- MLB's Most Feared Bullpen: The Nasty Boys Story
The Cincinnati Reds' bullpen, which included a trio of fireballers, Rob Dibble, Norm Charlton, and Randy Myers, became more than just relievers; they were downright nasty!
You had to forget about conventional bullpen roles; because this trio was brash, bold, and unapologetically loud.

The fun thing about the Nasty Boys using M.C. Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" as their song, is the fact that M.C. Hammer used to be the batboy for the team they beat in the World Series, the Oakland A's. They're the ones who gave him the name "Hammer" because they thought he looked like Hank Aaron.
That’s right! I forgot he was the bat boy for the A’s. Thank you for sharing!
His brother was a batboy. Hammer used his dancing skills outside of the Coliseum.
You’re right about that!!!
Ahhh 1990 was great. As a 10 year old kid who just started paying attention to sports and moving to KY in 1989 the Reds were instantly my favorite team. Sabo,Larkin,Davis,Rijo and the Nasty boys were so fun. Right around the corner was Jordan and the Bulls.
That was a fun era for the Reds!
The traditional Reds uniform from the 70’s & 80’s is the best Unis the Reds have ever had.
I like that one too! It has a real clean look. Thank you for the comment!
The 90 reds are the most underrated team in MLB history... They went wire to wire and swept the defending world series champions... If they were a new York team, they'd be talked about as one of the best teams of all time...
I agree, they were pretty spectacular. Interestingly enough, if I remember correctly they were supposed to get steamrolled by the A's that year. Everybody saw them as a juggernaut that couldn't be stopped. It turned out that the Reds were actually the team that couldn't be stopped. Thank you for the comment!
@@BBUYTTV Vegas had the odds of a reds sweep at 100 to 1... Which was considered generous by many at the time...
@@ryansteele2677 that sounds about right. It was quite a surprise at the time.
I am a Reds fan and you are crazy. They won 90 games and were lucky to win the division. They were 10 games above 500 n the first month the rest of season they played 500
@@jonklein7130 they got hot at the right time and shocked the world.
With the Nasty Boys, the game was over by the 6th inning
No doubt! When they came in it was lights out...close the door...game over!
Norm Charlton! The Sheriff!!
Love it! Thank you for the comment!
Back at that time it seemed like Dibble was on espn every week getting into a fight.
He was definitely a brawler. 100% pure testosterone whose main weapon was intimidation. Thank you for the comment.
@@BBUYTTV my brother once told me that they used to call him the Head Hunter.
@@HeavyJ713 he definitely was a head hunter who wouldn’t hesitate to throw at your head if you made him mad.
The 1990 season probably shocks young people because of how big the Oakland Athletics were. Everybody was expecting Oakland to win the World Series. That season they were unstoppable and had swagger.
No doubt. Everyone at the time thought there was no way they could lose to the Reds. Thank you for the comment!
piniella couldn't duplicate it in Seattle, Tampa, or Chicago 😢
You are right. He had success but couldn’t take it all the way. Thank you for the comment!
But I think it's fair to say the reason Tampa didn't win a World Series between 2003-05 wasn't because of Lou Piniella's bad managing.
@@mizztery2994 I agree with that
Randy Myer was my 8th grade baseball coach. We lost 2 games that season, one being the championship. This man was WILD!!!
Randy Meyers was the only one who kept his World Series uniform because he was sitting in front of his locker with his giant bowie knife eating cheese and intimidated the guy sent to collect it. He was scary in person and on the mound.
The attitude when taking the mount sums it all up!!
No Doubt
You could say that was the first big 3 of the pen. Once the royals big 3 came on in 2015 seems everyone followed that blueprint, they had 3 closers 💪💪🔥🔥
They were definitely the pioneers. The Royals bullpen in 2015 was definitely in that same mold and really tough. Thank you for your comment!
When Randy Myers closed for the Cubs many times I would Harry Carey say "They're dancing in the streets of Vancouver Washington-Randy Myers saved another game"
That’s cool! I haven’t heard that before. Thank you for sharing!
That was a great team Lou had nobody could hit the nasty boys then Chris n Barry held down the infield. ⚾️
@@JeremyWaldrop-ls2pn swept the series from the mighty A’s
Just from the thumbnail, my first thought went to Atlanta Braves. Maddox, glavine and smoltz
@@shanewoods1980 another great pitching staff!
Royals 2015 bullpen had some flamethrowers. What did they go like 8 scoreless innings in game 1 of the WS. Wild
That bullpen was unreal. They were the difference maker for that team. Thank you for the comment!
@@BBUYTTVgreat video man 🔥
@@poindextertunes thank you!
As a Cardinals fan, I must say I loved that 2015 Royals team. So fun to watch.
@@BPB9973952 They were fun to watch, and it was nice to see a team that wasn't from one of the big markets go all the way. Thank you for the comment!
Randy Myers was also a stud for the Orioles.
No doubt! He had some pretty solid years with the Mets too!
Rob Dibble was the man. I was in 6th grade kicking my knee up to my nose on every pitch I threw. Hahahaha
That’s awesome. He definitely had a unique windup
They were so much fun to watch. Eric Davis was my favorite though. Absolutely beautiful swing with so much power!!
That was a great season. A very entertaining team. If you are interested, we have a great video on Eric Davis that you might want to check out.
Well, this was something. They were the feared relievers until Brian Wilson and the Giants came along.
I love “The Beard”! He was fun to watch. Thank you for the comment!
I have never heard any of the players on the 90 Reds say anything bad about Pete Rose or the way he managed. Whoever narrated this doesnt know what they are talking about.
You can tell even now Dibble is a tool
@@LucasHiggins-pp3nt ha!
I’m no fan of Sparky Anderson but I give him credit for developing the modern bullpen. The 84 Tigers had Juan Berenguer, Aurelio Lopez and Willie Hernandez performing the same roles as the Nasty Boys.
The 75 Reds used Clay Carroll, Will McEnaney, Pedro Borbon and Rawly Eastwick.
The true originator of bullpen baseball was Clark Griffith.
No doubt he was one of the key architects of the modern bullpen. Thank you for the comment.
I won 10 bucks on the reds on the 90 series. We had an A’s minor league team and everyone thought the A’s had it. I knew they didn’t even have a game in em. That ten year old me called it. I knew they were gonna win before the season started. Sick team. Loved Barry Larkin. I loved the A’s too though. I bought one pack of cards in86 and got that canseco topps rookie card 😂😂
Then my cousin took it as soon as i scrolled through it In The pack. 😢
Good times. They don’t make em like that anymore
They were definitely a great team that surprised the world. Thank you for sharing your memories!
I didn't know him personally but I went to high school with Randy Meyers. I was a peon Sophomore in his senior year. But it was cool to see him in the MLB
Great story! Thank you for sharing!
Look at how important the bullpen is today. There was a time when there was barely used.
The times have definitely changed and are not so starter dependent like they used to be. Thank you for watching and thank you for the comment!
Remember when Rob Dibble was on a radio show with Dan Patrick and he got clowned so hard by Phil Mickelson one time that he quit.
I remember him being on Dan Patrick's show but I don't remember the incident with Phil Mickelson. That is interesting. Thank you for sharing!
I was 11 years old when they won the world series, I’m not sure I’ll ever see another one in my life, but I’m grateful for that one
It's been a long stretch for Cincinnati fans. Hopefully you will see one. Cincy is a great baseball town and deserves to have another championship team. Thank you for your comment!
@@BBUYTTV there will be one soon
@@averagecitizen8491 they have some good young players. We shall see!
Dotel, Lidge and Wagner for the Astros were the best bullpen I've ever seen,
Definitely a tough bullpen. Wagner should be in the hall of fame in my opinion. Thank you for sharing
Yeeah, some Norm Charlton content!
Great video, man. 🍻🍻
Can't wait for the next one!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Best closers by committee in modern mlb history
I think I probably agree…the only ones I can think of that might come close are the 2015 Royals bullpen. Thank you for watching and thank you for the comment!
Who is doing the voice over in this? That isnt a bot I dont think.
Nope a great guy who is a voice actor working out of Florida.
The sweep in world serious I didn't expect it was impressive against Oakland
That shocked a lot of people. A lot of people thought the A’s couldn’t be beat that year. Thank you for watching and thank you for the comment!
Ai voice is killing me
Any excuse to trash Charlie Hustle, huh?
Not really, just relaying what the players themselves said at that time. I actually really like the way Pete Rose played the game. To me if everyone played as hard as Pete did baseball would be in much better shape. Thank you for the comment.
Seems every MLB player generation has its bad behaviors, and this was the era of bench clearing brawls. Good riddance.
Definitely a different era with different levels of what was acceptable
1:27 ..but somehow lacks the hand-eye cordination to give a decent (non white dude) high five 😂
