Rescued flying-fox immediate care: this is Nellie

  • Nellie is a juvenile female (16 weeks) Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was hooked up on barbed wire by her belly.
To get the barbs out of her belly without damaging anything internally, I took her to the vet and unhooked her in a controlled situation (not perched on top of a ladder) while she was anaesthetised.
I managed to get the barbs out without puncturing her peritoneum. Initially I decided I wanted the wound left open so it could drain, but she started peeing and pooing into it so I took her back on day 2 and had it stitched.
This video shows bits of her care during the first day and evening.
The good news is she's doing well and is likely to be OK longterm after her belly heals YAY.
Update: Nellie removed her stitches twice. Eventually the wound was left to heal as an open wound because it couldn't be restitched so long afterwards, and Nellie was only going to bite them out again.
She did actually heal completely, however it took about a month (with her not helpful assistance).
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).
    tolgabathospital.org/donate/
Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
    Here’s Jenny’s email.

Barbed wire is used specifically to ward off humans, who know that it's going to hurt them, and it's never close enough to the ground for anything but an unlucky bird or bat to be accidentally caught by it. It's not evil, it's the natural consequences of humans living on the same planet as other animals.

There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

She hasn't gone back to the wild yet. It will be about 2-3 months. Her belly needs to heal then the brushing and wing damage will take another month or so to show up then heal, and then our release aviary will be closed down for a couple of months for baby season because nobody has time to staff a release aviary for 6 hours a day on top of caring for all the babies

I am always so surprised that a wild animal will let you handle them the way you are able to do. I admire what you do for them so much.

Once the adrenaline wears off they just accept the care. They're smart, but if I gave them the opportunity to fly off, they would.

It's amazing how one with an injury like this can recover, yet some who are mostly stressed and dehydrated just seem to give up. She is adorable!

You never cease to amaze me with your love and care for rescued bats. Nellie has such an adorable face with those bright eyes. Will keep you, fellow carers and rescue bats in my thoughts and prayers. Hope your region of the world will get the gentle rains needed to help plants and animals.
So glad Nellie is well on her way to healing.
    Bless you Meg.
    Best wishes,
