Flying-fox has an xray: this is Linti

  • I managed to get an xray for Linti today; I really didn't hold out much hope for her damaged elbow because it was "clicking" when I moved it around. I suspected that her elbow had been dislocated recently and while it was back in place, that the damage would be to her ligaments and tendons and soft tissues.
    Soft tissue injuries generally heal with time but ligaments and tendons are difficult things to heal.
    I'm grateful to Summer Hill vets for fitting me in and giving their expertise. It took quite a while for the xray machine to decide to exorcise its gremlins and start to work (thanks Jess for checking all the connections and cleaning them out).
    Sometimes you just don't get the result you were hoping for; on examination, vet Lydia can feel the dislocation looseness; no matter what we do Linti is going to end up with a stiff joint which means she's not releasable.
    Flying-foxes need to have the joints and power of an elite athlete; Linti wasn't going go be releasable, ever.
    Reluctantly we euthanased Linti; sometimes you can't win them all; sometimes you can't even win one...
    Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).
    tolgabathospital.org/donate/
    Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
    If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
    IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
    The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
    Here’s Jenny’s email.

    Thank you, Meg for all you do for these sweet, adorable batties. I always go to your description first to see what happens before I watch. I can’t watch this one, so I’m letting it play to the end (muted) while I read the comments. Somewhere I read that it benefits your channel to let it play through to the end even if I don’t actually watch. Thank you for enduring the pain while I can mute it …. You’re a strong caring person.

      Thanks Trixie; it all helps.
      I don't get paralysed by grief over this because it's part of bat rescue and if I couldn't manage the death, I'd have opted out a long time ago.
      I have a peculiar brain which can compartmentalise the death without being distressed by it. It helps if I name them so I can remember them as an individual who had a story and was loved; it helps that I share the loss on YT, so I'm not alone in the loss.
      I don't expect people to watch if they can't cope with it, but I do think you get stronger and more compassionate (and realistic) if you let some of the loss into yourself.

    She was so sweet the way she let you manipulate the elbow with torn tendons/ligaments (had to be painful) without biting. They know they're in the best hands possible.
    I'm sad you had to let her go.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I was trying to see if she had any stiffening or guarding as a pain response to the movements I was making. If she fought me or guarded I'd have stopped but she seemed quite relaxed. The more information I get from checking them out before xray, the easier it is to make an assessment as to what is actually going on.
      It sounds cruel but in hospital a doctor would manipulate the joint to see where the patient said it hurts and what movements the joint will make without extreme pain.
      I'm always guided by the bat though as to how far I will take the movements.
      Interestingly with Foveaux from last week, she was very stiff in her legs and wouldn't let me stretch them out; during the xray she was also very stiff (and she should have been very relaxed). I still don't know why she was stiff but she's doing well now and there were not pelvic or spinal injuries seen.

    So sorry, Linti, and Meg. But so it goes. Wutherinng Heights is always sad.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I never read Wuthering Heights; in fact, I didn't read any of the set works except for the first one (The Day of the Triffids) in high school; the second set work was The Hobbit and I couldn't get into it; I read the first few pages of Jane Eyre and thought it was needlessly pompous as was Pride and Predjudice. So basically I didn't read any of them but listened in class what we were supposed to think and spewed it back in essays and exams; life is too short to read books you don't enjoy; I got first level high passes because I'm literate, not because I read any of the works.
      That also went for all the Shakespeare plays too.

    • @bevakathedementedraccoon
      @bevakathedementedraccoon หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Megabattie your approach to Shakespeare might have worked better for me than my own. I made a prat of myself in an essay on romeo and juliet that my teacher decided to share with the whole class. 25 yrs on and it still occasionally gets dragged into the sunlight again by my "friends" lol. We had to read it, but then they let us watch the movie version (the newer one) as well. So i had both versions in my lil noggin when it came to essay time. I got confuddled and wrote "so he pulled out his sword and shot him".. sigh, shakespeare is not my thing lol

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @bevakathedementedraccoon LOL - I promptly forgot everything about Shakespeare, the Bronte Sisters, Jane Austen and whomever wrote Jane Eyre. I never watched any of the movies of any of them, having had enough from the enforced study of the tedious works. I didn't avail myself of Shakespeare when I visited England.
      I don't feel ignorant or uneducated - it just didn't appeal to me; I also don't like Jazz because it sounds too random to me. I love classical music (what I like I like, and I don't like Mahler who is my Mum's fave composer) and I select what I like according to if I like it. I love a lot of opera - I have NFI what they're all about but if I like the music I'm not interested in the ridiculous plot lines. I listen, I don't watch.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think as children and young adults you should be exposed to a variety of influences and genres, however you're entitled to not like things. Imagine a world where everyone liked all the same things (and I'm not talking about social media where everyone follows stupid influencers because their own lives have a paucity of enrichment).
      I hated the Tolkien Classics and the English literature classics; that doesn't stop me reading every night, and doesn't stop me enjoying literature, just the literature I like reading.
      I don't (in general) listen to the popular music but if I hear something I like, I buy the track and add it to my playlists; I'm quite eclectic.
      My nephs are big in the Jazz scene in Sydney, but I really don't like jazz - it doesn't do it for me and about one set (accompanied by a glass of champagne) is about all I can tolerate before I need to retire my ears to something less intrusive. I love their passion but I find it hard going.
      If I want to go to a museum, I do; if I don't, I don't. I pick and choose what I am bombarded with and try to isolate a particular thing rather than mass exposure.
