August is sent to the reconstructed Magnolia, where he stands atop the Kardia Cathedral as the last of the Spriggan 12 standing, preparing to eradicate all of the town, his allies included. Before he can do so, Gildarts attacks him from above, and though he blocks the strike, the entire church is destroyed, which leaves August aghast. The two then begin their exchange of blows which, after he dodges several of Gildarts' strikes, culminates in August being struck directly with Crush. As he splits up into many cube-shaped pieces, August calls Gildarts' Magic interesting and then completely reforms himself using the same Magic, allowing him to punch Gildarts some distance away. The Wizard King tells Gildarts that it is impossible for him to be defeat, but he is attacked by an arriving Cana, who proclaims that her father makes the impossible possible.
Upon hearing that the two are parent and child, August smiles, but soon senses that Acnologia has returned to the battlefield and notes that their time has run out.
Gildarts, having also become aware of Acnologia's appearance, goes on to question August regarding Zeref's motives, to which August responds that his majesty acts solely for the sake of mankind's survival. This, in turn, triggers Cana to unleash a devastating attack-in the form of Fairy Glitter-upon the old Mage. However, August emerges from the assault unharmed, expressing his doubtfulness regarding the love between parent and child. He then, rather sadistically, asks Gildarts how he would feel should his daughter be killed before his eyes.
August's threat triggers Gildarts, who threatens his life; the Wizard King easily parries Gildarts' incoming strike and asks him if a parent should love their child. When Gildarts says that they should, August asks him why the Emperor's child wasn't loved and attacks him. He is then attacked by Cana, but dodges her cards, and again asks why the Emperor never loved his child.
August is lauded as the "Wizard King" due to this particular kind of Magic, which he can notably use instantaneously; with it, August can copy, master, and then nullify an opponent's Magic after having given it witness. However, he is unable to copy Holder Magic as one cannot use Holder Magic without physically using the required tools.
August carries a staff akin to a wand in his right hand, surpassing its owner's height, with a long and thin, gnarled wooden haft and a dark, round gemstone fixed upon its tip, partly overgrown by the wood. Apart from using it as a walking staff, the Wizard King uses his staff during combat, as he used it to block the incoming attack of Gildarts Clive, which was powerful enough to destroy Kardia Cathedral. Shortly thereafter August uses his staff to fire an unknown magical attack at Gildarts. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน

Robin Black yes i agree. Also Natsu is getting stronger during the time of his fight due to his motivation to win while Gildarts is basically strong and powerful. Gildarts > Laxus > Natsu > Mirajane > Erza (for me only)

It's actually pretty cool how the two strongest mages in the series (August and Irene) actually couldn't be defeated. They chose to spare everyone instead. Much better than Zeref and Acnologia getting beaten by nakama bullshit.
Zeref and Acnologia were beat by Natsu, it makes sense since he has got the Flames of Emotion. A power that is the closest to the One Magic. The most hax power of them all.

@@jdblueee No Power of friendship wasn't involved in the Acnologia fight & Natsu's speech didn't do anything in the manga Natsu oneshotted Spirit Acno in Dragon Force mode when he threw the giant 7DS fist
It makes a bit more sense with Acnologia since we know how strong Dragon Force is as we seen against Fairy Heart Zeref before Zeref pierced Natsu Natsu in Dragon Force blew Zeref to bits when he used Fire Dragon King Demolition FIst Anime however messed the whole Acnologia's fight up they got the scraf transforamtion right but forgot to give Natsu his DF mode from chapter 544
As for Zeref's fight I aren't gonna defend it.

It is heartbreakingly tragic that the first and last thing August saw in his life was his mother. Both were the only times he also ever saw her.
And both times Mavis never knew who he was.

Master Rai August preferred to simply overpower his opponents with their own magic. I felt it was mental warfare. Copy their magic x10 in strength and they lose heart or get blasted instantly.

I swear when I was reading this, the monologue of August about Zeref's child was very suspenseful. The back and forth panels between that monologue and Larcade's fight made it seem like he was talking about Larcade. But alas, plot twist he was talking about himself. I swear I got chills when it was revealed. It was done very meticulously in the manga.
The plot twist was imo one of the best moments of the arc. It was so unexpected yet so well done I really liked it

That's why it's good. Probably one of the few times Fairy Tail stuck the landing on an emotional moment.
His death wasn't cruel, but a release from his suffering. His backstory is cruel, his parents never knew he was their son. August wouldn't been loved if he had told them who he was. He may have been killed by Zeref if he knew with his curse of contradiction but at least he may have experienced love.
You gotta love August. He didn't take too much time for his character arc, but it was brief and good. In a series that always throws fake deaths for the drama, it's amazing how one character's genuine final moments can make you feel things. He quietly passed away and nobody will ever know about him.
@Tsuna Dragneel tbh I kind of agree with him, especially in this arc august, mavis, and zerif were really sad and I liked that, but come ooooon gajeel has a sad death and that was a powerful scene, but then he comes back in the most bullshit way so far, juvia sacrifises herself which was also really sad but omg wendy was just passing by conveniently, makarov has one of the most powerful deaths in the series, then omg he's back somehow, ichiya died a noble man but I doubt he actually died at this point, and the fights are just so bs this season, erza destroys a meteor with broken bones except her arm then also wounds a dragon, that's just funny, I really like FT but this season is just so disappointing, not all of it but 80% which sucks
Someone not sad at what end meet August are only people without empathy. Put yourself in his place and you would understand why his story is so sad, and will never see happy ending.

But, Makarov's death was such a powerful scene to me, one of the things that carried this arc for me, and it was actualy believable, because he always wanted to pass on Fairy Tail to his children, and he's getting older, so death in a greatest battle of Fairy Tail, in protection of his children would be perfect and satisfying conclusion of this character. But then it kinda turned he just needed bit of rest and healing, and his all patched up, no explanation! Also, the consequences of his death, how Erza mentioned it when she stopped Natsu and Gray... it kinda loses some meaning.

5. Wahl: Seems like Magic Barrier Particles are only effective when they need to be.
Is that enough? Sorry, but the Alvarez Arc was the worst Arc of Fairy Tail.
I do understand how people can view the defeats of the Spriggans as "BS" and that it could have been handled better but at the same time it isn't nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. Every Spriggan apart from Wahl, Neinhart, Brandish and God Serena was taken on by more than one wizard.

Jacob: Natsu and Lucy
Dimaria: Wendy, Chelia and Ultear
Bloodman: Gajeel and Levy
Larcade: Sting, Rogue and Kagura
August: Gildarts and Cana
Irene: Erza and Wendy
Invel: Gray and Juvia
In a series which revolves around friendship it's good that Mashima emphasised on this by having a majority of the Spriggans require teamwork and strategy to be taken down.
But I admit that some of the defeats were a bit iffy.
With Ultear saving Chelia and Wendy from Dimaria and providing third origin. Some of that could've been explained better
Gajeel eating magic barrier particles because of the carbon that is supposedly in them seemed a bit tacked on.

But then again there are some clear reasons as to why other Spriggans were defeated
Laxus using runes that he learned from Freed to trick Wahl into disposing of the magic barrier particles within him (This only ruined by the poorly explained red lightning)
Invel and Neinhart suffering from absurdly powerful magic, but weak when said magic is compromised
Lucy strategising on how to beat Jacob
And as for the three most powerful Spriggans, God Serena, Irene and August. Having God Serena be taken down by the single most powerful being in the Fairy Tail universe, and having Irene and August kill themselves. Whilst this is sitting on the fence between poor and great writing. One thing it does do very well is keep their legacy as absurdly powerful wizards cemented. August and Irene were not defeated by any protagonist and although they are now dead I personally don't think that anyone could of beaten them apart from Acnologia. And as for God Serena well that's a bit more iffy.

Zeref and Acnologia's defeats are some of the most bullshit things I've seen considering how much buildup they had as the end game villains. Hiro lost his way after Rave Master Fairy Tail is a burning pile of cow manure in comparison.
I gotta say I think August’s story is heartbreaking like his father and mother never knew they had a son and he knew the whole time it’s tear jerking when you think about it

Now in the show it just shows they kissed but uh, that's not all that happened. Mavis died because Zeref's curse killed her.

The most accurate thing is the Power of Love... We all know that zeref has been cursed by ankhseram by trying to bringnthe death to life, that's why he holds the curse of contradiction and Mavis has been cursed by using tha Forbidden magic Law... Later on Mavis revealed that they've been stucked with their lives, because zerefs love has dought or not strong enough to take Mavis's life. Meaning the Curse end, because they bought loved each other and their curses takes both of their life.

It speaks volumes about Gildart's wisdom and perception, not just his power, that he is the only one who recognizes that August stopped his spell willingly based on something he saw. That realization also shocked him, which in turn speaks to his compassion and kindness. He must have instantly figured out that whatever August saw was so important that he gave up his life without finishing his attack, which previously seemed so important. Even Mavis was clueless about that which makes it all the more tragic, seeing how August was her abandoned son. His story is one of the most tragic in the entire series.

He also was a 80-90+ year old virgin. Lacarde’s Pleasure Magic had no effect on him. And when used over large areas it effects indiscriminately. His loveless childhood spiraled into his adult life.

I interpret his words "why was his majesty's child not loved?" more general. He was never loved in his entire life. The closest thing to love he got was "friendship" with Branshish. I assume he was somehow cursed because of being a child of two cursed people. The Contradictory Curse means you kill when you care. So a child loved by parents with such curse would immediately die if they were close. He could die even earlier in his mothers womb. Only if August was cursed, that he can't be loved by anyone, he would be immune to Ankhseram black magic. It explains why Precht abandoned him and why he was 90 years old virgin despite high status and power that would attract many ladies.

He said it himself, when he was battling Jellal, that the only person who can stop him, is his mother. He remained undefeated, and in the end stoped his spell because he saw his mother, rather nice way to go, no bullshit friendship etc.

@@twisted4534 it’s not really said but I think it was because zeref’s curse where whatever he shows affection towards dies so if zeref showed affection towards august, august would’ve died august knew so he probably decided it was best to not tell zeref. August never told mavis because he never met her until he died

August was one of the best fairy tail villains ever. His death after seeing Mavis was phenomenally done. Even cooler that we got to finally see Gildarts go “all-out”

August and Irene are my favourite villains in the whole Fairytail Franchise, I felt so bad for August mann😭😭🤧I really wanted to see a scene with him and Mavis. And don’t even get me started with Erza and Irene😭. When Irene died I felt so sad and then Acnologia had the audacity to ruin her dead body, nahhh I felt disgusted at that scene🤢🤕. The way he ripped it her up nahhh😭

Gildarts is truly badass; not only is he incredibly powerful but also incredibly smart.
I wonder if August remembers all the spells he copies and can use them later, if he remembers just some of them or if he forgets them after a certain time.
he doesn't forget them, maybe since he has a lot he forgets some, but he'll probably have a magic for that as well, memory magic or something like that dude from sabertooth
Damn, the last thing August saw before he died was his mother turning her back on him. Hits you right in the feels.
August knew that his mother Mavis didn’t know she had a child / son so can’t be helped.
Everything else aside, the background story of August hits me in the heart, I think most of us assumed that it’s Larcade - understandably, he looks so similar to Natsu and Zeref, also has the name Dragneel. The revelation it’s August shocked me and the way he perished hits my heart. I read the manga first, when August said the only one that can beat him is probably his mother, I expected Mavis having to use a spell to finish him off. But it ended waaaay different than that. Later I thought, why did I even think of that it was stupid. August’s end was actually very touching, it proved how in-depth his feelings are, deep down, he was always a child longing for his parents’ love. I honestly love how it ended, a nice touch than the usually style of final-ultimate spell beatdown.
Sloppy animation whatsoever I don’t care! I’m grateful that it’s animated at all! Some mangas are good yet they couldn’t even thoroughly be animated, it’s sad.

I really love August, and looked forward to see him fight for years. The build up for his character was insane. Rumored as The "King of magic, The calamity, the strongest mage" and the fact that People in Alverez pray during the month of August, i mena the hype for this dude was insane, his magic was insane, his story was insaner! 😂
One thing i dislike about this all is that i wished we seen more of him. Would have loved a fight between him and several characters, like Makarov, laxus and gildarts. That would have been so cool, the 3 strongest members fighting the Calamity!
Except makarov isnt really one of the strongest fairy tail members, he's still strong around wizard saint level but natsu, gray and erza are stronger
Literal facts bro. The hype for the Spriggan 12 was insane. Remember the hype for that green haired girl in Lucy's bathtub? Her introduction "Fairy Tail lost the moment I arrived on this continent" when she was introduced. Bruh It was mind-blowing back in the day. If they lived up to the hype, many of them would be raid bosses and Fairy Tail never couldve won.
But the hype for August? Bruhhhh, people of his team were already hyped to high heaven, but AUGUST, the hype for this character was in whole new, ENTIRELY DIFFERENT TIER altogether. And that's really saying something . If it wasn't for this tragic, peak backstory, I'd be mad we never got to see the King of Magic go all out.

オーガストは「もしもおぬしの目の前でワシがカナを殺したらおぬしはどんな顔をするのかね？」と挑発して其れに乗ったギルダーツは冷静さを失って感情的に怒ってもカナは冷静さを失わずに戦いましたし、オーガストは道具を使わないアビリティ系の魔法はコピーして反射出来ても道具を使うホルダー系の魔法はコピー出来ないのが弱点と見抜いたギルダーツも凄いですね。

The duality of Irene and August are interesting. Irene was the mother of Erza while August was the son of Mavis and Zeref. Both ended up in the same place and had titles that had actual monarch titles in them, Irene, the Dragon Queen and August, the Wizard King. Both were also seen as the strongest of the 12. Both of them killed themselves as well, as their personal limits were similar. Whereas Irene didn't want to kill her daughter, August didn't want to kill his mother. The only thing is Irene ended up getting part of she wanted in the end, but August got nothing.

I really wish this fight had more displays of magical power and destruction. A fight involving 2 of the most power wizards in the series needed to have an appropriate level of epicness (erza vs her mother was a great example). The only epic part was when august just shrugged of fairy glitter.

With him vs God Serena being an example. I would've liked to see that fight start to finish
Some motivation: August may not have got the parental love which he wanted so badly.. But look at the bright side... He became the strongest wizard the world has ever seen... He became the calamity if only his emotions didnt get the best of him, he would have destroyed the whole mankind.... If life takes something precious it gives you something big, thats the story of August

I always found it crazy how lucy could have stood a chance against august since he can't copy holder magic which is the main part of celestial magic (things like urano metria arent holder type spells). Granted at this point he would still absolutely body her power wise but the fact she had a better chance than practically all the other members is so crazy

It is an overwhelming feeling, it took me 20 years to be reunited with mi mother again, the moment I saw her, was like I was 6 years old boy again, my eyes dropped tears and the feeling to hug her was impossible to stop. Poor August 😢
The more I look at it, Cana and August are really similar.
The only difference is that August didn't have anyone like Lucy to encourage him to tell his dad who he was, Cana did and she did tell her father but August was never able to that hurts ngl 😥
In a sense, it's better that he never told his father. If Zeref knew, he'd start feeling affection for his child, and August was at risk of dying. He knew that, kinda. But because he never felt the love of a parent, it was still confusing to him as to how Zeref couldn't realize himself that he had a child, and that child was by his side the whole time. That's very deep and complex, and it makes us realize how the love of a parent - or lack thereof - can affect someone's thought process and point of view on life itself.

Without the strongest plot armor I've ever seen in anime, Fairy Tail and the allies should have been totaly obliterated by Alvarez, without them losing a single member. They jut won because of the script. In terms of skill and magical power, they were billions of light years away.
Freyja Njordsdottir for the top tiers (august, Irene, larcade and dimaria) I agree. But not the rest. Gildarts is incredibly powerful and I can definitely see him and laxus taking on spriggans.
Natsu too since he trained to fight zeref so it would make sense for him to be strong.
And spriggan like neinhart and Jacob weren’t even that strong just haxed. I mean look at neinhart he’s a literal glass canon. I get the other spriggan though to an extent.

Him standing on the cathedral is one of the only FT Final Season moments where I felt the animation team did good and made the moment feel cool
Also the fight had pretty good animation compared to most of the other fights
Since I had read Fairy tail until the ending, August became my favorite character. My 2nd fav is Archnologia. The sad part is that Zeref and Mavis have never noticed August was their son until they died. August, he did and gave everything of his entire life for his dad Zelef, even though he wouldn't be rewarded

Best twist ever was how we all thought Larcade was Zeref and Mavis's kid but it was August all along
Weird how no one ever mentions the plot parallels here between Cana and August. They both sought out their unknowing parents and join their guilds but one just ended up old without ever saying a word while the other finally told her father and it ended up being the reason later on Gildarts was able to find out August’s weakness to holder magic. Then August decides to end everyone but as soon as he sees his own parent again he gives himself up for her.
Despite August being one of the most powerful wizards ever lived, he was still a human who yearned parental love. 😢

There was an article I read, that After how dark and emotional the Tartaros arc was, they wanted to end it on a happy note. It’s true that with this season I feel liked they rushed it and it lacked the animation and emotional story we usually get. This fight was probably the best animated. Dragon Cry was how Hiro Mashima originally wanted to end the series and I love that movie. I have high hopes for the 100 year quest arc.
