    Great video, Mark. You can tell you have taught this previously. As a young rider, I was a young dumb and full of ... type. Jeans, t-shirt, and speed. You can bet I paid for that. 75mph in a 30mph over a humpback bridge. Landed, and a truck was coming out of a turning. With the gear I was in and the skid marks on the road, the Police said at impact I was travelling 75mph. The only thing that saved my life was a full faced helmet. The helmet broke my collar bone. My bones were sticking out of my lower leg, I should have just dropped the bike, I should have, I hit the truck side on and my right femur broke in 2 places, tib & fib outside my jeans, left collar bone and right wrist broken. Spent 10 years in and out of surgery. It was totally my fault. The Police could have thrown the book at me, but as I was expected to lose my leg, they just didn't prosecute. That was at 19 in the RAF. The rest of my biking career had been all covered up head to foot. Way back then, you got a license and rode. That was it. They are better now. That crash was on a Yamaha RD250LC liquid cooled. Beautiful bike. It only lasted 3 months. Later in life, I bought a Kawasaki 750 shaft drive. A real workhorse of a bike. Amanda won't let me have a bike. It isn't so much me anymore it's other road users. But we did ride a Harley Fat Boy in Hawaii. That was a bucket list one for me. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and experience, Mark. By the way, I've still got the leg. 1 1/2in shorter, but it's still there. Thanks for sharing, and I hope my tale might reinforce how stupid it is to not ride or be clothed correctly.

      Wow Chris, that’s one heck of a story. I’m sure it would’ve killed a normal man. Having one leg longer than the other can be a plus when walking along a steep hillside. LOL

      @MarkKratzMC as long as I keep the sort one to the hill I'm fine 🙂

    Great info. On more than just a local ride, I carried a soft-sided cooler strapped to my pax foot platform with a gallon container of ice water with a Camelback tube led up through the belt of my riding jacket. A refreshing cold drink was always available, which makes staying hydrated much easier. I'm a full believer in ATGAT (All the gear, all the time.) and have followed that even across hot desert segments of a trip. Having good vents / airflow thru my jacket / helmet made a huge difference in comfort.

    Lots of great information Mark… we always filled our yetis with ice and water on our trips at every stop and made sure we drink.. and we were in some pretty hot temperatures out Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and South Dakota.

      During one rally it was 118° in Utah. I had to go to promontory point to take a picture of the sign where the last spike was driven on the transcontinental Rail line. My kickstand sunk about an inch into the asphalt pavement. I had my debit card in my tank bag. When I went to my next fuel stop, my debit card was warped. Thanks for watching brother. Much appreciated.

    Croc's and shorts are not good summertime biking wear. But you see them every day. Swamp cooler for your brain with that helmet liner. Thank you for showing your riding gear to us, Mark. Stay safe and stay cool

      In India, they actually sell sandals for motorcycle riding. I am known amongst my friends about going on a diatribe regarding society whose primary footwear are sandals. Thanks for watching my friend.

    Hey, "007" 😎💖
    This is a great presentation. Valuable information about safety and how to "arm" your self; when riding a 2-wheeled steel horse; while moving at 90mph.
    Smart stuff! 👍

    My grandfather rode a Harley, over in France during WW2 ; and was good buds with Patton himself. He wrote a book about his time served there.
    "The War I Never Fought" by Henry Clark Jr. Sold at Barnes and Noble bookstores. Do you suppose I should read that one on the channel someday? 🤔

      That’s awesome about your grandfather. Yes please I would like to hear that book. 90 MPH! In 2010 I set an unofficial speed record on the Bonneville salt flats. But that’s another story.

      I had to interview a lot of motorcyclist in emergency rooms who had abrasions from sliding on the asphalt. They are treated as a burn. I watched the ER personnel, scrub the wound with a brush to remove the debris from the road. It was one of those, better you than me moments. I hope you are staying cool. I went in my shop yesterday and it was 115° inside. After about an hour I was toast. Thanks for watching.

    Hey Mark- this is great information. Brought back memories of my dad's motorcycle days. Good to know all the purpose for all the clothing. Yes sweat is your friend. The jacket that acts like an armor on impact is a great investment. Good to know you do all you can to stay safe out there.

    Great information Mark! I was always a low budget rider and wore denim jacket in the summer. I see you said never wear blue jeans - I am guessing because they provide no real protection in a skid. Looking back - it was pretty dumb of me. Carhart bids and jacket in winter and denim jacket in summer. The Hot never really bugged me to much (I drove from Fredericksburg VA to Washington DC daily). Look forward to your winter tips.

    • @MarkKratzMC
      @MarkKratzMC  ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeans usually fit close to the skin so transfer heat from the sun directly to your skin, since there is no air space. They say it’s the sudden stop that kills you. Motorcycle clothing like leather and the weaved nylon allow you to slide across the pavement, dissipating energy over time. Jeans will typically catch the pavement and rip. The friction if the material doesn’t tear can cause friction burns.

    From what I understand caffeine drinks have no hydration value to it either

    • @MarkKratzMC
      @MarkKratzMC  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes anything with caffeine is in a diuretic. One of the beginning signs of dehydration coloration of the urine. The darker it is the more minerals and electrolytes you were losing. Thanks for watching Jeff.
