  • Skip ahead to 3:50 to just view the crash - Jim.
5 cars down the hill into turn 3 at Seattle's Pacific Raceway during Saturday Qualifying. First two tangle and I get caught in the mess. Biggest crash of my life. The strength of the chassis after we converted it to tube frame probably protected me from a major injury. Thanks to my mechanic Dan Watt and Rod Nielsen of Hot Rod's Restos for building such a good car.

Chris Doodson in the Honda ahead was avoiding the spinning 510 of Troy Ermish who was avoiding Lans Stout. Just like the camera, I couldn't see it either. First clue something was wrong was the tire smoke from Chris' car. I braked as hard as I could and headed for the open lane, but it wasn't open when I got there. The rest was hang on and wait for the noise to stop. We lost the fiberglass nose, but the rest of the body is OK. The rad is damaged and will need to be replaced, all four corners need to be replaced as well as the front and rear bumper bars, but the chassis appears to be completely undamaged. The skid bars under the oilpan did their job as well, so there doesn't appear to be any engine or gearbox damage. If it was still a tub car, there would have been nothing left.

I like Chris' car for some reason. But yeah, just ended up as one of those hold on and wait for the noise to end moments as you stated. Glad to hear its not a total lost, it looked violent from the video.

Glad that you are OK Jim. Sad that your fantastic car was thumped so hard, I hope it is reparable and will be up and racing again soon.

Pretty violent looking crash. You can really see how stiff the cage is in the video. Glad everyone is alright.

The kind of thing we all fear - unavoidable chaos. Sorry to see you get caught up in this. Only thing I can take from it is to remember to take my hands off the wheel...

Ouch. Safety gear did it's job. Seat with lateral head support probably could make such extreme off-roading even safer...
