Its an art contest. Not an AI art contest. What fun is there in collecting cards if all is AI generated. Would not be worth my money in my eyes. Same with content. They could pick different Pokémon next year. Off course Pikachu and Eevee are easy to generate. They should have known this would happen.
Exactly! They have so much artwork to pull from when generating an image. I agree too that collecting these cards would be almost meaningless if they are just AI generated. Might as well be random squiggles. The “awe” factor comes from how talented and creative the person who made it is. If you take that away, it’s just pretty pictures that don’t mean anything.
Here he is. There’s always one. “Up to 100k words in a prompt” . So submit it as a short story then. I’m sure it’s riveting. There’s no way we should have to call you writing a block of text to generate a picture an “artist”. Anyone who uses AI to create artwork is either not an artist, or an artist who is lazy and doesn’t want to work to get better or put the time in. Design and business use AI as a tool for saving money, but for an illustration contest, a contest to showcase artistic talent and effort, to allow Ai is insulting to all the actual artistic participants.
we will see what happens. in their statement it say "There is a limit three (3) unique Submissions per person. You may be disqualified if you submit more than three (3) Submissions". which they did more than 3. they really didnt say anything about AI. but im stil bit wondering about are they removing the person because of too many submissions? or what.
I agree, they need to update the rules officially before we can rest easily. I’m gonna be keeping a pulse on this situation, I deal with AI in my day job so this is personal for me as well.

I am glad they actually did something about this. It may be a good idea at some point to do this regular illustration contest, then have another one that anything goes as long as there is no legality issues

I agree, that Eevee artwork is adorable! I think my favorite kind of card art (not counting the crocheted ones, because I'm biased by way of being someone who crochets) was always the ones where it was a pair or group of Pokemon hanging out with friends of their kind and just exploring or doing stuff together. My favorite Scraggy card is the one where they're all running down the stairs like they just stole something, lol.
Just recently found your channel Fang! Legendary type work and mega punched the subscribe button. In this situation, I'm beyond hydro pumped to hear the outcome weighed in favor of genuine talented artists & TPCI upheld something most important over all. Integrity. Celebrating the artistic capabilities of artists whom contribute so much to this hobby to make it what it is, is 151% of the upmost importance. I think there is space for the creative aspects of Ai because admittedly, some of the outcomes from thought processes brought to life are captivating, however keeping those two categories completely separate is essential for upholding the spirit of these contests & honoring the actual physical artists. So much captivating work in this contest and I think we're all overall super content with knowing what we're looking at, is pure from equally passionate artists. Awesome of you to respectfully highlight this! Train On, Fang!

Excellent move by The Pokémon Co.
I think it could be because Vigo/Vigen pretended to be three different people, which does violates their rules of three submissions per person, but maybe they checked other factors like Ai Generation. Hopefully, in the future, the TGC will be more careful with entries and update their rules. This is an Art contest that factors talent and effort put into the artwork.
BTW We also have idiots like Verlisify defending the Ai, but then again it is Verlisify.

We don’t know for certain, but them including a note about celebrating the artists community when speaking about the rules being broken is at least promising. They are notorious for being extremely vague, so I’m keeping an eye on the entries for changes and the rules page for any additions or amendments.
But they use AI to test decks?
The contest rules did not specify that AI could not be used, ctrl f and search the rules for terms such as "AI" and "artificial intelligence" and nothing will populate.
The only remotely close rule to AI is that the participant must name the digital art program used, so it would seem as long as the digital program is named its technically not a breach of the rules.
It appears the update by the Pokemon Company isn't specifically about AI being used, but rather someone submitting more than 3 entries, which is a specific rule violation.
Ai is integrated so heavily into photoshop and adobe now that it's kinda weird where people are deciding to draw the line.
Hand & Pencil artists felt the same way when digital art first emerged, ai art is still art and requires effort, sometimes up to 100k words in a written prompt.
Even these recent updates about the contest don't specify anything about AI being disqualified, so I think you could be jumping to assumptions about it being removed.
Ai art is still art, though you may not like it. This contest, appears to permit it, its also okay not to be happy about that.
None the less ai art is a new form of art creation software and there will be space for it and people who enjoy it and use it.
What if you take an a.i. generated image and run it through another more traditional art software after for touch ups and relayerings?
Where can the lines be drawn and when can someone genuinely distinguish it was generated by ai?
To be clear I do enjoy hand drawn art far more, its more personal preference, I think people are jumping to conclusions about this ordeal that may not be accurate.
I don't think AI art is cheating, nor is it unfair, as its something everyone has access to, to fairly compete.
If it was a strictly hand drawn contest, and proof of work was required, than it would constitute cheating, but could also be more easily proven real.
Back in the day traditional artists using hand tools complained about digital artists.
Eventually digital art was accepted as art.
Now digital artists and traditional artists are complaining about ai art tools.
Essentially it's an ai art contest, but people don't want it to be.
But if its visually appealing art and it makes for great looking cards, i'm on board.
I do hope that purest get their own contests as well though.
I agree, I use AI in my daily life as a marketing Creative Director with 15 years as a designer and graphic artist. But I think the Pokémon Company acknowledges that the use of A.I. would absolutely dismantle their brand. We all collect the cards because of the talent behind each artwork and most of us know the artists by name and recognize their styles immediately. If the art on the cards is allowed to be A.I. generated, it will lose all meaning and therefore all value. The entire empire would come crashing down. At best I would consider A.I generated or assisted art as “mixed media” artwork and that should be explicitly indicated. Just like an artist would disclose their method of creation in an art gallery, it gives context for where the raw talent for painting vs compositing takes place.
The sign off about protecting the integrity of the contest and artists is signaling at least a desire to keep it authentic for the time being.
Aaaww, how cute! A Tech Bro defending art theft and comparing it to digital art, which is requiring the same basic skills as analog art and is not even close to being so cheap as using image generators... Btw. the correct term is not 'AI art'. It's Computer Rendered Artificial Picture (CRAP). Because it's not art. Art is a process. Generated images are just a result commissioned, but not done by you. If you can type in 100k words, you're better off putting that energy into learning art. Because if image generators do evolve into real AI one day, you're basically worthless. Also, considering what happened with Adobe lately, it might drive away people from using Photoshop. But honestly, there are some very good alternatives and I'm glad I stopped using Photoshop years ago.
Edit: I forgot: you might be right about the disqualification, though. It doesn't sound exactly like they were disqualified because of cheating with image generators, but because of cheating regarding their names. But the part with "artistic abilities" at least hints at it being also because of image generators. I really hope there will be a clause about prohibiting the use of image generators in the future. It might have been because of legal issues (just my guess; I'm not a lawyer). There was a convention that unintentionally let an artist be in their artist alley. They couldn't do much about it at first, because their rules said nothing about genAI being prohibited. When we found out that the person also stole artworks, it was possible for the convention staff to ban them. Now many conventions have clauses about prohibiting AI image generators.

@@naturesepyon The biggest one is still running. You might have missed that. Also, just use Google. Btw. if you take something without consent, it's theft. Just because those artworks are on the internet doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with them. If consent isn't given, you're not allowed to use the artworks. I'm sure if everything had been done differently right from the start, it wouldn't have become such a big issue. If those tech companies had worked together with artists, I'm sure this tech would be incredibly beneficial for many people. But it's not. But we're going to make it beneficial :)
