    I’ve learned to interpret universal tint as for all shades of white. They don’t usually work on someone darker than tan. I just wish they would call them what they are, light to medium.

      ... what is ‘universal’? Everyone, except dark skin tones? Honestly annoys me

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Harrison Khoury as I understand it it implies that the tint masks the white within the product, rather than tinting the skin, so as to blend in to any skin tone without leaving either a tint or a white cast

    • @JessieBanana
      @JessieBanana 6 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Unfortunately that is rarely the case. Sometimes it works with sheer tinted powders, but it's often hit or miss. Usually it just makes you look like you've smeared beige all over your face instead of white.
      It really bothered me as a child, because I didn't understand and between that and images of beauty in the media, I really thought their was something bad or wrong with my skin.

    • @heykelly
      @heykelly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      JessieBanana the skin care industry is consistently neglectful of being inclusive toward people of color and it's so unfortunate. I'm pasty white and unfortunately I can't wear universal tints either because they make me look like a giant orange. I wish they would make a broad range of colors especially in the darker ranges!

    My dermatologist gave me a helpful tip for applying spray sunscreens! He said it's better to cup your hand and spray the sunscreen in the hand, then apply it with your hands to make sure you're not just spraying it all over the place

    I haven't had a sunburn in about 6 years. I am very fair and burn extremely easily, so it was always a concern for me, which is why it's been years since I started using sunscreen on a regular basis. I regret not learning much earlier that they should be applied daily and reapplied often. The last few burns I got, over 6 years ago, were caused by not reapplying throughout the day. I was even upset that I was using SPF 50 and still got mild sunburn. I did always apply a generous amount of sunscreen, mostly because of paranoia. Now I am glad I did, because in the meantime I learned just how much I am supposed to apply. I guess paranoia is good sometimes.

  • @rdwok14

    I measured this with water:
    1 tsp ~ 5 g
    1/2 tsp ~ 2.5 g
    1/4 tsp ~ 1.25 g
    These numbers are very rough since most sunscreens are more toothpaste-like than water but if you're filling up your measuring spoon so that it's at least level then you're going to get at least that amount. If you take a 1/4 tsp and fill it up so that it's at least level and then some then you'll get enough for your face and neck. I actually found out that I was using more than what's recommended but I'm pretty cautious.

    Great information, thank you so much! I can attest to the Aveeno Baby sunscreen - here's a story:
    My younger son was a Lifeguard at our local water park last summer. I told him I'd supply him with all the sunscreen he might need as long as he uses it. I gave him the Aveeno Baby sunscreen with instructions to reapply every guard rotation. I wasn't sure if he'd use it as it says "baby" and, you know, at 22 he's a handsome, macho Lifeguard and all. But every few days I'd get a text: "Mooooooom I need more magical sunscreen! LOL"
    He liked it, therefor he used it, and it worked! Thanks for the recommendation, Andrea! Hugs~Dee.

I’d rather spend my money wisely than waste it skincare products I don’t need. Calling my Derm in NY for a prescription retinoid. This is one of your most helpful and eye-opening videos! Abraham Tan Hi Abraham. You’re absolutely right! I’ve never seen that before! Thanks for the heads up! It wasn’t that I didn’t believe you. I was just confused because whenever I checked it I was able to purchase. This is my first time seeing this! Did you keep trying? Were you able to get the Altruist sunscreen or not? I was on the UK site late yesterday afternoon US Eastern Time and this wasn’t there! I was able to place more orders after I read your comment the other day. I just took a screenshot of this notice. Maybe it lasts only for a few hours to a day or 2...I don’t know. Thank you so much for for letting me know about this! I know they’ll change it back. I’m sure they’re doing a promotion to get more “Prime” members and after this promotion they’ll change it back. Going to have to be check from now on! I’m a Prime member in the US and I’ve never seen Amazon US do this. Please accept my apologies. I really never saw this before! Sincerely, Gina

    I take my kids to the pool and honestly 95% of the people there use spray sunscreen. I see parents spraying it right into their kids face. Not only do they inhale it but so does everyone surrounding them. I cringe....

    • @stacyketner
      @stacyketner 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Another problem I see is they stay for hours, when i take our kids to the pool we only stay for a hour-hour-a-half , my kids may be annoyed because they were having a good time but i don't think staying out in direct sunlight for hours is a good idea

    • @joseajackie1480
      @joseajackie1480 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I’m one of those people that stays in the pool for hours, I’ve never had a burn and I’m a very fair person that does not tan lol. I just use a water repellent sunscreen and i reapply more often like every hour. My biggest advice is that you should now your limits and always spend a good 10-15 min checking that you’ve got every inch of your body.

      My brother is a surfer, he invested in good upf shorts, and carries a few dry changes of clothes for changes throughout the day. Moisture cuts down the upf of all clothes but even the upf protective clothing. Hanes sells a mens 50+ upf shirt for 9 bucks (10 with tax) long sleeved and a good cost to function option if you're looking.

    The thing about white cast is that it's "white" on some people, but on others it's gray or even blue/purple! Really unfair for warm-undertone people! Nobody wants to look like a Smurf! Unfortunately, the Colorscience universal tint doesn't include my universe. :-( I have to return the face sunscreen because it's too white-casty on me. I've had better luck with the Even Up Pigment Perfector's tint, which matches my skin color better. I'm hoping Colorscience will expand their tint universe soon! Thanks for the quantity guides. I'm realizing that I've been too generous applying sunscreen on my face (a little more than a capful), which may be why the Elta MD has been pilling on me!

    Hello Dr Dray
    Just to let you know I visited my dermatologist this past Tuesday. I have been getting laser hair removal on my lower face for some time now and i brought up my concern about hyper pigmentation on my face. According to my dermatologist, the dark spots are not to the level of great concern as I was interested in getting some sort of laser TX for them. Instead she recommended some chemical peeling in the Fall. On the other hand,my doc was very impressed with how healthy my skin looks and more impressed with the arsenal of sunscreens in my handbag...mineral spf for great first layer and Colorscience and Elta for tinted among other Japanese ones. I felt like a little kid... so excited telling my doc about you Dr Dray... and made a point to share the vast knowledge I have gained by following you soooo religiously since 2016!!!! Ms Andrea I can't say enough about you and your generosity in sharing your time and knowledge with us. I'm not only taking care of myself but my son, my 74 year old mom who loves you even though her English language is limited we watch your videos together and sharing with all my friends and anyone who wants to listen about SUNSCREENS AND SUBSCRIBE.

Your complexion looks like a filter these days. I’ve been using Differin for about 4 mos with some success and am more than happy with it esp as an over the counter, but I am starting to wonder if I should make the switch as you did to Tretinoin! Thank you for pointing me to this video Dr. Dray. It's exactly what I asked for. The bottle cap measurement is so simple and will be my guide going forward. Also appreciate the other reasons why sunscreens fail. I actually have the Zinc it Over spray sunscreen and really enjoy it. I use it for reapplying sunscreen but gauging the amount is as you say difficult to estimate. Thanks again for the great tips!

    Thank you for the bottle cap visual! Now I am pretty sure I am getting my face and neck pretty good. No sunburn this summer! That is the goal! I am guilty of not reapplying frequently enough because I forget or I get lazy. This year I bought a UPF rash guard like surfers wear so I only have to focus on my face and neck while I have it on and I wont have to ask anyone to help me apply sunscreen to my back. I thought it would feel claustrophobic because of the long sleeves but once I am in the water its fine. I have invested in a cover up from Coolibar too and love it! Thanks for so many good tips and information. You are motivating so many people to take better care of themselves! :)

    Thanks for the visual on the amount. The most affordable and best protection I’ve found is the Banana Boat mineral sunscreens for kids. But they turn my fair skin even whiter, so obviously hard for most people to use. The large bottle of the Altruist seems like a great buy, but I wasn't sure of the shipping costs.

    This bottle cap is helpful and the 3.3 grams. I now have one in my bathroom. I wanted to convert bottle caps to teaspoons. After trying to transfer cerave lotion from a bottle cap to measuring spoons I went google and used a calculator. 0.1 teaspoons = 0.5 grams. 1 bottle cap = 3.3 grams = 0.66 teaspoons. 1/2 bottle cap = (face & neck) = 0.33 so about 1/3 teaspoon. Your face be 1/4 bottle cap = 0.165 so about a 1/6 of tsp. So we been told 1/4. Most felt that was pretty impossible.

    Thank you dr dray, I now know exactly why I got a horrendous sunburn three weeks ago, even though I was reapplying frequently...... first I didn’t put enough on, and second I always stored it in the console in my car for easy access. I also realized the main ingredient in the sunscreen I was using was avobenzone so it was probably degrading fairly quickly, if it was effective at all from being stored in my car, that and not applying enough.
    Won’t be making those mistakes again haha.
