I think many salons are against it most just due to teaching . But if masses of
Women start using henna to cover grey well that’s going to have a knock on effect on their industry . Chemical hair treatments, I looked them up recently, just to get an idea into the £100s? And then top up treatments crazy crazy prices . So it’s big money for them. Makes sense why they would be critical they don’t want you to use it.
Chemical hair dyes aren’t an option for me . Both in terms of after effects and the hole in my pocket

@Lu’luah The most common argument I hear is that if you use henna, you cannot use traditional hair dyes until the hair grows out. A reaction occurs where it destroys your hair if processed by both ingredients. That's why hairdressers don't recommend it, because they can't do any color if someone comes into the salon with henna. So if you like henna, you stay committed to henna basically

@@anotheryoutuberperson38 That argument is actually false. I used henna for ~10 years and then got highlights. (We did a strand test first.) The key is you have to be using pure henna without added metals, some hennas have additives. The added metals can interact with the chemicals and cause burning. Anyway, I hated the highlights and used demi-permanent color to cover them up for a while but it washed out so fast. The highlights and chemical color also dried my hair out. I'm now back to henna and my hair looks so much healthier.

Every single time I get my hair cut at the salon, on my way out, the other stylists compliment my COLOR, a beautiful auburn red, thinking I got the color done at the salon. It's hilarious. I've used chemical dyes before and they make my curly fine hair so frizzy and mess up the curl pattern quite a bit. I've gone back to henna. Been using it on and off for almost 15 years.

As someone who has dyed her hair with henna since I was 16 it is absolutely crazy how toxic and rude people are about henna. What’s the craziest part to me is I’ve been using it for so long and have yet to find any cons. I got told constantly that my hair is so pretty and heathy. It has thickened my hair and protected it too. I love my color and slight changes to it always fade out into the original color. I have also been able to bleach it and it took 11 tries for it to actually get it to light color it needed to be because my henna did what? PROTECTED MY HAIR. I was able to bleach my hair to an almost white color with nooooo damage. Henna is the best 🥰

"We don't know what Henna is going to do to your hair long term." Hasn't Henna been used for literally thousands of years in India as a regular hair colouring and conditioning treatment? As in they use it regularly over the literal entirety of their teen and adult lives? Has no one thought to ask an Indian woman this? I started using Henna when I was 16, my bestie's mom had brought me back a whole bunch from Pakistan because her son had told her about me planning on dying my hair red. She didn't want me to ruin my fine hair with the harsh chemicals so she taught me the traditional way to use it. I always add lavender and tea tree oil too, for added moisture and it really compliments the smell of the henna. Like a feild of tall blooming flowers and grass. I've tried box dyes and having my hair professionally done but it NEVER gets the same results. I naturally have light auburn hair but prefer brighter red hair. I find it to take on a life of it's own, like the spirit of the henna plant knows exactly what shade of red your hair should be for you. I've reccomended it to a lot of friends who feel bored with their natural hair, just a light mask and it changes your look completely; leave it a little longer and it's like a whole other person. LOVE LOVE LOVE henna.
P.s. I once dropped a little henna on my dog's head on accident while playing.... she still looks like she has a sauce stain 2 years later 😅 makes her cuter in my opinion, it just blends in with her other markings.

I’m a natural redhead, but it’s going more towards brown as I age, which I don’t like. I love bright copper hair, and doing that chemically was expensive and fades so quickly. The Moroccan henna is cheaper and more permanent than any salon colors. I’ve been using henna off and on - with some chemical dyes jobs in between - for 5 years. I keep coming back because you just can’t get this color with the staying power from salon dyes. I use tea as the mixing liquid and some coconut oil to add moisture. I added lavender essential oils this time, too.

Henna is such a normal part of my beauty routine. I am mixed race german/turkish. I always joke about the fact that I got that german personality from my father and the passion & looks from my mother. I grew up with my mother treating my hair with henna every few months and now as a adult I do it myself. Like it was thousands of years ago in Byzantium. The women in our family carried this tradition into the modern times teaching their daughters how to care for their hair with henna.
And let me tell you there are not wrong. Henna is the best thing you can do for hair.

I used pure powdered henna on and off my brown hair during the 80s and nineties to get this wonderful auburn gloss (and no harsh regrowth lines) and only really switched to box dyes permanently when my hair started having a lot of white, which henna looks awful on. It always made my hair beautiful, to the point hairdressers asked what I used, and commented on its great condition. It never reacted with any other dye I put on, because I only used pure henna. I find it sad that so-called hairdressers are so ignorant about a plant dye that has been used and tested for thousands of years before hair salons even existed. Plus, hairdressers routinely damage clients' hair with various chemicals and their own incompetence, I have no idea why they're so sanctimonious about henna.

@@lockergr it can look in your face orange. But I have white hair near my ears and the odd strand in the body of my hair. If I consistently dye every 4-6 weeks it builds up to more of a red colour , fiery red . I was thinking if I go 50% white will I use henna. Well if it looks orange rather than red I won’t be using it. You can use indigo after pure henna to get darker red, brown to black but I’m not sure I want to. I tried Indigo and it just comes out after 2 weeks . To me it’s not worth the two step or process. So if I can achieve a red colour I will continue to use it . If not I will go full white . I’d rather have healthy white hair than damaged chemical dyed hair.
I have noticed I get more volume and shine in my hair. But my hair is very shiny already so I don’t need more it can weigh it down for me soon after dying. But a couple of days later it’s back to normal .

Indian henna is amazing but Indians don’t own the right to use it and people need to stop saying it’s appropriation. It’s used globally. The oldest documented usage is in Syria and Egypt. One of the best books on this history of henna is written by an Indian lady who vouches for this.

Hello from morocco. I just wanted to say that natural henna without any added ingredient is the best for all hair types. The difference is in how to use it. I have a really dry fine hair and I've been using it ever since I was a child every week or too. What I do is that I soak my hair with oils a night before using henna and I keep it wet on my hair for like 1h30 or 2h and then I rinse it. I never had problem with it. After drying my hair with a towl I apply my hair creme and oil or serum and it did wonders to my hair. It thickens it and the best thing is that it gives my hair a nice firy glow under the sun. It is not only a hair dye but it is a hair treatment.

I just wish that I had a hairdresser that I could go to when I need to dye my hair - I always get into a mess 😆 At least the henna and indigo mix I use washes off the sink and floor better than chemical dye, as well as not staining my skin 🙂

It started burning like hell-fire a week later and has been burning off and on for a month and a half. I was miserable. It has settled down now. Never any dyes with PPD chemical in them!!! To me is necessary to use color dye to get some tones lighter. If I used only henna I wouldn’t get the result I wanted because my natural color is too dark and I want a “natural-copper ginger” look if that makes sense lol

I do this but instead of using dye I use just developer (20vol) to lighten my roots and then Henna. This way althought you are using chemicals, you're not using nearly the same amount that you use when you dye your hair. You're just using basically peroxide. This works for me because I'm a natural level 6 and I'm only aiming for lightening 1-2 shades.

I think thats what rubbed me the wrong way and so I haven't been able to watch him since.

Of course he'll prefer "classic" hair dye , that's all he knows! Rather than saying the cons outweigh the pros, it's more of like a ton of experience with regular hair dye versus zero experience with henna 😂😂 The only thing that's true is that removing the henna color is indeed difficult (not impossible bur definitely difficult)

I actually wish that I had never used commercial dye before I discovered henna. I am convinced that there is residual damage from the chemicals and as I have extremely fine hair and delicate wave/curls, it really messed with my hair's texture. Henna is lovely and preserves and protects my hair - I'm a convert for life!

@@ajh2295 Yes, the peroxide lifts the "scales" of your hair, and conditioning it lays them back down somewhat, but it will never be like hair that wasn't ever colored with an oxidative dye. Don't worry though, it will grow out. It also damaged my scalp, which henna helped heal. It took about 2-3 years to notice the full effects because my hair had to grow out enough, and my scalp had to heal for new hair to grow in. But in the end it was worth it, not just my hair, but my scalp and hair follicles now are so healthy!

I just love Henna! I use it for years now and I always have great results. I dye my hair myself and leave it in for 3 hours. The colour is so red and pretty. And it's much more healthier than those chemical dyes. So, everybody who wants to have beautiful red hair, give it a try.

  • @missraven3644
    @missraven3644 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I used to color my hair with henna (only henna powder, not one of the mixes) and mine did lift when I bleached it. I got a result similar to when I previously bleached black(chemical) color. Which is fine because red hair dye is also difficult to get completely blonde so you usually don’t go red if you are planning to go blonde any time soon..

When I was a teenager, many many years ago. My first experience with colouring my hair was with henna.
I used to go to an Arabic nut shop that would sell it. I remember my friend and I used Hibiscus tea to enhance the colour.
We used to get so many compliments on how nice and shinny and healthy our hair looked.
We both had dark brown natural hair and came out with amazing vibrant red shades.
From my experience I enjoyed it and my parents didn’t mine me colouring my hair since it was natural.
    I enjoyed this video

I like watching Brad’s videos, but I felt like he wasn’t being fair to henna.
I have very long dark hair. It gets a bit lighter and slightly reddish towards the ends. In the past, I’ve had my hair chemically dyed by a professional, used a Lush henna bar, and used pure henna powder.
Based on the cost, my lifestyle, and the effects, I liked the henna powder best. It left me with a nice long lasting color, was pretty easy to apply and work with, didn’t cost much money, and was safe. It also didn’t damage my hair.
Though I will admit, the henna bar from Lush was very moisturizing. I definitely looked up the moisturizing ingredients afterwards.

That was fun to watch. I'm a licensed cosmetologist, but am a huge fan of natural hair care. I'm currently learning about ayurvedic herbs and LOVE your channel. My response to his complaint that the color is unpredictable is color correction. Lol! Anytime hair is being chemically altered, there are a ton of variables that go into the final result. Even knowing the correct formula, you need to take into account the hair's health and previous treatments. So henna is the same, you just need to experiment a bit to get the right process for the desired result.
I also TOTALLY agree with you about why there aren't funded studies. No one wants to pay because there isn't a huge lobby for henna. It's a naturally growing plant with no gigantic profit margin so no on will pay to study it. That doesn't at all mean there's no benefit! Think of all the studies on vegetables. Ever heard of the amazing effects of parsnips? Didn't think so.
My biggest takeaway from this reaction video is that you are amazing. I love your content. There is so much information and i appreciate you taking the time to break everything down. Thank you!!!

Hubs acct to reply. There’s a rival company where the owner has a PhD & did her dissertation work on henna. She wrote a book on it, indigo, cassia, plant derived hair products, etc., and she tests ALL her offerings. THAT, plus the millions of users from around the globe, sold me on henna. Nice to read a trained professional addressing the critiques of henna. I’m 9-yrs in, with thick, long, always complimented hair. Imma stayyyyy right HERE!!!

We put the henna on overnight with plastic on our head. And I LOOOOOVE the smell of it. When I was a little girl my mom used to put a spoonful of henna mud in my fist before bedtime then close it with newspaper like a boxing glove then in the morning I would wash my hands and the imprint of a beautiful reddish brown swan would be on my hands for about 3 weeks and I kept my palm on my nose the whole time for the smell 😍😍😍😂 I miss those times.
Sometimes my skin would be irritated from the wetness of henna overnight but a little cream or lotion would solved the problem

see i love both options for the hair, changing it up doing crazy colors and using henna as well! i’m going to be doing henna again after enjoying bleached and light pink hair for awhile. i love henna because of how it coats the hair and protects it better that semi permanent hair colors (which can be formulated really well to coat but it’s not the same as henna) i think there are too many stigmas on both sides, talking about chemicals being bad and henna being bad. everything has chemicals, natural or man made, and just because there hasn’t been as much research on henna it can be an incredible experience for your hair! henna will always be healthier than bleaching your hair so going for a natural color witching your same level or hair and keeping it healthy henna will always be a better choice for not getting damage!

Try adding an egg or some conditioner once it has dye released. I use an egg, it is like a protein treatment and makes the henna go on more smoothly. I have fine short hair, but I have read many people with more hair fill the bathtub and soak with their hair under the water, slowly massaging it out. Then you of course take a shower like normal. That seems like it wouldn't clog the drain, since it has thinned out and diluted the paste. I have done it this way also, and soaking in the bath of henna did not dye my skin or stain my tub. If it does stain the tub, bleach removes it. Hope that helps!
