aging doesn't really effect a mage's power in fairy tail, and makarov isn't that old his age has not made him any weaker and since it hasn't made him any weaker than it has indeed made him stronger than he was at 40.
He is 88 years old, that`s pretty damn old, he has almost died a few times in the series because of his age, if that does not make him weaker then i dont know what does...
age doesn't effect a wizards magical power. sure they can have back issues but in a battle they can quickly revitalize their body with magic. hades was was over 100 and even without his magical heart he was still a beast. in his battle against master jose, mackerav praised Jose for being so powerful at such a young age, Jose wasn't that young but he wasn't old this would indicate that as a wizard gets older their magic gets refined along with their age.
Well the Grandpa isnt stronger that Gildarts or Laxus. While the grandpa is like the 5th strongest mage i think. But Laxus has surpassed him so has Gildarts. But i don´t know if Gildarts is stronger or Laxus. I think probably Gildarts but we havent seen Gildarts fight sirious yet while we have seen Laxus do it. GIldarts is probably stronger in the anime but i would say that by the time the anime almost ends and in the manga Laxus is stronger. Can´t say it for sure though.
