    A lot of people probably think you're exaggerating when you say you've seen the movie 50+ times with your kid, but as a parent I want to assure y'all that it's not an exaggeration. When a kid gets hooked they may watch a movie 2-5 times a day. Two weeks in and you've had it in the background 59+ times.

      I was hooked on this dinosaur movie with a triceratop, I can't remember the name of it (if you know it please tell me) it had "realistic" CGI with a voice over, and there was this love triangle with mutual pining...a weakling verse alpha going on, and the main pro had a hole in his head crown thing. I would watch it over and over and I loved every minute of it 😭
      Edit: thank you for those to told me the movie, went to check out the trailer and honestly I've seen animal voice overs on Vine (rip) that was better

    Regarding the road and the bridge, my interpretation is that Luisa is re-arranging the town for the wedding. That's why she's moving the church to a more central location, that's why she's diverting the river and moving the bridge because she diverted the river and now it flows on a new path, thus needed her to move the existing bridge to a new location.

      I love this theory and hate that I can't believe it :(. But my reasoning that it can't be true is that even though everybody *knows* that Isabela and Mariano are set to be married, Mariano hasn't actually asked Isabela at that point. It would be super presumptuous to prepare for a wedding before the proposal has happened and was accepted and it's not like Luisa was subtle about what she was doing. I don't think Alma would have allowed it because it would have made the family lose face because of the presumptuousness.

    One thing I heard is that Encanto’s plot, at least one of the early drafts, was originally going to be a “journey” set plot were the main cast would leave Encanto and into the modern world. With a show confirmed to be in the making, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if that original plot would be the basis for it, and if it is, it would be a solution to this issue.

    1:40 Casita fixed itself. Casita's "health" is determined by the general mental/emotional state of Abuela/Mirabel, so, I don't really know exactly what counts as "bad enough mental health for Casita to be cracking" vs "good enough mental health for Casita to be cracking," but I think maybe just the fact that Mirabel was, at that point, distracted by the cracks rather than focusing on her internal depression (or whatever you want to call it) may have been sufficient for the cracks to go away.

    About the first cracks: they reflect a broken home due to the members being treated as magical tools more than actual family. The moment following it Alma listened to her granddaughter and was willing to solve the problem she saw - that moment of trust made the cracks shallower enough to not be visible anymore for the moment
    Also it is revealed that there ARE people that come from out of town. Like, you do realize roads are still a thing in this timeline, right? Or you could just...hike the mountains. Which yes, is a lot of walking. But not impossible. Or Luisa could move them, which she says she can do in Surface Pressure. Heck, the kids didn't even know who the family was at first, which hints that they and their family aren't originally from there. I mean look at how diverse that place is

    • @0CaptainZer0
      @0CaptainZer0 2 ปีที่แล้ว +97

      The kids didn't know about the family because they haven't been to a ceremony yet. They knew *about* the family but didn't know names or powers yet as they're too young. Their parents probably told them that day being like, "We're gonna go watch a kid gain powers. It's called a gift." That's why they ask about Antonio's gift.

    On the cracks appearing the first time: there’s a theory that Mirabel is somehow intricately linked to the magic, hence why she never got a door till the end of the movie.
    To support this, think about what took place shortly before the cracks appeared the first time: Mirabel feeling hopeless, shown by the line “am I too late for a miracle?” At the end of her song.
    This theme of Mirabel losing hope being tied to the cracks is shown again when Abuella starts verbally attacking Mirabel later and even during the initial dinner scene too, as Mirabel seems to be struggling to hold on to having hope but once Abuella, who always assumes Mirabel is useless or in the way due to her not having a gift, sees the prophecy, her mind automatically went to feeling dejected and hopeless.

      Well, historically, people have difficulty moving large armies over mountain ranges, so it would actually be a VERY effective defense method. Besides, we see that the enemy soldiers are riding horses and using primitive guns, so they probably believe in witchcraft. The sight of a bunch of mountains popping out of thin air after a cloaked woman places a candle on the ground would probably be enough to ward them away. The tiny amount of people moving in in are probably very adventurous people that aren't afraid of witchcraft.

    One big flaw in this theory: despite starting with so few people they started with large amounts of diversity. Naturally, there would of been a mix of Native and Spanish genetics, and then there was also African genetic citizens as well. This makes it so there are large amounts of dominant genes to start that would combat any defective recessive.
    This also might be the reason for the ununiform studies for what a stable gene pool would need to be to start. Start with a bunch of similar people the you'll need to start with more, but if you have a heavily diverse pop you can start with less. And the Encanto starts with a fairly diverse population.
    So, you might need to get Austin back on the program to get more variables in there to included the amount of diversity that 3 genetic regions could have.
    Also, this would actually be a break through in considering a unifying formula to genetic diversity of small populations. So, definitely a worth while goal if nothing else. And maybe a revisit to other movies with small and/or devastated populations like Raya, Dragon's, and even Brave (considering the lack of diversity of those small populations)... Oh god, Hiccup is inbred...

    This reminds me, I've been re-thinking your "Dolores being evil" thing from a while ago and I think there's 1 thing that throws a wrench in it. Dolores' little squeaks. In a supercut video of her doing those cute little squeaks someone in the comment section said that that is something some Colombian people do when at a state of unease. Knowing that, think about each time Dolores squeaked. 1st time was telling those kids that Mirabel doesn't have a gift which is a touchy subject, 2nd time is her telling Mirabel about Luisas' twitchy eye which involves the magic fading out, an even more touchy subject. Times 3 and 4 both happen when she over hears that Mirabel found Brunos' lost vision, what it's about and her and Agustin saying to keep it on the down low. On the one hand she can't say anything about Bruno because of her mom Pepa holding a salty grudge on the guy for causing her wedding to become a mess. On the other hand Dolores is Almas' little stool pigeon and has to tell her everything of major importance. Then there's the long drawn out squeal she dose during the dinner with her being all "I must say something" and Mirabel staring at her all "Don't you bloody dare". Basically Dolores might've been under the heel of keeping up appearances like everyone else.

    This actually works really well with my analysis that the breaking point for the house WAS the marriage, because Isa didn't love Mariano and Casita would not stand for the next generation of Madrigals to be raised in a loveless marriage. It had to be arranged carefully to hold off inbreeding, but it wouldn't be an emotionally healthy environment for children; so Casita just hit reboot on the whole thing to prevent generational disaster.

    Patron in the concept of warlocks as she is the next replacement for the candle so too is she tied to the magic of the house.

    My headcanon is that when Mirabel saw the cracks Bruno started patching up the wall cracks and this gesture is what allows casita to magically fix the remaining cracks. Casita was relieved that Bruno was helping the family so that temporarily strengthened the magic.

      yea but the cracks on the inside are just metaphors for Mirabel feeling broken on the inside. Casita is meant to represent Mirabel's mental state. The tweet you posted in 3:10 only states they family lives there, and THEY haven't left, not that no one has come in. Even if no one is coming in, a population of 50 is all that's needed to prevent inbreeding, and 500 will prevent genetic drift.

    I want to know how you defined “inbreeding” in this scenario. Are you considering it as any relation such as fourth or fifth cousins which probably have little impact on genetic diversity. Third cousins? Second? First? What are the parameters here?

    • @bboops23
      @bboops23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      It has little impact at first however long term it could and likely would cause issues. In the game Crusader Kings 2 there's a genetic trait for inbred and one generation of marrying a cousin may not cause an issue. But several generations can. My husband and I had a run where after 12 generations we had an inbred child show up despite never allowing closer than 3rd or 4th cousins to marry. But our run involved his character being the leige and my character being a powerful vassal. So we regularly arranged marriages. Twelve generations while marrying other people and a 3rd/4th cousin every other generation but also other people are marrying 3rd/4th cousins adds up. Usually the rule I've heard is distant relatives are fine once in a while, but regularly it can still create long-term issues and that is in fact how it worked for most royalty that was inbred

      @liamnehren1054 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      also there is the fact that minor inbreeding like 1 here 1 there has little effect in the long run. if they cranked their numbers as high as possible they could probably split into various villages and mildly inbreed and have a few members switch places every few years and while causing a little damage at first reach a population where they can slowly heal it.

    • @bboops23
      @bboops23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@liamnehren1054 that's usually what larger models do. Typically a starting number of 50 is good to prevent inbreeding for 3-4 generations until more people are brought in. But with only 50ish to start, while they may not see any issues even in 6 generations, if that starting population stayed exactly the same and the Encanto never broke open, it could potentially result in a population with a severe case of "Founders Disease," the catch-all name for a trait that is super common due to a small initial breeding pool and everyone being essentially related. With enough time the population usually diversifies with genetic mutation. But the problem with most models is how much time is needed? We don't actually know. What if Augustin's allergy is passed down to a large swath of the population. Maybe it won't happen immediately but it could happen in a few generations and suddenly half the Encanto is deathly allergic to bee stings.

      Maybe in the next movie that'll change. The magic was destroyed for a short time so maybe there's now an opening for people on the outside to move in or for the townspeople to finally travel and see the rest of the world after such a long time. There's gotta be some people who want to see what's out there but probably plenty of elders like Alma who are still traumatized by the events of the past who'd want everyone to stay in the town where its safe.

    There would be no chance of inbreeding within Encanto. The first example is in the case of the Madrigal family since Félix and Agustín are clearly foreign inhabitants. Félix, due to his attire (Guayabera shirt, brown pants), is a person from the Colombian Caribbean region, from one of the important cities in that region (Santa Marta, Barranquilla or Cartagena), while Agustín is from Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, since he wears the “Cachaco” attire (striped cloth pants, vest, shirt and tie), which was characteristic for Bogotanos in the 1950s.

In that moment she feel abandoned and disconnected from her relatives but, the moment she realizes something is going wrong, her naturally caring nature takes over, "reconnecting" her. Because she deeply care about her family, despite everything.

    1:40 yes, I think Casita did fix itself and it does have the ability to do so, but it's mostly connected to the feelings of Mira (and maybe even Abuela). during the scene where Isa and Mira are singing What Else Can I Do, at the part where they stood in front of the candle and Isa hugs Mira, the cracks started to vanish (probably because Mira is happier being reconciled with her sister) so yeah, it's definitely not Bruno who did the fixing.

      It's reasonable. Pepa is Bruno's sister. She must have seen when the ritual of receiving a gift failed with Mirabel and how her brother had to leave Casita.

    i have an Enconto theory, what if Mirabell and Alma got a gift but we had just ignored it. In the movie after Antonio had gotten his gift Mirabell had STOPED TIME(or at least slowed it down) and at the end of the movie Alma had TELEPORTED Mirabell INTO A FLASH BACK. And everyone had skipped over those details probably thinking "oh ok, well thats normal"

    About the cracks , Antonio's room looks like its easily multiple acres, so I assumed it would take a hot minute for mirabel run into the center of it to get a Abuela, and then lead everyone out (it doesnt look like anyone was running when we get out there) so I assumed it was enough time for bruno (sorry, Hernando) to patch it up with casita's help.

    4:05 I would like to strongly emphasize that it was mainly the Spanish Habsburgs who relied on inbreeding.
    The Austrian Habsburgs married all over the world to gain territory. Hence the state motto.
    "Bella gerant alii, tu felix Austria nube." - "Others may wage wars, you, fortunate (happy) Austria, marry."

    Technically they are only 1 generation at-least for the Madrigals, seeing your counting Alma and the Triplets who were born before the Encanto was created, and the Grandkids are the first generation born in the Encanto area, as for the rest of the village thats its own thing... There were some adults but also some children aswell in the group when travelling.

    the thing about that first set of cracks is that yes they were indeed real. we see the same thing occur in the song sequence with isabela and mirabel where the cracks seal up when they finally see eye to eye and get along. my personal theory on why only mirabel saw the first major set of cracks was because she was alone and the house trusted her to see the truth but hid it all again when the rest of the 'happy' family showed up. kind of like we hide our own little cracks in our lives until we find that one person or group who we can open up to. and we already kind of get the idea that mirabel gets along better with the house than anyone else since shes had to go roomless all her life and casita was her only constant companion (since we know it cant reach the other family members besides the grandma in their magic rooms). so its not much of a stretch that mirabel loves and appreciates the house more than the others and is willing to pay attention when it needs help too.

    Recently I've really enjoyed a small dystopian short film series by the name of Autodale. I think there is tons of potential for Film Theory to find out more about this world and would be a nice interlude while some other movies come out rather than having to do the same movies again and again. I think almost all of these videos are great but, I'm sure from a creative perspective doing the same movies can be a bit of a burn out. So I encourage MatPat and the Film Theorist's amazing minds to give Autodale a quick look to see if there is theory potential. I would love to see it if you do!
