k of buttons BTW. Boot space is ridiculous compared to the Model 3 but I might not need too much either. Charging port is on the wrong side for current superchargers too.
I don't know, could you help me make up my mind please?
What's the sound system like BTW?

How is the beeping/warnings from the ADAS system. Did you do a test drive without disabling them ?

Thanks 🙏 Seal U review soon!
Hi Thomas, thank you for the review. I had the impression that it sounded quite noisy inside while you were driving on the Autobahn or was it a mic issue?
it loooks fantastic both in and out!!!
In terms of subsidies. The price in EU is actually twice as much as that in China for the same model. It is interesting to ask who collects that extra 100%. And by knowing the fact that someone else is taking great advantage from it, the Chinese government is still willing to pay subsidies on it.
same for the VW ID, 40k in Germany, 20k in CHina
Customs Duty and taxes in the EU add a lot and the EU is investigating Chinese automakers for those subsidies. If they were to really undercut European brands on price, the EU would stick extra tariffs on Chinese cars.
As a consumer, I would love foreign countries to subsidize ALL my purchases instead of our own government taxing us. With the money subsidized by foreign countries, I can spend it locally and buy more food or luxury, a win-win for me.
Do you see navigation turns instrumen panel or hud. When using google maps?
Hi ,Thomas new BYD it's very cool!
Seal I would like you to learn more unknown electric cars so I can know them too and I like them a lot!
What a nice car ! impressive
I wonder how it will compare to the Model 3 Highland driving wise. Maybe it would be interesting to do a comparison.
Compare it to Ioniq, Mercedes, BMW, MG, Nio, VW, KiA as well.
I would love if revievers of e-cars would have a bit of focus on the software in the cars. Like for example: If i want to do a long drive, like a vacation in my car as us europeans tend to do al lot, how is it to plan charging stations with the software? Does it do it by itself, or is it gonna be a lot of planning for the driver? And how well is the car at estimating its state of charge - the amount of range left, when you arrive at the chosen charging station? Is it over-estimating it's own range, or can you rely on the numbers?
coming to DE w/o combi version?
The 'low speed' noise is really really annoying, they definitely have some issues to fix for the European market

Hope BYD will bring an estate version of the Seal as well to Europe
For whatever reason BYD doesn't make a pure estate/wagon even though they now make so many different types of cars. The closest thing they have to an estate is the Denza N7, which is still more of a squashed crossover than a true estate. Although you will be able to get the Zeekr 001 wagon in Europe, as well as the beautiful Nio ET5 Touring, but both are more costly.
@@tren133so far BYD concenrated on the chinese marked, where estates are not popular, so there was no reason to build an estate. Even though SUVs get more popular in Europe, estates are still more popular in central europe than saloons

There is a prototype of byd han estate. It looks really good. Hope they release it.
How does this compare to NIO's ET5? I believe ET5 is priced higher and targeted the premium segment, but does it worth the premium price compare to Seal?
Byd Seals sell for 190,000 to 280,000 yuan here. The NIO et5 sells for 300,000 to 400,000 yuan in China. As a Chinese, I provide you with reference on the official websites of the two companies.
@@152dade3 I would like to buy BYD Seal, how is it going in china ? is there any complaints on BYD seal ?
@@MHWibi Due to the fierce competition in China's electric vehicle market and the Chinese people's low requirements for sports, Seal's sales are not very good. Meanwhile, the "Seal U"suv with a similar price and soft suspension has been selling well. It mostly depends on your preferences. It is well known that the Chinese have a high demand for rear passenger space, while the Europeans have a high demand for trunk space. To Europeans, this could be a weakness for "seal". Other than that, I think both the "Seal" and the "Seal U" suv are fairly balanced products.
@@152dade3 I am planning to buy BYD Seal. I read an article from UK saying that when the car is passing rough surface road the driver can feel quite strong vibration on the steering wheel. Is that really the case, please kindly share your experience on this matter.
Excellent review, as always.
highly appreciated as always!
How deep was the rear sub trunk, important!!
Which lighter colour would look good on the car? White or arctic blue?
Love the rear headlights! Very nice.
Another brilliant car review, Thomas. You examine every detail of the vehicle with German precision. Some really nice EV cars from China are coming to Europe. This one look promising, but my favorite so far is Nio ET5 touring. I hope EU won’t panic because of the European car industry lumping behind Chinese brands and Tesla regarding electrification and increase import taxes to some ridiculous levels …
Anyway, I believe you should include Lea more in future videos. She’s doing fine job filming and screaming during acceleration (you should make it official girl-in-a-passenger-seat-acceleration-test). Maybe Lea’s legroom test would also be a nice addition in your videos, haha 😊 Stay awesome.
Well so far, the EU is considering putting tariffs on subsidised EVs produced in China, thereby levelling the playing field. If you had to choose based on what you've seen so far between a Model 3 variant, a BYD or NIO equivalent, (taking prices and specs into account) what would you currently sit it? The reason i'm asking is because you sound like someone who's looked into all 3. Thanks.
@@sebastianorye2702 I already have my dream car: Tesla Model 3 Standard Range. Made in China 😂 As a whole package it beats all of them. Great car overall, supercharger network across Europe. Really painless road trips, software updates with new features etc. And price is really good for SR in our country. With all ICE cars prices increasing, Model 3 SR is very good choice.
which color the best for byd seal, Aurora White or Atlantis Grey ?
Love the horror movie sound effect xD
Subjective of course, but while I like the exterior quite a bit I find the interior tacky (the screens look like someone bought a Model 3 and then went nuts buying accessories on AliExpress 🤢). Seats look nice but the swooping lines of the dash and doors aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. The software looks almost offensive to the eye - if Tesla is the iPhone of EV world, then BYD are like one of the many Android phones out there with some awful UI skin. Great battery and drive train though, wish Tesla offered a large capacity LFP battery in AWD models. NIO seem to do a better job aesthetically from where I’m standing. Again, totally subjective.
In my personal experience, when you actually sit in 3 and Seal, your touch will tell you the answer
@@graffitijungle2072 Have only seen the Atto in the flesh. Own a MYLR and like it in terms of value proposition and quality. Cross shopped various EV offerings, the only ones that came close were the Kia/Hyundai offerings in terms of overall package. Had initially ordered BMW iX3, but reconsidered as soon as Tesla prices dropped. The practicality and driving characteristics are rather important to me, but the interior aesthetics are also very high up there as I do well over average mileage (~5k km/month). I have to enjoy the cabin as a place to be, and BYD just doesn’t do it. Again very subjective, others may hate Tesla interior for its minimalism 🤷♂️
At the end of the day any of the available cars in their respective segments will find buyers. Just depends what an individual is looking for.
I wish you had tested Android Auto and Apple Carplay in the vertical screen position. That would have been super interesting :-)
it doesn't rotate
@@corlaine 😮
I have seen other reviews where the screen auto-rotates back to landscape position when in Carplay or Android Auto mode
@@raymonddsouza8948 the screen rotates (hardware), the carplay/AA interface, no
It does rotate but AA is not working in portrait mode.
It just entered Indonesia yesterday and I'm really considering to get one. But I still have some doubts on long term reliability because I an planning to keep it for at least 5 years.. Any experience with owning a BYD?
BYD is used as Taxi in Shenzhen China. If reliability is bad, taxi drivers won't survive.
Is Apple CarPlay wireless ?
I ordered my Seal with the RWD version in Atlantis Grey - It will be delivered in december 👍
I just hope I wont regret selling my Audi Q4 40 e-tron over this one 😅
i don't see why your should be disappointed at all...... everything mentioned mostly on software tweeks and that's the easiest thing to change and correct.
@@fatdoi003 The Audi Q4 was really comfortable to drive, but the software was not that impressive tbh.
So hopefully this will be a lot better once it's released here in the EU.
I should be able to testdrive it within the next few weeks at the dealer. Worst case I can cancel my order 👍
But it looks solid in terms of quality and materials compared to Tesla or my Q4 for that matter 😅
The assistance systems are atrocious, even with software upgrades to fix the blatant bug, they are awful.
Be prepared, there are a number of them that will need to be turned off everytime you turn the car on, or otherwise be prepared to get beeped at alot by the car.
Everything else looks amazing though. Fuse 15 under the bonnet is for ADAS, if that just happened to get accidently on purpose removed, the car could be a nice option of buy 😉
comment section full of chinese influencers with their fake stories and people don't even realize it...
price?
Accually, this car is not popular in China, because most Chinese buy sedans for daily home use, so they care about room and comfort rather than driving experience. Hope it will sells well in Europe.
It’s already outperforming tesla this year.
Seems an amazing technical car. For me ( and tall sons) the rear seats are too low to the cabin floor unfortunately. They'll stuggle for headroom and having knees so high compared to seat. If it were just me for the driver's seat though...I'd be very keen on this one.
I read a lot of reviews about the jerky safety systems with constant annoying beeps. What are your findings?
Not if you deactivate them, only possibility at this moment. But you have to deactivate them each time. Still yes, all assistance systems are not on a state of publishing at this moment
BYD is for sure going to ruffle some Tesla "feathers" with introduction of the Seal which looks like a worthy competitor! Also, to see the BYD Tang landing in Europe will most probably result in many Cybertruck orders being cancelled. in fact, I'd be surprised if we ever get to see the Cybertruck in Europe!
Did you just assume that Cybertruck and BYD Tang share the same audience? 🤦
If the cyber truck was sold in the eu. It would be classified as a heavy truck. And most likely, it won't pass the safety regulations
Seal gets my vote.
Must agree its a lovely car that seems to deliver on quality and bigtime on performance for a everyday car make a few super cars blush
I am a Tesla fan but this looks way nicer than a Model 3.
