In defense of the Sniper (TF2)

  • In TF2, the Sniper has been branded as an overpowered class for the last 2 years or so. Today, I intend to debunk most of the common arguments used against Sniper.

    Also sniper is supposed to be balanced with not having a good melee or a good secondary also combos from other classes have counter sniper doesn’t unles there is another sniper or the medic is running vacs also sniper is usually in the back protectied by his whole team usually having scouts an engi a pyro do no spy’s a scout so no flanking without pushback also he is probably by a dispenser also a Brocken weapon that can pump out 150 damage with 25 ammunition is dumb also the sandman and cleaver combo did take control away from the player a sniper does that as well a sniper takes huge sight lines as well as control of the map also spy is pretty much not a counter to a good sniper a good sniper has jarate razorback as well as usually having a pyro on the team shooting flames about also just because sum class can tank a headshot doesn’t mean that they are good to kill the sniper what if the demo sticky jumped to get on closer what if the soldier got below 150 while jumping what if pyro was hit by a stray rocket and heavy is a slow class whith a huge hitbox also he is terrible at long range also don’t say well he can still make him flinch because heavy’s bullets stop making flinch after a certain distance as well as this is team fortress 2 not mge just because snipers can be killed on his own doesn’t mean that he will die with his team around also you weren’t in the air u were jumping also have you ever just been completely shut down by a sniper also sniper is practically a offensive class being able to kill a bunch of people in a short amount of time also sniper duels are just aim battles whoever is better in a aim battle the sniper who aims better will win also hey look you make the argument that a 2v1 against a sniper will kill the sniper but you kill a sniper and a scout and you say I’m just that good yeah debunked your argument so fast wow

      While I also think that sniper needs a nerf, you man need a break from internet

    Using a sniper type weapon, that being a burst damage hitscan weapon with no spread, is actually easy.
    That's why there was a need to add a mechanic that would *artificially* increase the skill floor and by extension the skill ceiling.
    Having high *skill floor* doesn't make the weapon any weaker, nor does it excuse it's high burst damage.
    I'm not even that good at it and yet i was accused of cheating when i tried for an aggressive playstyle, 180 quickscoped a Spy, won against a Scout point blank before even *i* realized what just happened, and was unable to rushed down by a singular player when i was camping *inside the enemy base...*
    Now imagine what someone with simply better aim could do.
    Cheating is a result of bad balancing, and the Bot Crisis wouldn't be a crisis if Sniper wasn't overpowered.
    Widowmaker Engineers aren't hard to deal with and autoaimed projectiles are a joke.
    I tried imagining in my head how a fight with a sniper would play out if mechanical skill wasn't at play, just numbers.
    And i found out that without that 3 times damage multiplier for headshots... Sniper could be balanced and *actually weak in close range.*
    So i belive to know the solution. Remove crits on headshots and replace it with some less impactful reward.
    For example:
    *On Full Charge: Headshot kills recover charge back to 100%*
    No quickscopes, and no comically large damage numbers. If you have a better idea, please reply.

    there's not a single specific skill or micro-management you have to learn/do to play sniper well, that's the problem
    if you'll tell me that well you have to shoot for the head then guess what, ambassador gave that skill for another class and it's irrelevant
    but i have an idea to actually make this job more engaging than fishing (real)
    just give a glare if the sniper is zoomed in for ~0.8s (WIP, probably deserves over 1s), delayed or not on other unlocks of course
    basically, you are very fragile as sniper, 1 or 2 shots kill you, not only that but you have to also keep aggressively zooming in and out so you know what is going on at the point and stay unknown to the enemy team, a glare would alert it and probably a scout or spy would race who gets your ass down first. but here's the catch, the glare shows only in the angle (maybe a little lower) you see while zoomed in, so you can still sneak in those full charge bodyshots
    another idea, make the fire go off the crosshair based on movement, rotation like in cs though not that ass like in it since this game is of much faster pace, and it's full of chaos, so if it was to work with the glare, a full charge shot would be even more delayed SO the enemy team has some time to react if the sniper doesn't have the mechanic ingrained in his gamer senses, if he's good he won't give them that time to react
    Disclaimers for the idea
    this game was designed with visibility of all things in it's mind.
    I don't think the glare should be a straight up blinding png, it's opacity should change constantly so it feels like there is movement
    maybe the glares should have slightly different hues based on which unlock you use obviously including that they should be also somewhat team coloured
    feel free to argue, i'd like to see why this idea is terrible for reasons other than it would just change snipers gameplay a lot

      You have to learn how to actually aim, and I mean really aim. It takes intense practice. You're just reaching.

    No sniper is not a zoner first off tf2 is a close shooter game also sniper has more than one weapon to kill the opponent upsclose such as smg jarate bushwaka cleaner carbine and also sniper is not a prediction class demo is a prediction class get it right

    Oh yeah also you saying that a reverse damage drop off is dumb because a the class that is weak up close would make him to weak to his counter come on also the thing about demos and soldiers shutting down servers not as bad since damage falloff reload times ammo count and range all keep them in check and also vac medics scouts list goes on also spy is hated because the enemy made a mistake by not spycheckimg or noticing the spy sniper is hated because if the sniper wants to he can just go oh well and lock down a choke and just stop a push so in full this video is just plain wrong it’s braised towards sniper and doesn’t go over the hypocrisy of this video
