I think your application techniques looked reasonable and typical of what most users would probably do, I've also forgotten the sandpaper and I recommended it! Needless to say, I'm disappointed with your results and we'll have to revisit this. Also, I'd not recommend that your viewers use a permanent adhesive in place of a removable grease when possible as you separated these two surfaces with LESS damage than is usual! We felt your video already covered its performance compared to other (commercial) thermal epoxy well-enough. Our test was just in response to our community's silly suggestion. For next time maybe I can make this more clear but I though by the time I took a hammer to the CPU it would be clear this wasn't a recommended application for this product!!! - LS Edit: one theory I had (after shooting) was that a much stronger clamp would give me more similar performance by squeezing out more of the excess epoxy. Unfortunately many of the "screw-down" type mechanisms that allow you to fine tune the clamping force are more prone to user-error. I wanted something brain-dead simple (and of course expendable haha).
An Epoxy is two liquids that once mixed become solid and that process typically is irreversible, to sell it premixed would be to sell a syringe full of dry cement effectively. some epoxy manufactures have a work around to this with a double syringe so as you push down on the plunger the correct amount of epoxy liquids comes out both nozzles but that's very likely beyond the scale of what Tech Ingredients can set up

I usually just fill my whole bathtub with thermal paste and completely submerge my whole pc in it. It had yet to exceed -48° i did notice a 92FPS drop due to not being able to see my RGB through the thermal paste, so i made sure to cover the entire bathroom in RGB lights to eliminate FPS loss. 10/10 most effective method so far. Highly recommended.
The cooler was pretty capable for the chip tbh, it'd show more in a lower end cooler, however I think they're probably underestimating the thermal paste that's included with that cooler. Thermaltake's paste isn't *that* bad, not nearly as bad as that generic white paste you can get in bulk from Chinese ebay resellers. Stock thermal paste included on CPU coolers have even come a long ways in recent years.

Well, actually if you have a cheaper tower cooler, for example my Be Quiet Pure Rock, and I had like a 3600x which'll be powerful enough for a few years, and the epoxy would be absolutely perfect with conducting heat, i'd be gluing it on. For the gained performance, it's not such a bad thing. Heck, I bet for just a little extra you could sell it with the cooler afterwards

Tech Ingredients? I'm subscribed to them and they make some cool stuff! It's good to see them featured. EDIT: I would like to add that I use thermal epoxy on mounting heatsinks to the Raspberry Pi. I use regular thermal paste and epoxy, mixing them together at about a 60/40 ratio (60 being paste). It does way better than the thermal tape they come with. Thermal adhesives are used in situations where you need really good conductivity AND you need the heatsink to stick as there are no other mounting options. No one should be blasting Tech Ingredients for his creation and findings, and neither should anyone blast LTT.
Yeah, that was exactly the use case I was thinking of is on something like a Pi where regular paste won't work well. The other option is thermal adhesive tape/pad which is much much worse than this. What would be interesting is to see a third party test vs arctic alumina which is the general competing product. Thermal epoxy isn't really that expensive though so I am not sure why he claimed it was expensive, I definitely wouldn't want to try making it myself though for the low cost of it.

After doing something like that my CPU I replaced it and the MOBO* granted I know for a fact the CPU pins were bent to hell and back and there's no way I was going to go through and individually bend back each and every one. *Just in case there was a loose pin or something in the old one I didn't want to fry a new chip.
This *was* on a CPU that throttled at a fairly low temperature. I've had CPUs that didn't throttle till 95 C, which is where the real difference would show up.
This isn't thermal paste. This is thermal epoxy. They aren't intended for the same use cases. There is a reason thermal paste doesn't normally glue your heatsink to your cpu, because it doesn't have to. Thermal epoxy is for when you can't attach a heatsink conventionally.
As a danish guy, I have to question the still-sealed Aqua CD... And the fact that Linus used it as a ...well "dispossable" piece of film. Also, that's their debut album!
He started mixing up such a minute amount that the scales wasn't very useful. If he'd done it all in one go the scales would probably have worked though. From what I saw of the original video from Tech Ingredients they did apply the epoxy much thicker that what Linus did. That's also understandable as the components they used doesn't have a flat smooth surface like the CPU and the Cooler Master HSF, so it has to fill larger gaps and the slightly porous surface on that ceramic resistor.
@@blahorgaslisk7763 look at the scales on the syringes @ 1:00 there's no sane reason for not using at least that much out of that whole syringe, also the larger amount you use makes the measurement error relatively smaller so you'll be getting closer to the recommended 1:3 ratio for an accurate test

nah dude, i use to think the same, i switched to Gelid GC-Extreme and dropped 6-7c off of cured as5 (100% load) AND it doesn't cure, it stays tacky forever. i had a prob removing a cooler that was stuck to the cpu when using as5 and ended up (acidentally) ripping the cpu out of the socket, luckily everything was ok and no pins broke.

Xray Gaming thx. Under A Bridge Too Far, I think that ASUS, Gigabyte, ASRock and MSI are all great motherboard manufacturers. If you think ROG and AORUS suck, well then you don't need to get one if you don't want. I currently use an AORUS motherboard, and it works great. I'm generally neutral when it comes to buying a motherboard. I get what fits the budget, has the features I want, and has good reviews.
Finally! I have a reason to use all the Dendritic copper, epoxy, graphene, diamond, my high power ultrasound and cell disruptor machine that I just have laying around. I knew they would come in handy some day.
If you actually need a thermal epoxy, this is a great option. Too bad Linus didn't understand what he was testing and tried to use it like a thermal paste.

If a reaction is exothermic it will add chemical heat until the reaction completes, eg once the material has cured/dried. Hence after the material has cured, no more additional heat is produced from the exothermic reaction as the reaction is complete. Therefore it will perform better, reducing the temperature (and this is what would have happened if it was left overnight). A chemical reaction does not continue indefinitely, the reactants are mixed together to form a product relatively quickly, not to continue forming together forever, this is why they are supplied in two separate tubes. There are other issues to contend with the increase in performance the next day, as the any excess solvent which supported the colloidal dispersion also will have evaporated, which itself may not have been very thermally conductive, and until the reaction completes (irrespective of the exothermic nature) the compound likely just will not perform as well.
force curing an epoxy will affect its' performance - physical glue performance is not the most critical in this application ( pardon the pun ). adhering to the manufacturers specification may have improved the results. maybe this is a pocksy product.
@@deansmith4752 No, it's just that thermal epoxy is a product that does two things: glue+thermal interface, so it does them worse than products that do only one thing, such as regular glue or thermal paste. Of course, if you have to mount a heatsink and you need it to be glued on, neither glue nor thermal paste will do the job, thus thermal epoxy comes in doing either thing worse, but both at the same time.
And there was little difference between that old crap included with the cooler and the Noctua. MX-4 is basically the same and cheaper. Don't be a fanboy when it makes you pay more for no benefit.

@@butter5694 Yeah, I got a cheap $20 cooler with 4 heat pipes and a 80mm pwm fan and dont get past 52c until its 85f+ in my place at 4.3ghz (4.0ghz quad core in the summer)
I think for an epoxy the performance is actually quite impressive. Would be interesting to see how this mix performes with silicone oil instead of the resin.
Because I know you read a lot of comments, I'm just popping in to say that your beard looks great and you're a really great guy. I really relate to how you were as a kid when you talk about that. I'm definitely taking a lot of advice you've given in videos to heart.
By the way Tech ingredients has just put up a grease version of their thermal compound. Perhaps revisiting the CPU test is in order. I believe this thermal grease will give the others a major run for their money plus their video on it is awesome.
Cool to see you testing the Thermal paste from Tech Ingredients. You should probably ask them for some speakers to test too. They did some interesting work on refrigeration. Would be interesting to see a collaboration on high spec homemade cooling setup.
As a 2 component adhesive, you have to remember one thing after cracking it open: If the adhesive is only sticking to one surface, then either your preparations(polish, cleaning, putting on bonding agent) were shitty, or the adhesive is not worth buying anymore.
Probably industrial grade non gem quality diamonds, they are very cheap in comparison to gem quality diamonds but still have the hardness required for some applications. Could probably be obtained easily if you go to the right place. But yes, not many people probably have even industrial diamonds at home :D
My first build had an FX and an r9 270x innit. Too bad the PSU/Mobo died in the move. Miss the ol' space heater. Still kickin around just wont post. Seriously though, my teenage bedroom was always like 5-10F hotter than any other room in the house.

@@sovietbear3024 I ran an FX 6300 and 2x R9 270x CPUs in XFire. The thing seriously kept me warm in the winter when I would play GTA IV until 1-2 am. Now it is my high school best friend's wife's computer. The thing refuses to die despite changing hands 2 times now. The only changes it has had is it has an SSD now and I removed 1 GPU because of XFire support slowly dying. For what it's used for, the thing still runs well. I'm impressed it's still useful nearly 7 years later, especially knowing the FX line.

i wonder if you can make some thermal paste with some liquid metal like galium alloys and mineral oil.

The cooler was pretty capable for the chip tbh, it'd show more in a lower end cooler, however I think they're probably underestimating the thermal paste that's included with that cooler. Thermaltake's paste isn't *that* bad, not nearly as bad as that generic white paste you can get in bulk from Chinese ebay resellers. Stock thermal paste included on CPU coolers have even come a long ways in recent years.

Well, actually if you have a cheaper tower cooler, for example my Be Quiet Pure Rock, and I had like a 3600x which'll be powerful enough for a few years, and the epoxy would be absolutely perfect with conducting heat, i'd be gluing it on. For the gained performance, it's not such a bad thing. Heck, I bet for just a little extra you could sell it with the cooler afterwards

Look at Linus's reply to Tech Ingredients on this very video on top and you'll see his response, before reading that reply, I was thinking that it was a new thing made for better performance compared to thermal paste, but it isn't, it is just thermal epoxy and they have marketed as something that performs better compared to OTHER THERMAL PROXIES, I think Linus addressed this poorly, and I'd appreciate it if you could confirm this, because English is my second language and I'm thinking maybe either I didn't pay enough attention or I didn't completely understand his whole statement.

EDIT: I would like to add that I use thermal epoxy on mounting heatsinks to the Raspberry Pi. I use regular thermal paste and epoxy, mixing them together at about a 60/40 ratio (60 being paste). It does way better than the thermal tape they come with. Thermal adhesives are used in situations where you need really good conductivity AND you need the heatsink to stick as there are no other mounting options.
No one should be blasting Tech Ingredients for his creation and findings, and neither should anyone blast LTT.
Yeah, that was exactly the use case I was thinking of is on something like a Pi where regular paste won't work well. The other option is thermal adhesive tape/pad which is much much worse than this. What would be interesting is to see a third party test vs arctic alumina which is the general competing product. Thermal epoxy isn't really that expensive though so I am not sure why he claimed it was expensive, I definitely wouldn't want to try making it myself though for the low cost of it.

After doing something like that my CPU I replaced it and the MOBO* granted I know for a fact the CPU pins were bent to hell and back and there's no way I was going to go through and individually bend back each and every one.
*Just in case there was a loose pin or something in the old one I didn't want to fry a new chip.

This *was* on a CPU that throttled at a fairly low temperature. I've had CPUs that didn't throttle till 95 C, which is where the real difference would show up.
This isn't thermal paste. This is thermal epoxy. They aren't intended for the same use cases. There is a reason thermal paste doesn't normally glue your heatsink to your cpu, because it doesn't have to. Thermal epoxy is for when you can't attach a heatsink conventionally.

Do the test again after a year or so.
Most likely then "garbage thermal paste" would be way worse at that point.
Wrong CPU, and two degrees on air just for paste means a lot.
When you have a delidded CPU under water, paste starts to matter a lot more.

He started mixing up such a minute amount that the scales wasn't very useful. If he'd done it all in one go the scales would probably have worked though. From what I saw of the original video from Tech Ingredients they did apply the epoxy much thicker that what Linus did. That's also understandable as the components they used doesn't have a flat smooth surface like the CPU and the Cooler Master HSF, so it has to fill larger gaps and the slightly porous surface on that ceramic resistor.
@@blahorgaslisk7763 look at the scales on the syringes @ 1:00 there's no sane reason for not using at least that much out of that whole syringe, also the larger amount you use makes the measurement error relatively smaller so you'll be getting closer to the recommended 1:3 ratio for an accurate test

nah dude, i use to think the same, i switched to Gelid GC-Extreme and dropped 6-7c off of cured as5 (100% load) AND it doesn't cure, it stays tacky forever. i had a prob removing a cooler that was stuck to the cpu when using as5 and ended up (acidentally) ripping the cpu out of the socket, luckily everything was ok and no pins broke.

The epoxy reaction is exothermic while curing, so it's adding chemical heat until it's fully cured.
However that whouldnt explain the next days results
If a reaction is exothermic it will add chemical heat until the reaction completes, eg once the material has cured/dried. Hence after the material has cured, no more additional heat is produced from the exothermic reaction as the reaction is complete. Therefore it will perform better, reducing the temperature (and this is what would have happened if it was left overnight). A chemical reaction does not continue indefinitely, the reactants are mixed together to form a product relatively quickly, not to continue forming together forever, this is why they are supplied in two separate tubes.
There are other issues to contend with the increase in performance the next day, as the any excess solvent which supported the colloidal dispersion also will have evaporated, which itself may not have been very thermally conductive, and until the reaction completes (irrespective of the exothermic nature) the compound likely just will not perform as well.

force curing an epoxy will affect its' performance - physical glue performance is not the most critical in this application ( pardon the pun ). adhering to the manufacturers specification may have improved the results. maybe this is a pocksy product.
@@deansmith4752 No, it's just that thermal epoxy is a product that does two things: glue+thermal interface, so it does them worse than products that do only one thing, such as regular glue or thermal paste.
Of course, if you have to mount a heatsink and you need it to be glued on, neither glue nor thermal paste will do the job, thus thermal epoxy comes in doing either thing worse, but both at the same time.

Me too! But not stock cooler. FX-8350 on water cooling clocked at 4.8 GHz on all cores since it was new. Temps never over 60C.
Just upgraded from an 8350 50-54c in summer, 280mhz fsb 17.5x multi, 1.392v, 4.76ghz on water.

Cool to see you testing the Thermal paste from Tech Ingredients. You should probably ask them for some speakers to test too. They did some interesting work on refrigeration. Would be interesting to see a collaboration on high spec homemade cooling setup.

As a 2 component adhesive, you have to remember one thing after cracking it open:
If the adhesive is only sticking to one surface, then either your preparations(polish, cleaning, putting on bonding agent) were shitty, or the adhesive is not worth buying anymore.

Probably industrial grade non gem quality diamonds, they are very cheap in comparison to gem quality diamonds but still have the hardness required for some applications. Could probably be obtained easily if you go to the right place. But yes, not many people probably have even industrial diamonds at home :D

My first build had an FX and an r9 270x innit. Too bad the PSU/Mobo died in the move. Miss the ol' space heater. Still kickin around just wont post. Seriously though, my teenage bedroom was always like 5-10F hotter than any other room in the house.

@@sovietbear3024 I ran an FX 6300 and 2x R9 270x CPUs in XFire. The thing seriously kept me warm in the winter when I would play GTA IV until 1-2 am. Now it is my high school best friend's wife's computer. The thing refuses to die despite changing hands 2 times now. The only changes it has had is it has an SSD now and I removed 1 GPU because of XFire support slowly dying. For what it's used for, the thing still runs well. I'm impressed it's still useful nearly 7 years later, especially knowing the FX line.
