  • Was asked quite a bit in the Nova sorceress video, if frost nova was better or worse - and how it played differently - so today, we're going to look at the proper frost nova build, and how it compares, and what is different about your equipment choices.

    I just started playing with this build and like it a lot. Raw dps from the nova is def less than a geared out lightning sorc, but both your blizzard and orb do good supplemental damage. in the blink of an eye you can drop a blizzard, fire an orb, and then tele stomp/nova into a pack and your dps gets kicked up quite a notch. You have to be much more active but I think with those two additional skills in the mix this rivals nova builds.
    I'm running 3 piece tal's and just have an occy/shako; on P1 at least this will clear everything easily/quicky with 400-500MF easily achieved. Originally I was going to spec light nova as my end game sorc but now instead of a griffon's and infinity I think I just want a death's fathom and I'll be set. I specced less into energy shield and more into cold mastery and I think this is prob the way to go.

    I was initially going to build my Sorc for this ladder season as a hybrid frozen orb / lightning nova. But sunder charms actually made me second guess that, and I ultimately switched to frost nova. In testing, the crowd control it gave by chilling enemies proved more valuable than the higher damage of lightning nova. Since I went all in on cold damage, I chose to max cold mastery to get that highest possible - enemy resists so that even immune monsters would be down to -100. Then I went half into energy shield. What I mean by this is, after maxing frost nova, blizzard, frozen orb, and cold mastery, and the 1 point wonders in warmth, teleport, and static field (I haven't put a point into a frozen armor yet, holding out hope of finding a 3 energy shield / x to a frozen armor skill), I was putting the rest of my available points into telekinesis. I didn't put any hard points into energy shield, because of the points required to access it through pre-requisites. I instead rely on a memory staff on swap to give me the skill. At my current lvl 91, it gives me around a 70% absorb, and my telekinesis skill has me flat at 100% conversion. Then I just balanced my points between vitality and energy. It's working very well so far.

      It's worth putting the last few points into telekinesis because % reduction skills like that get stronger the further you go. Max is 75% damage to mana, I have 1 point in mana shield the same as you on my fire sorc and you can tele stomp well everything. This cold nova looks like a fun build to play though

      Lightning nova keeps enemies in a stun animation if your damage is at least 4000-5000 per nova. You won’t need the freeze / chilling.

    • @johnjackson2349
      @johnjackson2349 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cjdig86 I've had a dabble with a nova build and definitely a strong build, I always play hardcore so the extra points into telekinesis really help against stupid enemy combos, my nova was 3.2-4.2k using full tals set again for max resists and survivability and a max energy set up. Level 93 so far

    I know this may be more advanced, but some of the newer players probably need to know about FCR breakpoints and such….
    Didn’t have the gear at the time but I’d like to revisit a 200fcr frost nova 😅

    • @evotikto
      @evotikto ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be significantly weaker than 105fcr version. 200fcr for nova is fine because griffon's provides 25% fcr and is the best in slot. There just isn't many options to get to 200fcr without sacrificing a lot of +%cold damage gear.

    • @Alzorath
      @Alzorath  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sadly I agree with evotikto here - higher FCR (200%) comes at too high of a cost for the frost nova sorc sadly :( - nova only gets away with it on some variants due to the overlap with its second-line options.

      @@Alzorath ditto, gave up the 103 frost nova to blizz and haven’t looked back 😬
      Not sure what they were thinking with sunder…esp with cold mastery.
      My theory is “the bug” in the beginning of ladder was on purpose to slowly rid of immunities 😉

    I did this same one but my Fathom is faceted along with the Veil. COH, two SOJ, Maras, Torch, Anni, Arachnid Mesh, Silkweave boots for the mana mods, spirit shield on main, CTA/Spirit on switch, Magefist. WIth Warmth and Silkweave and the SOJ, Im able to rock Infinity on the merc with Fort and Andariels visage and im hitting static then blastin frost nova and its decimating.

      Also have Frozen Orb and Blizzard for extra damage if need be.

    I'm really interested in this build since S2 is well underway now. I rolled Bliz/ES early on to push into TZs and elite snipe, but after playing some density clearing with my necro I realize that I'm missing out on a ton of bases and runes by not full clearing. The FNova build seems like the perfect balance of AOE and boss killing (with the pocket FO) for P1 games where I really don't need the extra kick of bliz. TS is using this for his sorc this season and it looks very solid for 85/TZ MF running, though I would probably prefer 3pc tals and FCR rings to the traditional Nova gear.
    RE Cold Mastery: you showcased 1 point CM and ES investment for the video. do you think this is the better option as we wont be building light skillers to passively boost our ES? or do you think you will be getting more value from swapping them and boosting CM and only putting 1 point in ES for more damage to the numerous Sundered monsters we encounter?

  • @tylerwitte714
    @tylerwitte714 ปีที่แล้ว

    It has the highest fcr breakpoint I believe, so you should be able to gas it up to 200% FCR if even possible...

    • @Alzorath
      @Alzorath  ปีที่แล้ว

      you can, but you sacrifice a lot of punch to do so - the normal nova can get away with it, the cold nova not so much. (all sorceress spells except lightning and chain lightning have the same fcr breakpoints)

  • @lkivii
    @lkivii ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Does it work with full tal set? Or is it too slow?

    • @Alzorath
      @Alzorath  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      when running Tal's, I oddly prefer fire honestly - this wouldn't be terrible with it, but if I were to go cold with full tals, I'd prefer orb or blizzard.

    Still worth putting 1 point into static. Regardless of main tree (F/L/C) 1 static cast may end up doing more damage overall, instead of mana draining on frost nova.. its all well and good to factor BiS gear.. but unless ya have BiS. Gotta make do with what ya got. 🤪
    Nova sorcs do require a level of tankyness.. proximity vs survivability. Max block can negate damage entirely.. vs using absorbs/reductions.. spirit is nice.. but its literally garbage compared to a lovely stormshield.
    I said it in world of warcraft and it still applies.. ya can't dps when yer dead.. and unless youre already 99.. one death negates hours of grind. Choose wisely? 🤣
    Theory crafting vs practical application.. more or less.

    Whats the damage of the frost nova? Forgive me if i didnt see it in the video

    • @MrLazyleader
      @MrLazyleader ปีที่แล้ว

      I think its about 1/3 of lightning nova. But since all enemies are at - 100 cold res, you deal about 2/3 dmg of nova with the advantage that cold immunes receive the same damage. Lightning Nova deals less damage on Lightning immunes.

    • @Alzorath
      @Alzorath  ปีที่แล้ว

      generally the damage I show in the video is a bit off since I take off my charms to show gear in a lot of them (sometimes that part gets cut in editing) - but frost nova when equipped like this is ~1800 per hit before resists - so about 3600 per hit for a good number of enemies (except those with more than 40% base cold resist)

    Am I missing something, why not use infinity?

    • @kasper1241
      @kasper1241 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Infinity doesn't do much for this build since you already have a lot of -enemy resistance from cold mastery. Mana regen is more important for ES.

    • @Alzorath
      @Alzorath  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Infinity really doesn't help this build sadly - we want the mana from insight on the mercenary far more than the reduced resist punch from infinity vs immunes... especially since for most immunes, we're getting them near the resist floor)

  • @Mikangelovillalopez
    @Mikangelovillalopez ปีที่แล้ว

    Theres no benefit to maxing cold mastery?

    • @hanson544
      @hanson544 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is. With cold sunder, immunes get taken to 95% cold res. The max they can go is -100%, meaning having -195% cold res is the most you can and should go. Max cold mastery takes you most of the way there and you can respec later if you’re getting lower than -195% cold res. Because -100% cold res is the lowest possible you can go.

    • @Alzorath
      @Alzorath  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there's benefit to it, but I prefer the higher ES levels, since it means I can ignore resists for the most part (low ES setups still need resists imo)

  • @pinbi7

    investment seems alot lower then lite nova , no griff and no infinity needed

  • @brennanreilly9475
    @brennanreilly9475 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Guys don't put 20 points into es its not necessary.
    20 telekinesis, 1 point es = 40% to 60% dmg absorb with no mana issues. My sorc with full mf gear feels tankier than my max block max res javazon with 3k hp

    • @Alzorath
      @Alzorath  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      you max ES so you can ignore resists in a pinch - since ES ignores resists when calculating its damage, and only thing that interacts with your resists is the stuff that gets through the shield.
