I live in Connecticut closer to Rhode Island and Mass and being a New Englander love clam chowda and the best way to eat a lobster roll is the buttery ones not with a mayonnaise dressing mix it loses its taste appeal - but then butter compliments any seafood 🧈👍🏻👍🏻

I love clam "chowdah" & lobster rolls. The best lobster rolls I've had are on the coast of Maine. Specifically in the small town of New Harbor. The meat was still a little warm because they cook the lobster to order!

Bostonian here. It was fun seeing some of the location shots and going “I know where that is!”
Although you were at the waterfront not downtown when having the chowder and lobster roll. And of course it was expensive at the tourist trap that is Quincy Market.

True! Deana pointed that out a couple of times. However, the Chowder was pretty good! Would you say a great lobster roll comes with the mayonaise-type lobster?

Aw wish knew you guys were coming (just discovered you this week and have been watching like crazy). I work(ed - pre virus) in the Fanueil Hall area for 8 years, right across from Quincy Market. I wouldn't recommend the market for food, but it's ok to try I guess. The Boston Public Market is the place to go plus you can buy all local goods and gifts. The price honestly wasn't that bad for the food, but there are definitely better lobster rolls out there. Never put lemon on a roll though ugghhhh. Oh and if you are offered a buttered or mayo roll, butter is not typical New England. There are other typical New England foods I'd love to see you try like baked beans and brown bread in a can, oh and maybe a fluffernutter!
Mikes Pastry vs Modern. I'd love to see your thoughts! But, better and for real late night snacks Bova which is also in the North End.

Quincy Market is a tourist trap. Don't get me wrong, I think everyone should go once because all the food choice is great. But you will pay more then you would elsewhere, even within the city. With that said, that place you went to has some great chowda! If you are looking for some good lobster rolls, head north of the city and try Rockport, Newburyport, or Ipswitch. Out of all the cities I've been to in the U.S., Boston is still my favorite and I'm glad I'm just 40 miles outside of it!

Lobster is currently exported mainly to Asia, so that the supply for the domestic market is becoming increasingly scarce. This explains the price. In the early 90's you could eat lobster in Massachusetts for very little money! But at least you should try it now! Intensive lobster fishing and global warming are likely to lead to the extinction of the lobster by the year 2100 ...

Lobster roll could be in a toasted New England syle roll (flat sides) and served warm with melted butter or served cold in a mayo based lobster ( or lobstah) salad. My favorite chowdah was at Durgin Park near where you were at Quincy Market but they recently closed after being open since 1827, with much of the same menu all those years. I believe they still have a smaller outlet at Logan Airport. Another go to is the nearby Union Oyster House which has been in business even longer.

the question on my mind, and I'm sure everybody else's mind, is where does the lobster roll fall on the Preis-Leistungsverhältnis? and where then also falls the clam chowder? :) From Phil's sounds of concern over Deana's dropping any pieces of meat, I'd guess perhaps not to far up the ratio/index for the roll :) I'm not a big fan of either, but the lobster rolls I had in Ogunquit Maine were pretty good!

A good chowder like that is amazing, and it’s pretty old world European style, except it has clam in it, the one you were talking about, did it have ham or bacon in it? I don’t remember where I tried it, or what it was called, but was an almost similar cream based chowder, but had a little bacon and some more savory type of ham. And leeks in it. Was great. Was pretty much a potato chowder, just different name.

I live in Boston (I love it!) and my favorite lobster rolls are in nearby Maine. Also, since you mentioned that you expected it to be more "buttery", there are two types of lobster rolls: Cold = the lobster is mixed w/ mayonnaise, Warm = the lobster is mixed with warm butter. I like both but many people tend to have a preference of one over the other. I know Deana already knows this, but Washington D.C and Boston are two expensive U.S. cities, I hope Phil knows that small or medium cities, especially those in the South or Midwest are much less expensive.

Boston cream alway. I'm obsessed with clam chowder. Love it most with dough bread or sourdough bowl. I'm not impressed with lobster roll. Just found out in different state they make it warm.

You need to get Connecticut Lobster Rolls. They’re warm and are made with lobster chunks and butter, salt and pepper. Done and delicious!

I love a great Clam Chowder. You needed a warm bread roll with fresh cold butter. Dip it in the steaming hot chowder, yummy. Lots of fresh cracked black pepper in the Clam Chowder can be good. It’s an Irish thing ‘black pepper’. Keeps you young and healthy. Want to live into your 90’s? Black Pepper and onions.

Large cities food costs so much more. Then the restaurant rent / overhead is so much higher. So much cheaper in the boonies where I live. Though the costs are going up with the high rate of inflation we have now for 'some' reason. The beef / pork I get is so much cheaper out here. Then I go right to a meat market butcher shop. Only a 6 mile drive from my house. The cattle / hogs come from their farm or ones nearby. Guessing you would be bored out here - takes 10 or 15 minutes tops to go from one side of town to the other. Take care - thank you for the video. I am watching your older videos.

I'm from Boston. I would have gone to Union Oyster House (which I saw in the background at some point - it's on the way from Quincy Market to the North End) or Legal Sea Foods. Union Oyster House, which is the oldest continuously operated restaurant in the U.S., has my favorite clam chowdah and ;). I prefer just straight up real whole lobster, shell and all. Don't cover that delicious taste with mayo. Boil it, crack it open and dip it in butter and/or lemon juice. Simplicity is usually best. I think lobster rolls are more of fast food way to sell lobster.
If you ever do boil whole lobsters: After eating the claws, tail and legs, simmer the whole remainder in a tomato sauce. It gives the sauce such a unique, almost sweet delicious taste. You're welcome.
Also for pizza, go to Pizzeria Regina in the Italian North End. There's about 100 years of pizza aroma embedded in the woodwork. You don't even need to eat; just go in and sniff the deliciousness.

My avator is a photo of myself eating clam chowder on a Washingon State ferry. It's a tradition, and it gets more expensive every visit. Unfortunately my German husband is not as open to seafood as Phil, and won't eat it. I even fried some lobster tails for us last visit and he just sees it as another fishy taste.
Boston is my favorite east coast city. We toured 13 east coast states for our honeymoon and Boston was the very best - the creaky history mixed in with modern classiness, and the water right there.
If anyone knows where I can get canned clams in Germany, please let me know. I don't need them fresh or in the shell. Canned works fine for making home made New England clam chowder. I've never seen clams in a grocery store in Germany. Nor crab, nor lobster. Not even at the fish trucks! Even mussels are hard to find, last time I paid 1 Euro *per* mussel!
Of the two foods I miss most from home (Mexican and good seafood), I suffer most from the lack of fresh lobster, crab and clams here. I can manage to make my own Mexican, but where do you get a lobster?

Whuuuuut ?? 😱 okay come to belgium, go to any store here and you can get mussels anywhere. Lobster is only available in big stores or good seafood stores or at the coast. Or at christmas season. Because lobster is not as common here as it is in Maine and New England, so while lobster there is like our surimi sandwich spread (fake crab), over here it's still quite expensive and only the upper class people eat it on a regular basis. But mussels are bountiful at the northsea. Also clams are available in my supermarket in town but only 2 small packages compared to 20 large and XL packages of mussels, so that's really for foodies and seafood lovers.

I love a good New England Clam Chowder. For lobster rolls, they are just OK. In my opinion, there are far tastier ways to eat lobster then to put it on a hotdog bun with majonnaise

I'm actually shocked you got such a decent looking lobster roll at Faneuil Hall but get whole lobsters instead next time. And it's expensive because you're in the heart of tourist Boston but that's okay... because it's still beautiful and fun!!!

I’m grateful I had good cooks growing up and I leaned to watch and cook myself.... Clam Chowder is the Best. Enjoy your videos. Phil is very cute. Maybe I should find a German Man to date.
