Injured baby flying-fox in care, days 1-3: this is Polliwog

- Polliwog is a 10 week old baby Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was found hanging in a wood pile a few days ago. She was very very quiet and extremely skinny. She weighed less than 50% of the weight she should be for her age and the size of her forearm.
Right from the start she was quiet and not at all well, but what kept me optimistic that she would improve was her obvious enthusiasm with the glucose gel. It gave me hope that she was about to turn a corner for the better.
She appeared to have a head injury with a slight head tilt and pupils reacting sluggishly.
She also didn't seem to be using her legs well, which can be anything from a head injury and brain bleed, to generalised weakness, to spinal or pelvic injury.
I wasn't able to get her an X-ray on day 2 The vets are reducing their services with the pandemic, and they are really busy, and there's not always a vaccinated vet on who is able to fit a bat X-ray into their emergency schedule. I am incredibly lucky with the vets I have, but I also have to work within their capacity to provide care.
This story doesn't end well either. On day 3 she was dead in the incubator in the morning. I wasn't surprised. I thought she was dead on day 2 when I found Grumblestiltskin dead in the incubator, but she was still mostly alive then and lasted another 12 hours.
RIP little Polliwog.

I was really happy to have 2 little babies to nurture and care for - then I lost them.

I got attached to her in the litttle time i saw her on video .. it breaks my heart Polliwog didn't make it .. i know you have to accept it , but know it must be hard .. but thanks to you she didn't have to be in pain and had a little tummy full of wonderful apple juice 💞💞😭

It's sad when it's any bat that dies, but particularly gut wrenching when a baby dies and you need to remove the pacifier from their mouth. You did all you could to make Polli comfy.

Polliwog and grumblestilkton RIP little ones.very sad news, but I understand that they had odds stacked against them.
They did not die alone, cold and hungry and that is a comfort to me, for some reason it means a lot to me that they were rescued Into care even if it is a very sad ending.

Another one you've poured your heart into without success. Sorry Meg, its always disheartening when the little ones don't make it. You did everything possible but when they're injured badly enough there's nothing you can do but give them a chance... which you do with every bat you have in your care. No one could ask for any more from a person. The next one will be better!

You can see in her eyes she’s not feeling well, poor little sweetheart. I wanted her to beat the odds and survive so badly, but it just wasn’t meant to be. It affects me to see them not survive at this age. You did everything possible, always, for their survival and hear how much it affects you. 😢.
So sorry ... I'm sure it's especially hard to have 2 difficult cases back to back, with unfortunate outcomes. As always, we are just grateful you were able to ease the suffering in their short lives.
Actually in the last month of rescues I've only had 2 survivors.
And this year around 70% of the rescues haven't made it.

From the start she looked all done in. Thank goodness you were able to give her considerable comfort for her last days. She is so pretty. What a little lovey girl.
I like to imagine they feel like being with their mum. This gives me some good feeling. You give them love. That means a lot.
If nothing else, both littles were safe, warm and cared for before they left this mortal coil. We should all be so lucky.

In tears. Its hard to lose them at any age. We did squirrels and when you bottle feed a little critter, they're your babies. Blessings on you and other rescuers. Right now, I really wish I didn't know your heartache, but I do. The ones that make it are what I'm trying to think about. Y'all are just amazingly awesome

I am always amazed with how you come up with the bazillion names for the Bats. it is painful to see so many rescued Bats succumb to their injuries but am glad you hold up well and continue the work. You call the Bats sweethearts and you are a sweetheart to all of us. Thanks. Good on ya mate.

Sometimes the hidden injuries have already decided the bat's fate and I just limp along with the care hoping to at least mitigate suffering.

I appreciate you also show the unsuccessful rescues. It put in perspective that not every rescue are easy, peasy and joyful.
Well I've left out a lot of less happy outcomes lately because there was so much happy baby stuff to post; 70% of my rescues this year have been either DOA, died or euthanased

Oh Meg, this happened back in May and I've just seen it. Amazing how emotionally attached one can become to an enchanting little soul like Polliwog, just from watching her on video for a few minutes. How much sadder and more distressing it must be for you, who has cared for these little sweethearts and given them your best in fervent hope of their recovery. To find them dead must be like a stab to the heart. Yet you go on doing this difficult work for these vulnerable creatures, because they need you. God bless you and keep you safe. You're amazing. XXX

Meg, I rarely comment on youtube videos, but I really wanted to say how much I appreciate all you do for bats and all that you share with us. I would love to be able to help bats like you do, through the bright spots or the dark. We only have microbats in the United States, but I love them just as much as the megabats. Much love.

(occasionally I get ones that I call shit sandwiches - a compliment, a big criticism and suggestion of how they think I should behave and how to do better, then a lukewarm compliment to leave it on a less critical note)
If you had FFs in the USA they probably would be as reviled as they are here by the general public. It's tragic really. This current pandemic is a bit of nature pushing back I think - and saying that what we are doing isn't acceptable and there are consequences.
These videos always make you wonder how they will turn out.
Even with the occasional sad stories, I'm glad I discovered this channel. It's really amazing to see all the bats being helped and comforted by you!

The heat and fires were too much for the mums this year. I hope the remaining members of the colony can disperse the seeds that will eventually regrow the trees lost this year. Darling batties need a good habitat.

Damn. Just damn. Another Herculean effort. She wasn't alone, and she knew you were trying to save her. She tried to rally, but her injuries were too great. I don't know how you don't burn out, Meg. But the batties thank you. And we thank you for sharing your journey with us!

I can get appointments sometimes but things are changing at the moment and there may be days where i can't get an appointment. There's a lot of stuff I can do at home, but X-rays aren't one of them

Oh my, so very sad you lost Polliwog and Grumblestiltskin too. They were such beautiful babies and your rescues were, as always, heroic. Sorry to hear that vets are being affected by this Godawful virus, that's a headache you and your colleagues don't need.
It's plain to see these wee souls receive the most professional and caring attention possible from you Meg. My heart goes out to you when you open that incubator in the morning fearing the worst, and then get it. Finding the baby dead that you worked so diligently to save must be really tough. But I am thankful that they were mothered to the end, and died feeling safe, warm and loved. A peaceful death is a great blessing for any sentient creature.
