Remember when the Z Fold 1 released and was very expensive, but we thought as more generations of folding phones come out the tech will become easier to produce and cheaper...
A near 2k device not even including a charger is a disgrace.

Well, I ordered the global Honor V3 a couple of days ago. 1614,00 EUR using a coupon and Honor points. Included where a Honor Watch 4 (retail 129,00), a fastcharger wireless stand (retail 99,00), Honor wirless buds (retail 50,00) and a 66w supercharger (retail 29,00). So you get nice deals, just not with Google or Samsung.

If only there were a reason why the prices haven’t come down. Oh. There is. Low adoption rate. Folding phones only sell enough to justify a new model every year, but not in the quantity to bring costs down. Because the prices stay high, the average phone owner won’t justify the spend and because they won’t the prices don’t budge

@@NyteStalker89 It might just be one of those things that is demonstrably really fucking cool but doesn't need to be anything more than a niche product. Can't wait for Apple to put out a fold though for $3k and see if they can manage to make one sell in large numbers.

They are literally never that much after trade in and deals. Can get one anywhere between $1100 and $1500. Value is subjective. I'll take a phone and tablet that fit together in my pocket any day. Can't see myself going back to a regular phone. They're literally a joy to use imo. Pay for what makes you happy. We're all different.

7:00 - the progressing "not bending flat" is caused by accumulation of dirt inside the mechanism casing, especially on the edges. I managed to fix that by cleaning out the hinge with post it notes xD It was LITERALLY a handful of lint in there packed tight as rock.

@@sandaldaniel Keep it clean, clean your pockets from lint and you could delay this. Even with the brushes you just can't avoid this. Its only natural for any mechanism. What samsung should do is give you a way to clean this easily. I just think they didn't test these devices long enough. My fold2 works fine, screen is fine but needed some cleaning.
To my surprise the batteries swollen up before the mechanism gave up xD Luckily its cheap to get new ones and here you have 2 so its not as grave situation.

I work in sports media for a local media outlet in my area. Prior to that I worked in tech support. A little over 6 months ago I got a Pixel Fold. I, in both cases, have absolutely loved it. When doing tech it is awesome for remoting into devices, working on a ticket on my phone while being on Outlook and so much more. While on the media side, it is amazing for post game interviews where you can split a notes page, that has your questions on it, and the camera section for recording the interview. Haven't invested in the Pixel Pro 9 Fold but it is very tempting.

There's no "justifying" flagship phone prices. It's a phone. By all means, if you have more than enough money to spend on gadgets, go for it, but don't try to pretend over-$600 phone prices are "justified". Heck, it's nigh-impossible to do so for phones of over $400. Don't normalize these prices.

A 400$ phone can do everything people need. Outside of gaming but if you have so over 1800$ to spend on a phone then you have no problem buying gaming laptop or handheld PC.
There is no way you can justify the price. It's cool if somebody wants it and can afford it but there is nothing about the phone that is worth a price. So, I agree let's not normalize the prices.

Go with the OnePlus Open. It's more powerful, and after using it for 270 days, it's still performing as day 1.
Using the app Unfolded I got these specs for you:
Hinge Angle: 179° (with case on, without should be 180°)
    Unfolds: 3446
    Average per day: 12
It's really fast (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2), and reliable.
OxygenOS is also one of the better Android flavours, I prefer it over Samsung One UI.
No fluff, just useful extra's on top of AOSP.

Plus the Open's multitasking is just hands down way better than the Pixel's. Google has some serious catching up to do to match Samsung and OnePlus in foldable multitasking.
Open also has the better front screen as well at 1440p 120Hz LTPO3. (Plus the Open doesn't have that weird chunk of no-screen phone next to the hinge)
And the better inner screen with the anti-reflective coating and *muuuch* flatter hinge crease, which is unchanged even after a year of use.
And the better camera system, because it shares OnePlus's flagship cameras, instead of downgrading the foldable cameras like Google and Samsung do.
And better charging with 67W charging.

As someone who has daily'd both a Z Fold AND the Pixel Fold for over a year each, I can say with confidence that the only reason you'd ever need a screen as big as it is IF you need it for work. The rest of the time you will inevitably end up using it folded. The nice thing about the Pixel Fold is that they thought about this when designing it and gave you an actually usable outside screen unlike the Z Folds of yester years.
I spent a lot of time working with mine, editing spreadsheets and using applications where a larger than normal screen just makes the experience better. I currently work as a rideshare driver and the amount of screen real estate a folding device gives you is just fantastic. I used to hear about drivers running iPad Minis with LTE connections to accomplish the same thing and to not have to worry about bringing a second device along is a game changer.

I know Linus said he did not use the bigger screen much but I used nothing but the bigger screen. If you have big hands the big screen feels amazing, you can still one hand it but when you want to two hand it your hands are not super cramped plus tick tock's are great on the bigger screen because all the text and icons are moved off of the video and over to the side. You can also use that bigger screen pretty well for sculpting in nomad sculpt if you get the sPen, also note taking at work is really nice on it. Drawing kind of not the best because of the crease.

Why do people keep mentioning the honor V3? the only reason that thing is so thin is cuz the processor is half as good and the phone itself can't do as much, as smoothly as the pixel, you also get stock Android actual infrastructure in Western countries like Canada where I live, meaning proper customer care and replacements /repairs readily available
Also good luck getting a case for that thing in any storefronts in Canada or the US. This is a classic debate that we seem to have every year. Yes, the Chinese , Taiwanese and Korean manufacturers will often have insanely faster charging, sometimes better hardware and specific points, but will always lack in terms of customer service and infrastructure as well a clean optimized ecosystem which I will always opt for over super duper ultra mega supreme charging speeds and unnecessarily thin designs

If you get a 1000 off promo from your carrier with trade in, it ends up being 25 a month for 36 months. If you can't afford 25 a month, you shouldnt be buying top tier phones.

It’s free financing. The principal, yeah, financing over 3 years is depressing. But paying $2k over 3 years is better than in a single day.

the biggest use i have for a folding phone is something i can use as a regular phone and as a portable second monitor for a laptop, also man i would really like to see the motorized cameras come back

"Thinnest foldable" Ok, now we are just pretending the Surface Duo doesn't exist. Also ist the camera even counted?

Or the honor magic V3 which is actually the thinnest.

The Surface duo isn't the same kind of 'foldable' that is being talked about here though, is it?
That is a phone with two screens that folds, not a phone with a screen that literally folds in half. That is the kind of foldable that is being talked about here. So the Surface duo doesnt qualify.

Surface duo wasn't a "foldable" in the way it's being used here. It was just a device that contained a hinge.

Wait for the price to fold then you can fold and justify the price.

I recently upgraded from a Fold 3 to a Fold 6, since T-Mobile was offering me $1,100 USD tradein on my 3 that I had paid off. I don't know what the 5 was like, but the 6 is a significantly better design than the 3 or 4 were. The thing just feels more solidly built, though some of that may be just because its new. It's a bit wider when closed, so you aren't occasionally handicapped with what you can do without unfolding it like the 3, but it's also significantly thinner overall and especially when closed, so it isn't any harder to hold.
For me, the best benefit (among several) of the foldable is the big screen making a much better device for reading things (novels or comic books, for example. I will never go back to a non-foldable if I can avoid it. It's so much money, but I do get so much benefit out of it, so the math kinda balances out for me. It's the same when it comes to the other drawbacks of foldable devices.

Still using an LG G8X, $700 and after 5 years its still going really well. Verizon puts out regular updates and with LG phone division folded it won't get "sunset" forcing a slow down. This looks impressive though if my phone dies, I could go for this as a replacement.

Honestly, folding phones depreciate massively and quickly which makes them amazing a year later on the used market so long as you make sure they're in good condition.

If price is the only issue, I think it's only fair fair dimension that at least in the US, you'll basically never pay full price for it if you get it through a carrier. All the carriers that have it (LOOKING AT YOU, AT&T!), I'll give you a whole bunch of you stick with them for a few years, which, let's be honest, most people will anyway. I've had two foldables, and I've never paid more than half price for either of them. Especially with the productivity increases you mentioned, it's absolutely amazing, and have an absolutely recommend it anyone who's okay is trying new things and having to spend more on cases. Speaking of which, the case needs to have a hinge protector!
