I owned a GTO, Japanese import, that was a very special thing, mine was the N/A not the turbo version but for British roads it was enough to put a big smile on your face.
Iam building a 97 2dr mirage that's been in my family since 1997. 1.8 n/a 5sp. Now it's a 2.4 4g64 swapped with sohc and still 5sp manual. Didn't get any awd Mitsubishi in the US to really have an evo clone. But I still have dreams of making it happen
I was about to mention that the Starion was one of the most interesting cars Mitsubishi brought out. Along with the first and second gen Eclipse which is a cheap but reliable, sporty looking cars from Mitsubishi....
I’m glad someone brought up the Starion. What an absolutely beautiful vehicle. One of my all time favorite Mitsubishis. It was an iconic Japanese design right up there with the Subaru XT & Isuzu Impulse.
The 1980 Lancer Turbo was part of a lineup where they had turbocharged versions of every single model they sold (Colt, Lancer, Cordia, Tredia, Galant, Sapporo).
Mitsubishi is my favourite manufacturer, I just feel the 90s styling was absolutely spot on and ahead of its time. Engineering is absolutely bulletproof. I currently own a 99 Evo 6 GSR in Pyrenees Black. And I used to have a 96 Pajero LWB Exceed 2. I'd really like a 24v Galant. Infact I'd be happy to own any 80s/90s Mitsubishi. I feel the Renault-Nissan alliance was Mitsubishis downfall. Using the parts bin of decades old Renault and Nissan baked bean tin gearboxes. I'm not surprised Mitsubishi pulled out of Europe.
My mum had a Colt Galant GTO GSR back when they first came out. Now she drives a year 2000 Galant V6 Elegance saloon. I absolutely love that Galant and have always wanted to get my hands on the Japanese VR-4 version with the twin turbo V6 and 4 wheel drive! 😊
I had a '79 Plymouth Arrow which is basically the same as a Celeste but with a less stylish front grill and rear lights. It was so reliable. I liked the way it looked too and put some big fat tires on it. Apparently, some people liked to modify them into dragsters.
Bob Glidden, who spent almost all of his career in Fords, dominated the 1979 NHRA Pro Stock season in an Arrow after Ford declined to provide more funding for the Fairmont Futura he had run in '78. Unsurprisingly, Dearborn reversed its stance for 1980 and he was back in the Fairmont.
Outstanding… another fellow Arrow owner! I had a 1979 as well. It was like a metallic root beer brown with wide, dual white, stripes down the side… a GS, I think? A great car. Very reliable & well built. And man could you rap that engine out with the 5-speed.
I’m lucky enough to have a red Tommi mak , I had the first 6 in the country back in 1999 kept in for 7 years then got tommi 😊they are phenomenally fun cars that still surprise people on the track be them some 20 years older even in stock trim 🎉
I absolutely love my Lancer. I'm sad I'll never get another one, but I'm glad I finally got to own a piece of a car company that I've loved for my entire adult life.
I've owned a 2011 evo x gsr for 7 years and have loved every second of it. It's actually reliable it allows you to drive like a super hero and you can drive it in any weather.
Mitsubishi were a powerhouse back then. I love the Australian built Mitsubishi Magna (based on the Diamante). I own a rare Ralliart version which is 1 or 500 numbered cars made for Australia and New Zealand only
Anyone remember that the first of the 3000GTs arrived at the UK Motor Show in Birmingham and were promptly nicked! They were so rare they were impossible to sell on - or is this just an urban myth? Also, the flight to Rotterdam in Holland and back to drive my new EVO VI GSR around a car park to satisfy the SUV regulations for the first batch of factory imports (No 302 of 500). However, when it arrived at the UK the keys were handed to me by Tommi Makinen, Sven Smeets and Freddy Loix. Biggest regret was selling the VI though I had done over 120,000 miles in it, actual distance is a guess as the Km to Miles converter module failed for about 20,000 miles (apparently a common fault). Quite proud that I only replaced the clutch twice. Still have an EVO X FQ360 though. Most underrated Mitsubishi - 1.6 Space Star. Sliding rear seats a great idea and surprisingly great fun on the limit. Still own one from new which has driven all over the UK and Ireland. Who remembers the Ralliart Space Wagon built as a one off with EVO mechanicals that appeared at the 1997 Network Q RAC Rally at Cheltenham?
Mitsubishi did make some wonderful cars. The Evo bloodline is one of the most loved of them all. The Pajero was a Paris Dakkar lengend. As a current and original owner of a white Tommi Makinen Edition here in Aus for 20 years, I'll say one thing, that little 20 year old car can seriously embarrass much more modern performance cars. I remember when I bought it, I thought I'd have some fun and drag race it. 12.4 sec ET quarter mile and a 0-100 of 4.3 seconds averaged with two opposing runs. That's from a completely standard car. I never modified it as I could never reach the limit driving it as I ran out of talent lol. Wicked car that to this day is deeply awesome...and turns a lot of heads when out on the road. My daily drive is a Legnum VR-4. A car that noone notices but has surprised many with it's comfort, handling and sheer outright speed. Awesome cars. Can't get enough of Mitsubishi. For a company that's motoring arm is quite small, they created some amazing products... not bad for a company that builds aircraft and nuclear reactors lol.
In 2006 I bought a Japanese import 1992 GTO (3000GT) but not really a 3000 GT, because it was non turbo and limited to 112MPH. It did however have four wheel steering and handled well; it was also red and looked great. I purchased a derestriction chip to increase the top speed to 140MPH, so it was not at all shabby. I was in my late fourties at the time, so looking back, I guess it was my midlife crisis car. Afterwards, I bought the E34 BMW M5 shown on my channel. Much more sensible :)
@@paulhart7585 personal preference, no? I grew up watching rally and playing rally games, and the E6.5 was always my fave.. But yeah, the E9 is better in every way.

Have a gto tt, wanted one sice is was 10. Not regretted a second of it. Sont forget that the milti fin turbo innovation that everyone enjoys more power with was developed by mitsubishi
I think the mitsubishi eclipse 1st and 2nd gen should have been on the list before the 3000gt because of how influential they were and also being 4g63t evo awd powered.
GTO twin turbo is so underrated, yes it's big and heavy but there's nothing quite like being behind the wheel and looking down the long bonnet at those amazing muscular bonnet bulges, the way it raises as you floor it, the sound of those two turbos spooling and that deep V6 bellow ... absolutely LOVED mine and I will always regret selling it 😢 was running 450bhp but because I had no taste it was on 17" three spoke advan wheel 😅😬 sold it to get a more "sensible" car like a complete idiot, for a pittance as well ffs.
I miss Mitsubishi, as in the old school Mitsubishi that focused on road and off road performance instead of trying to compete for the soccer mom market. This is especially true in the US Market where we can't get the Pajero, Pajero Sport, Triton, and Van.
My favorite Colt version is the Plymouth Sapporo, I remember looking at full sized Chryslers with my father almost 50 years ago and being struck by the looks of the little car.
I faintly remember hearing about a stunningly nutty JDM version of the original shape Shogun/Pajero that was a SWB possibly Paris/Dakar(?) special edition with around 300bhp (the usual for the time restricted to 276ish bhp Japanese agreement that all the performance cars were restricted too during the 90s. The current range topping Skyline GTRs, Supra twin turbos, Evos n Scoobies, RX7 twin turbo, Chasers etc) I normally detest SUVs but this mad, special bubble arched, SWB Shogun looked absolutely mental! It looked like a jacked up Group B racer!
Didn't know about it until recently, it was called the Pajero Evolution! Amazing car especially with its history in Dakar. Mitsubishi ruled the 90s in rally with 2 different production vehicles. Absolutely bonkers
I have a Australian made Mitsubishi express van 5 speed manual 4G64 2.4l that I have spent $8000 on a turbo, parts and haltech computer. Going to make around 450hp in a van...
Can’t believe you covered the Celeste but skipped the VR4 and Starion. Both of these models had significant Motorsport success and were (are) great cars.
You missed the Galant VR4, Eclipse, and Starion! Also, the culmination of the Evo was the IX. The X is a nice sedan, but the only thing it shares with other Evos is branding.
"Mitsubishi waved adios to europe", umm but I can still buy a mitsubishi if I wanted to here in germany? They didn't stop selling cars in europe plus they announced new cars like a new colt as well?
Personally, I would have scrapped those first entries from the 70s in favor of the second gen Eclipse GSX and either the FTO GPX, the Lancer 1600 GSR or the Galant VR4

I would love to own one. There's one in MO rn that I'm trying to buy but it has a lot of miles on it.

Mitsubishi has a lot of really interesting cars. The Starion is one I think doesn't get enough love. Such a cool 80s design!

the EVO 5 (V) is an all time favourite of mine 👌 the goldilocks of the EVO series in my opinion... Perfect mix of style, performance and pedigree
My Evo 6 smashes all Evo's 😎
