We played this last night. After rules, we thought at best it would be decent. But we were all surprised by how much we liked it. Great action system. Moves fast. Tough decisions. It's been awhile since I enjoyed a Plait Hat game this much.
If you get this game, expect to need to find a colored base solution. When I took a demo at Origins, the game seemed interesting, but it was challenging to keep track of all the samurai.
The lack of colored rings was annoying. I painted up some 40mm round bases (the kind used in Warmachine/Hordes/Malifaux), and attached them to the models with magnets.
The text doesn't restrict the type of ship, so he can destroy either one. Since you can boost the power of the cheap ships with wealth tokens, it might actually be better to destroy a powered up fighter instead of the carrier.
Perfect timing Tom, was just looking at the game and thought to myself "Has Tom done a review of this one yet?" and here it is uploaded 2 minutes ago LOL
Every time someone praises miniatures quality, I immediately doubles my requirements for the gameplay quality as a retaliation. Too often devs think that nice toys can sells a mediocre game.
But it’s true, good quality and novel components move units. Look at 40k. I’m not knocking 40k, but if the minis quality was only decent they wouldn’t be where they are today.
There's probably a broken miniature. I had a few broken pieces, one of which took me a while to find where it went. Fortunately, I was able to get everything glued back together properly.
@@LeeroyPorkins This doesn't feel anything like Twilight Imperium to me. I own both, and I wouldn't really compare them at all other than the fact that units can be destroyed in both games. The basic mechanics and feel of the games are so different.
I have always appreciated Toms reviews but that brick backdrop with the cartoony “graffiti” is too busy and distracting. I get what you were trying to do but the aesthetics of it are bad. It’s hard to see the game box
Jesse Wieman , I’ve been thinking for quite a while on this-I like the idea of how they are using different spaces for different segments-they already do it, but always making sure certain shows have a specific backdrop, which creates an establishing shot and unified aesthetic. Obviously, while still keeping it fresh for remote shows. Personally I think it’s time they do a news anchor desk with a blue screen to show the game. they are already doing great cut-always to show gameplay, but I think an anchor desk like Sports Center (but not as extensive). Now this doesn’t mean doing what MvM does with their radio setup, which is cool and works for their style, but the dark colors of the brick wall is doing no justice. a large green screen or a pip screen in the upper right hand corner could be cool. Think of them like board game news anchors. Yes, they could still do some in front of the gaming table, but maybe a better ‘Final thoughts section’ that could also be used for board game news or other programs. I’d love to see a semi circle table that can accommodate 4 of them-3 + a rotating guest star-especially for top tens. or even having the 4th person just be a person on a laptop answering live questions for the Q&A. I mean, that’s just one idea-I’ve got tons, while also considering budget, single camera angles, time/space efficiency. I really think hiring a newscaster/DP consultant could go a long way in upgrading and making a better flow to their programming and use of space. It would be a couple week contract at most helping you guys take your already great programming to another level.
Have you seen those cards ???????? And the ability to shift the markers with cards what cannot be stopped either with just playing a card. It's hugly depending on what cards you get in your hands.
smolle that’s like saying any game that you have cards in hand is random. Literally the only randomness in this game is shuffling decks which so many other games already have. Is The Godfather random because the jobs are shuffled or is viticulture random because the decks are shuffled? I mean yeah a small bit of randomness but still a high level of strategy.
What if this theme doesn't excite me? Would I like it? I mean - why this japanese themed games lately? It's like a new wave of some stupid themes no one cares about. Similar to zombies, vampires, vikings or mafia games.
antone1 You're obviously not familiar with Japanese mech shows such as Voltron, Gundam, or Macross. For fans of this genre it's a dream come true, and there aren't many themed games like this in the hobby.
You may think it is a stupid theme and you may not care about it but... if it says viking I'm giving it a minute longer to win me... Japanese games are the same. These cultures excite me. They are different than are own and seem to accentuate a values hiarchy that are western culture doesn't quite get. That's what pulls me to those two themes. This one is more anime themed... I have not seen a lot of giant robots in space themes... so not sure I agree with your criticism, although it is obviously not a theme that appeals to you and frankly I'm not sold either.
Well, lots of people enjoy new and diverse themes (contrary to your claim that "no one cares about" these themes). I really enjoy the theme of Starship Samurai, zombie games, and I might be able to get into vampires. Vikings and the mafia sound boring to me. But that's the point. Different people enjoy different themes. What's wrong with trying to add diversity so everybody can enjoy the theme they like the most?

Would love to see a Starship Vikings or Starship Spartans..

You never know when you will need a cape in space
Ok so does the mech with the big gun destroy both the carrier and the small ship or is it only able to kill just the small ships?

I play tested this before it was released!
Interesting. Hope it could expand for 2 more players.
What was up with the audio in this episode? :O
My guess is it's really hot in Florida right now and the AC was pumping so Tom also had to put his mic closer
Can't wait for fan expansions.
Mini panic attack during the dice tower judgement when you expect the minis to get hit
Every time someone praises miniatures quality, I immediately doubles my requirements for the gameplay quality as a retaliation. Too often devs think that nice toys can sells a mediocre game.
Example: Jim Henson's Labyrinth game
also, Blood Rage. ;)
But it’s true, good quality and novel components move units. Look at 40k. I’m not knocking 40k, but if the minis quality was only decent they wouldn’t be where they are today.
Games are not toys.
That’s not a reason to not have nice components though. Games with high quality components sell better than comparable games without.
Is it fun with 2 players?
IMO, yes.
Meh
Just got my copy. Why does it have an extra hand holding a katana?
There's probably a broken miniature. I had a few broken pieces, one of which took me a while to find where it went. Fortunately, I was able to get everything glued back together properly.
Leeroy, mine had the same... definitely not an extra hand as it belonged to a mini. Looks like that weakness isn't a one off in either case.
@@Manny-M Which figure should I look at?
@@LeeroyPorkins the one with a missing hand. Haha, I'll check tonight and let you know.
@@Manny-M thanks
Seems a lot like blood rage in space
On the Watch It Played video I said it was a hybridization of Blood Rage and Twilight Imperium 4. Lol
I suppose if nothing else one could paint the mini’s bases to easily identify one players mech from another.
Jake Kamps you draft two at the start, so repaint before each game starts? ;)
looks like play testers forgot to point out that one
I playtested a print n play prototype. I didn't have miniatures in front of me to give feedback on.
No, I meant the player would have to remember what color base they chose (maybe w/ a token of matching color to recall).
Seems like space Blood Rage a little.
Seth Allison I said in the Watch It Played video that it looked like Blood Rage hybridized with Twilight Imperium.
Seth Allison It's more Blood Rage meets Medieval Academy.
Ryan Bull I was thinking TI 4 because of the Ships/Area Control.

Man, I dont know. There's just something about big mech space combat without handfuls of dice that just rubs me the wrong way.
This combat seems like blood rage
Too abstract for what i was expecting.

‘Random’ LOLOL What about this game looks random?
