So yuuki is the pokemon and when he sent his card to linus he evolved. Its a bit wrong but overall still makes sense. Because technically this video card is extinct. It doesn't exist, never made it to market.

I've never tried overclocking before but I heard about it. So overclocking it to the max breaks it completely even if it was running that setting for a few minutes? I thought it has like a overheating system, where if it goes beyond threshold, it shuts down to stop it from getting damaged.
@@Jhay052347968 nope, overclocking it for that short period shouldn't really do any harm. However the fact it crashed is not a good sign, especially since he left it running
@@Jhay052347968 overclocking to the max doesn't really mean insta kill but will shorten the life span by increasing power draw, could increase the voltage (damaging it even more) and, well, the most obvious, rise in temps. Cards do have a built in fail system (at least newer ones), Jayztwocents did a video on that just recently. I will drop a link in the edit.

overclocking won't damage it at all, it can just make it unstable and crash. High temperatures could cause damage but they really need to be in excess of 95C, with this card being in open air and just for a short time it's not really a big concern. Increasing voltage can definitely cause damage, when they dragged that slider across it's possible the card put itself into a higher power state and risked damage. I wouldn't really worry about it but it was a development version so maybe it's higher states could be damaging. I wouldn't worry about it though.

@@dumbmonkey1313 144 fps is enough, jumping from 144 to 240 gets you an 2-3 ms improvement, which is impossible to notice unless you are in a very high adrenaline state in which you would se everything in slow-motion, for like 3 or 4 seconds, so it is basically useless.
You can see that by how nvidia compared 144 to 360, but they didn't compare their 360hz panel with a 240hz one, because it would be 1ms difference, it should be cool because it is smoother though.

@@shlovekon that's just because the 4k stream is higher bitrate so the 720p phone has more pixels to compress into one and average out a better and more accurate result. That's why an experimental 8k video looks better than 4k even on my 1440p monitor

ATI/AMD user here, that's how the drivers work with the usual cards anyway. They have a hazy memory at best when it comes to recognizing the cards sometimes...or fully functioning without any hiccups.

That cooler could be for a controller of sorts. And then the collector or whoever they bought it from prolly just slapped a Xeon sticker on it because they thought it looked bare
setting the linux kernel command line in grub.cfg is cursed af, /etc/default/grub then grub-mkconfig is more suitable for that
Like the overclocking app, which looks a mix between Materia and AMD Catalyst themes, some thing about felt strangely cursed.

It's funny because some laptop owners on Windows 10 have reported similar driver identification issues (Active signal sent to monitor) in regards to their hz rate and resolution being set incorrectly (1920x1080 144hz monitors being displayed in in 3K 30 hz etc). Solution was set to setup a custom resolution using an application like "Custom Resolution Utility", forcing windows to use it. Further testing you could have done on the card could have determined what refresh rates and other things like maximum resolution the card can handle further nailing down what niche the card was aimed at filling. (I have a few games that perform horribly with Windows 10 downscaling of my 1440p monitor to fullscreen windowed 1080p so I use CRU to force windows to send a 1080p signal to my monitor).
Imagine Vega 16 as an actual APU for Ryzen 7
Even if you had that much compute power on the same die, the biggest bottleneck for all APUs and on-board video in general is the fact that system memory is a LOT slower than GPU local memory. One would need to add in space for HBM or GDDR5/GDDR6, which would dramatically increase power requirements; at that point you're better off just using a discrete GPU.
They could possibly add a small Vega GPU to Ryzen 7 and lower, but I'm not convinced there would be enough buyers for a Ryzen 7 desktop APU. 6-core Ryzen 5 APU though, that might sell well I think

I got a Linus tech tips ad for this video and now I don't know how to feel
I'd be curious to see this card being benchmarked when its memory bandwidth is limited such that it has the same bandwith available to it as the Zen+ APUs. Wouldn't be surprised if its graphics performance would be identical to the Vega 12 in that Surface Book chip. Implying that it only has 12 compute units instead of 16.
So my prediction is that this "Vega 16" is just a prototype for the GPU that ended up being a part of the Picasso APUs. Basically what that DG-1 card is for Intel's Tiger Lake chips, albeit not published for developers to test.

the x8 interface isn't about connectivity, it's about power. x16 slots are specced to carry more power than a x8 or x4 or x1 slot. That's why there's open-ended vs closed-ended connectors on motherboards too. The physical x16 connector ensures the card only fits in motherboards that can deliver 75W.

You do know that almost all of the scripts written for linus, are done by his staff of writers...right? which includes Alex, Anthony, James, Riley, and Jake. (there are more, but these are the ones we see on the channel mostly). This is pretty much their job, write a script for the episode, put it up on the teleprompter, and get everything ready that Linus will need for the episode.

2:52 the reason it had all display port connections is more likely due to Display Port carries no royalties on including its hardware which makes it perfect for development because you don't have to pay anyone and until it's a definite consumer product why bother paying those royalties

There are some tricks to get the card working completely in Linux.
You need full stats on the card to insert into a custom kernel module. Then you should be able to use the full features, including the display ports.
As it is it can likely detect the cores and memory because they are similar enough, but without the extra data it is not going to use the full capability, you can at least use the ports on the back, which need the display output PTY info. Clocking info might need to be added manually because it might not be in the BIOS, considering it's a prototype.
Missed opportunity to pull that GPU out of the oven like Jensen did.
