ANGRY Olive Wood! - Wood Turning

  • I cannot express how difficult this turning was. I edited out much of my moaning and groaning but I'm sure there's still plenty left in this video. The piece was hard, dry at 4% moisture content, heavy, out of balance and end-grain! It has lots of cracks and crevices, voids, holes and just nature in general. I do think it turned out pretty nice and I'm glad it's over! LOL!

Upon seeing big holes, cracks, and bumpy bark:
Everyone else: "Let's turn this until it's smooth and fill this with sparkly resin!"
Zen Master Phil: "Perfect as it is."
👍👍👍 💖💖💖 Oh, I would so like to spend time petting this bowl!
BTW, those olive pieces look almost like bone. So fine!
PS - My stepmom in Austin, TX, says a neighbor of hers sent a chunk of their tree to a gentleman in the Pacific Northwest to turn, and now we're wondering. Could that have been you? Hmm. Small world.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You are correct, Lee. It's just me, I know there are lots of turners that use carbide quite successfully. I feel like they don't allow me to feel the wood. I feel like they take the art out of turning, for me. I also feel, it's not as fun to watch. Besides, I started with carbide and fought long and hard to learn to use HSS tools and I'm going to celebrate that every chance I get! 😊 Thank you for watching and commenting!

Oh Phil, this is a beauty and chunky bowl. Ice bucket, salad bowl, vegetable server, possibly pop a top on it and make it the spare change bank. Floating candle center piece. A great base to hold a fresh, live 3' or 4' Christmas tree 🎄 or potted house plant 🌵.
If you pop a top on it with a smooth rounded 1" hole in it, anyone who knits or crotchets would love to put their ball of yarn in it so it's not tangling or rolling around the room and again, it's beautiful and heavy so it won't tip and roll over either. So many possibilities. Limited only by the imagination.

Phil I’ve learned so much from your videos. I’m a beginner turner. You have taught me so much and I thank you sincerely for that. Your presentation is so genuine and thorough. It’s like listening to a good buddy showing me in my own shop. The way you study a piece of wood to bring out its beauty is so evident. When I have questions when turning I say to myself “what would Phil do?”. You have a very artistic eye and you are such a craftsman. One question I have is what do you do with all the beautiful pieces. Regards, an ardent student of yours.

Just discovered your channel Phil. You are a very talented artist - but your commentary is second-to-none ... Literally have videos playing in background whilst working in the office.

Phil, you have a great ability to identify how to bring the beauty out of any piece of wood. Another beautiful bowl.

Beautiful absolutely beautiful. Years ago when I was a Navy Seabee, we were stationed in Rota Spain. We burned tons of olive wood in the fireplace. It is fantastic firewood, burns slowly and very hot. After seeing this bowl I’m sorry we did! Of course Spain was pretty much carpeted by Olive orchards soooooo….

Yeah, I know where it's common it makes great firewood. Just not so common around these parts, Sam!

Olive wood is one of the best pieces to turn. It has the best grain patterns. I have Mock Olive which looks the same. it's great.

It's not angry anymore. Now, thanks to you, it's a happy bowl with lots of cracks making little smiley faces. So glad you share your talent with all of us. 😊♥️🐾

Perfect. Olive wood has become my favorite on TH-cam, even though I have never turned a piece!!!!! We don't have any here in Montana. I might have to make a trip down south with an empty truck.

Olive wood is so beautiful. I had to laugh when you said it looks like a pig. I was just thinking that. I think I'll sneak over and grab a piece. Really lovely bowl.

Agreed, Suzette, I love the look of Olive. Not sure I ever want to turn another one like this, though. It was difficult! Thank you!

As always Phil, an outstanding job on another tough piece. I am putting the finish on a black cherry burl and the whole time turning it I kept thinking, what would Phil do. Hopefully I did you proud.

You know that a piece of wood is being more stubborn than necessary when Phil breaks out the carbide.
The way the sealer just turns that angry gray wood to gold is amazing.

I have very much been enjoying watching your projects over the last few weeks. I’m in my mid 60’s and watching you reminds me of my high school shop class in which I think I created some pretty nice lathe pieces.
