Also a youtuber like Hyrum who gives some advice does give good advice but he isn't saying to ditch the dermatologist. Be says to go see one what this is for information and fun, in every skin video.

    Oh, Dr. Dray, just got word that my friend from high school (we are age 66) is at Cleveland Clinic for surgery (yesterday) for what she says is an aggressive cancer...Merkel cell carcinoma. She put a warning out to everyone that it is caused from tanning outside and tanning bed... back in the day. We did not use sunscreen back then either. Please, everyone, do as Dr. Dray tells us....use your sunscreen and for the little ones too. I hope my friend will be ok. :-(

      I am an esthetician, and I remember teachers showing us pictures of truckers who were driving trucks for 10+ years and you would be surprised at how much damage does the sun do to our skin! Basically, all of their right sides (the driving side - close to the truck side window) were full of wrinkles, pigmentations and just overall looked very much different than their left sides (close to the center of the truck), that were smooth and had less pigmentations, skin was looking really good. It’s seriously amazing to see that and you realize that all about the sun damage is true! Take care after yourselves, people!

    why does the sun have to be that bad for gods sake

    • @samantarizzi248
      @samantarizzi248 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Well, that’s also partially our fault. With the pollution we are thinning the ozone layer in our atmosphere so much more of those bad sun rays are hitting us right through. I think sun is going to get much stronger and worse for us in the future... also when humans lost their “fur” our skin became much more sensitive to the environment.

    I’ve honestly never heard of UVA coming through windows, I find that frightening. Why are so many misinformed and not properly educated about sun damage? I’ve used tanningbeds in the past and thought I was ”doing good” just by stopping that habit a couple of years ago 😰.

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      uva also does not have anything to do with vitamin D synthesis (which most people are fixated on the "need" for "good" vitmain D from sun")....most of the sun that hits you isn't even relevant to vitamin D synthesis

  • @charleneheaman2033

    Once again thank you for educating us in a relatable and compelling manner. My sunscreen game has changed since following you. I’ve discovered some additional cosmetic benefits to being committed to sunscreen application that others may appreciate. I no longer use cosmetics to achieve the “dewy” look to my skin both with and without foundation. A plan over layer of sunscreen adds that on its own and actually makes my makeup application look better!!! I also believe that sunscreen works better as a “primer” than products marketed as such. I encourage women who don’t want to give up wearing foundation to substitute sunscreen for primers and highlighters. Wish I would have made this discovery when I was younger I would have saved some money and would have prevented some sun damage. I’ve always been that person who avoids the sun when outdoors, staying in the shade but after listening to this I realize I’ve been exposed in ways I hadn’t realized. I can’t go back and change what I did in the past but I will be controlling what I do in the future managing my sunscreen use more responsibly and perfectly! Thanks Dr Dray for your msg

      Visible light can also damage the skin, mostly blue light. In order to combat blue light, you can use a sunscreen with iron oxides (which is in anything that has a tint, like makeup or tinted sunscreen). I don’t think visible/blue light is particularly dangerous, but it does contribute to hyper pigmentation. As far as UV protection, spf 15 protects from 93% of UVB, spf 30 = 97% of UVB, and spf 50 = 98%. However that’s strictly UVB, UVA doesn’t really have a good measure (some countries use PA), but I’d recommend a sunscreen with zinc oxide spf 30-50 because it will be very stable and protect from both UVA/UVB.

    I actually wear sunscreen as a habit. But when I am on a hike or a job or on the freeway, I wear a Buff--a stretchy cylindrical cloth that gives me absolute sun protection. I will not wear it while driving or walking on city streets, because I don't want to scare people. I take it on and off, but there's always sunscreen underneath. I'm a dude pushing fifty but most people think I'm pushing thirty. My mom used to make me do this and I got teased in high school by other boys--moisturizer, sunscreen, vaseline. But I went to my 30 year reunion and those guys look chewed up and spit out.

My coworkers get bent out of shape if I close the blinds, and I have been "talked to" about opening an umbrella to shield myself against the overhead sunlight -- and to reduce the glare on my monitor that is exposed to sooo much light.
    I may start wearing a sun hat at my desk as an added layer of protection.

    i still have a question though. How about simply staying in shadow and never be in direct sun light? I know rays are still reflected by objects (inside as outside) and even the sky, producing what i think it's called "diffused light". are UVB and UVA also reflected? and if so, are they still dangerous in that way? I ask because i already tend to avoid direct sunlight, is this behavior already protecting me?

Also, for those of us with older, dry, sensitive skin , who faithfully wear sunscreen, and have difficulty removing it completely, I have a question: do you find that unscented cold cream works as well, or better than micellar water? This , of course, would be the first step in a 2-part cleanse. Thank you for any advice!

      If you’re concerned about HEV (High Energy Visible) aka blue light Dr. Dray recommends tinted sunscreens with iron oxides which absorb these wavelengths. Keep in mind makeup products like foundations also usually contain iron oxides and will afford you blue light protection (though not SPF unless otherwise stated).

    I understand that UVA comes in through clear glass windows in the home. What if you put up black out blinds in your home's windows and the room is basically dark with very little visible light coming in....does that protect a person from UVA ?

    • @adibakhan5563
      @adibakhan5563 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, it does. The opacity of a substance is a great guide to its spf. Hold the fabric against light- if little light passes through- for eg denim, then it has a high spf.

    I invested in RayBan sunglasses because I figured good quality sunglasses would last me a long time, but now I keep reading that they should be replaced every 3 years or so because the UV protective treatment degrades over time. I never leave my sunglasses in the car or exposed to direct sunlight except when I'm wearing them (and I usually wear a hat as well), hopefully this will prolong their life a bit. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this Dr Dray!

In the winter the lower sun angle comes right through the window and burns the plants whereas in summer I can leave the plants nearer the window with no shades because the sun is largely overhead. I don't know if that is a warning for skin as well.

And I also have read, that we don't need to reapply the physical sunscreen during the day, if we don't rub it off the skin, because the physical filters just reflect the sunlight like a mirror - what is your opinion?
