This was a important lesson for nastu because up until now he just kept pushing forward with no fear or the thought of losing but the stronger the enemy he had to learn when to fight or to leave
Now u see why gildarts is the strongest in fairy tail he's insane with how powerful he is and a dragon overwhelmed him

True. That's why Gildarts shows here that kind of monstrous strength is not to be granted. He can kill Natsu already if Natsu continues to approach him and his glare says it all. It's much like "if you continue approaching me, this is your end."
It wasn't "A dragon" lol, it was THE dragon, Acnologia was the strongest, even stronger than current manga characters

In a way we could say that Natsu had luck to find Gildarts because at this point of the series Natsu would lose against Erza and even against Mirajane if she go all out
Actually, both of them can demolish Natsu at the spot immediately.
But they could've also pass him, even if he lost to them. Losing to another S-class wizard doesn't mean You aren't on S-class level. For example, if Erza had to fight with Gildarts she'd also easily lose. But that doesn't make her too weak to be S-class. So even if Natsu lost to her or Mira, but presented some skills. maturity, intelligence(I know, I know it's Natsu, it's hypothetical), they could've pass him to the next stage.

@@lukastace3154 I don't know why You excluded Erza :D To be honest I think that the most probable person to pass him is Erza. She saw his true strength during his fight with Jellal. Also she had no doubts that Natsu will defeat Zero. She believes in him more than anyone.
