After Sosa got hit in the head by a pitch he became a totally different hitter.. he was further away from the plate and anything that was inside he ducked away from and he couldn’t reach the outside of the plate. That was his biggest turning point
Hard to believe those 89 Rangers had a quartet of young slugging outfielders - Sosa, Palmeiro, Gonzalez, and Sierra. Palmeiro was the oldest of the bunch at just 24. Between those 4 guys, they hit a total of 1,918 homeruns. Imagine if they had been able to stay together and kept the same level of productivity.
I mean I’m not defending him, but the corked bat myth has been dispelled. Having a corked bat does make the bat lighter, but it doesn’t help you hit the ball farther.
Sammy made me a baseball fan and a cub fan. I remember being at the game he hit a 60th homerun in a 2nd consecutive single season. I walked out on the cubs for a while because of the Sosa drama and the Steve Bartman incident and only rooted for my AL team, Detroit Tigers, during that time. Then in 2008 I finally forgave the cubs and moved on from Sosa and have been with the cubs through thick and thin ever since.
@@GooffuX The drama around the cubs was exhausting at the time, especially since I was 12. Now Sammy is a distant memory to me and there have been other great cubs players since then.
Mine too. He was who got me into baseball when I was a kid...he's a little out there now, but Sosa will always be one of my favorite players of all time
Amazing how much he shrunk after the trial too. Coincidence? He played a big part in the 2004 Cubs’ implosion. He missed several games after throwing his back out by sneezing. He also got hit by a pitch and lost his nerve, and stood in the very back of the batters box the remainder of the season. Kerry Wood became a locker room hero for smashing his boombox because he refused to stop blasting loud music that nobody wanted to hear except him. And he never apologized for missing the last game of the season, which is probably why his number hasn’t been retired. The fans grew tired of $am-ME
You could make that case. All of the steroid guys should probably be in the hall with some acknowledgment of what they did. You can’t erase a whole era of history
David Ortiz also showed up on the same leaked test reported by the NYT, yet he's still (rightfully) beloved and Sosa is persona non grata. They both have the same amount of evidence against them, minus the corked bat which I think he was exonerated for and doesn't even help in any case
"rightfully".... Why? Because he helped end some superstitious curse for a city that had multiple championships in other leagues? If his names on the test then why isnt he treated like Sosa or McGuire? You American sports fans are a peculiar bunch. Then again Americans in general are famous for selective outrage and arbitrary adoration.
No idea what he did and didn’t take but saying someone was using cuz they went through a numbers decline from age 34-37 is insane especially a Dominican player from the 90s most of them lied about being younger then they were when they were scouted. 😊
Sammy Sosa is if I have my facts straight, the only person in MLB history to hit 60 or more home runs in a season at least three different times. And in each of those seasons, there was somebody who actually hit more home runs than him.
What a time to be alive. I was like 10 years old when this was happening i remember going to veterans stadium sitting in left field and brought my glove bcuz Mcguire was hitting bombs. He hit 2 around my section too lol
Narration sounds like AI 😂

An amazing collection of talent!
Conversely, imagine if they never took steroids.
@@kevinminer1293 very true. Probably have half as many homers lol but still a good outfield
Mariners had them beat with Griffey, Arod, Buhner, and Edgar and their combined 1,975

Why is corked bat illegal? WHY??

How was Sammy's personal choice to PED it up the Cub's fault???

It was mark grace that broke the boombox

Just for saving baseball in 98, Sammy and Mark should be in HOF.

You are correct, it does seem pretty subjective who has been shunned and who is still welcomed in the baseball community
Belte failed it too so idgaf about the 2003 list
Easy Sosa become toxic, they have a lot of problems in the Cubs locker room

Pudge Rodriguez, mysteriously started to shrink once MLB started to ramp up, random testing
I was at the corked bat game. A friend of mine and I skipped school and took the L to Wrigley for it.

Sammy was a skinny kid till steroids came into play.

sort of like baby Bonds
In the beginning of their careers, Mark was skinny, Barry was skinny, Sammy was skinny, Alex was skinny, Ken was skinny, and yes, Rafael was skinny

his downfall he bleached his skin white
🤣
I don’t know, it kind of made him look exactly like Ricky Ricardo
Not to mention in 2004 when he walked out on his Cubs teammates on the last day of the 2004 Regular Season!!!!
Players had to find a new loophole to get an advantage after the steroid era.
It’s always a race to stay ahead of the testing. Thank you for your comment!
Good Morning
how did he score 93 runs and only cross home plate 92 times?
93rbi, 92 runs scored
you can't score a run without crossing home plate an rbi is a run driven in@@cokesquirrel
His 3 straight 60 plus homers in season is pretty impressive in the roids era.
Agreed, definitely impressive but will always carry the stigma of the PED use
@@BBUYTTV Thats crazy part if it was real it makes U wonder if he would have been a HOF.
@@fliplife67 I wish we could know for sure. My guess is that there are PED users already in the HOF, but those tainted players will not make it in
