    i think the "down in it" thing is pretty scary
    bc the further down in it u sit, the larger the circle u can draw around the car where u cant see a short pedestrian or small car/bike..
    i think big trucks and suv's have a huge responsibility to design so that driver can see as much as possible
    ik the new camera systems r pretty impressive but it's my understanding that thatws a "luxury" they charge "a number w a comma in it" (as todd likes to say) to add on and that drivers treat as secondary

    Part of the appeal of the V8 isn't just the history and torque, it's the simplicity & cost of ownership. Simple to maintain, parts are cheap. I'm sure eventually avg mechanics will be used to working on hybrid systems, but as of now it's uncharted territory for many of them, so it'd be off to the dealership for many if problems were to arise.
    EDIT:
    That being said, it looks like a great truck, and I'm sure this new engine is reliable & awesome. New territory is worrisome for many.

    I know 2 people personally who have the prior generation tundra. Both have 300k miles and both are going strong. I asked them today about maintenance, each needed an alternator and a water pump. One needed a new driver seat due to ware. That’s it. One will be replaced this year with a 2021 model year that was ordered specifically because they are afraid of the reliability of the new truck. If any manufacturer can make the twin turbov6 8+ speed trans reliable it’s Toyota. I hope it’s good.

  • @mgmcd1
    @mgmcd1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Designed by Legos. Anyway, no replacement for displacement also has to do with mean time between failure. That V6 will have to run harder to make that horsepower and torque, than a V8 would, so liable to break down sooner, especially with the added turbos and related systems.

    • @jza80king
      @jza80king 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nonsense. This engine literally makes more torque at a lower rpm range than the V8. I love the 3UR-FE, it's a stout reliable engine but when you say "no replacement for displacement" i would tell you there is, it's called technology. For perspective I have a 1998 Toyota Supra with the original turbos at 157k miles and they have zero issues. The turbos that came on my car are archaic compared to turbos now. Turbo technology is vastly superior than the turbos that came in my car.

    • @mgmcd1
      @mgmcd1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jza80king ah, but what is the max payload and tow rating of your Supra?

    • @jza80king
      @jza80king 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mgmcd1 exactly my point. Turbos now have much better technology with how they dissipate heat, etc. For example i have to idle my turbos when i put a strain on them before i turn the car off, turbos now continue circulating oil and water to them even after the engine is shut off. Things like ball bearings, journal bearings, turbos now are just vastly superior and anyone who doesn't think that has never owned a turbo car. But if your comment about payload/towing has anything to go with straining the turbos believe me, I've turned the boost up on my turbos and have put significant strain on them for 12 years in the time I've owned the car.

    • @mgmcd1
      @mgmcd1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jza80king it’s a simple issue of how much of its run time must a system (any system) run near peak or higher capacities. With a Supra, you are over engined, so you don’t have to flog the motor just to move the vehicle. The Tundra is 6k pounds or so, hauling another 12k pounds at some points in its life. Okay, so most owners will just drive them like cars, but that’s a different issue. How long do you think your Supra motor would last hauling a few thousand extra pounds everywhere? This is basic system engineering.

    • @mgmcd1
      @mgmcd1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And it is not merely total system horsepower and torque. It is how much more the system must work to develop that output. A NA v8 can do that level with little to no problem. A diesel can do it even easier.

  • @cayman9873
    @cayman9873 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The v6 may or may not be close to the v8. The v8 was not all about power. Its that you buy an expensive truck and the engine can go 400 k to a million miles. The new v6 might not be good.
    The new bmws suck and fail. The porsche m96 has 4 ways it will fail and cost 18 to 30 grand to fix at 85 k miles.
    So the stupid numbers who cares. Its about lasting 500 thousand miles and being reliable.. turbos dont last very long.

    The big cabin space really appeals to me. I had a 1999 GMC Yukon years ago and I still miss how huge it was. But, can a 6'3 person really sit in the back row? You only touched on the rear seat in the video and sounded OK but I've seen shorter reviewers say headroom isn't great. Is there a sunroof delete option? Maybe that might help.

    • @EverydayDriver

      Our guys are 6’3” and we’re quite impressed with the space. Note the shot of Todd in the back with his legs crossed (and drivers seat in his driving position). As mentioned, headroom only works because there’s a cutout directly above the rear seats, but it does work. Thanks for watching!

    • @notasolution
      @notasolution 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean jeez at least give us the option. It’s not so much the 6 cylinder I’m concerned about, it’s that I don’t like my pickup trucks getting their power squeezed in by 2 turbos as if I bought a truck to do quarter mile runs and only put 1000 miles a year on it max and only run it for an hour at a time like turbos prefer. But either way I don’t like the 6 cyl turbo engine only that they’re offering, at least offer a naturally aspirated engine, preferably a v8, for buyers who want their truck to actually do truck things for decades without having to replace freaking turbos or head gaskets or whatever

    6:45 exactly. Theyve been building mass-production hybrids since the first prius came out and theyve been doing modern V6 engines since the GR series came out.
    If anything, its the turbo im worried about. They have bulletproof turbodiesels, but turbopetrols im not so sure. I mean, most of the turbopetrols that toyota built before this are usually reserved for their Lexus lineups afterall. But now theyre turbocharging almost everything, right down to 1liter 3cyl engines for their Asian market small crossovers and hatch.

  • @ZoomZoom81
    @ZoomZoom81 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I am very much looking forward to seeing the reliability of this powertrain. I'm not too concerned about the hybrid component...Toyota's seem to have that technology nailed down. But say what you will about the old gas-guzzling power-lacking 5.7L i-Force V8... it is as bulletproof indestructible as their old 4.7L (2UZ-FE) engine is/was. As much as I love the Ford Ecoboost V6 engines for power delivery & "decent" fuel economy... they are horribly unreliable by the time you get near 150k miles. I am a service manager at an independent shop and it seems every V6 Ecoboost (2.7L & 3.5L) engine needs new turbos before they hit 50k. Combine that with cam phaser & timing chain issues.... they're a nightmare. I know this engine has been used in a variation for a few years on the new Lexus LS500 and I haven't heard or seen any common issues yet but there's just not enough of them on the road with high enough mileages to get an accurate impression. I hope so though. It's an impressive powertrain w/ great potential to be used in many other applications in various forms & iterations. Great review gentlemen! Always watch your reviews and appreciate your thoroughness & insight.

    Hey great review, I felt the "new truck" excitement coming through.
    Question on the cabin; I'm coming from a Range Rover sport and wondering how the cabin isolation compares and what is the ride like? Do you need to get the Platinum with adaptive suspension for smoothness or do all the builds have a good ride?

    • @EverydayDriver
      @EverydayDriver  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The ride is improved for all the Tundras because they went away from leaf springs in the rear. But, it's still doesn't have the independent rear suspension which your Ranger Rover probably does. No solid rear axle truck can ride as well as something with an independent rear, so it depends on your preferences and needs. Cabin insulation isn't to Range Rover standards, but few things are. We encourage you to drive one and see what you think. It's a big improvement over the last in cabin refinement, but not to luxury SUV standards. Thanks for watching!

    The thinking how awesome for people that cant drive. Is the same as the automatic and lane assist and traction control and auto braking and on and on. This will yield a disney ride you cant turn off the auto functions ever.. for safety. Great plan if you hate driving and want no vehicles that require driving.

    Looks like a whole bunch of complicated tech and mechanicals to break and go wrong. I'm going to guess that when it does have issues the only one that will be able to figure out what is wrong with it will be the dealer and it's computers. How about a Truck that is actual for work and not a fashion statement. Imagine you will see a lot of these in the suburbs sitting next to the wife's 4X4 crossover that only goes to the store.

    Guys when you will pull your tongue from toyota... uhmm.. can you stop praising and do honest review please? We all know that in real life twin turbo v6 is worse than 5.7 v8 in terms of power and reliability. Turbo lag is huge. Also as far as mpgs goes it will not do better than v8 when you tow. Plus according to toyota you have to use premium fuel when you tow with new v6 so you it will cost you more money to tow with v6 than with v8. It would be nice if vloggers would stop being so kiss/love to manufacturers because of fear not being invited for next new thing presentations

    • @EverydayDriver
      @EverydayDriver  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We mentioned concerns over the loss of the V8, as well as issues with no real MPG benefit. Turbo lag wasn’t an issue during our time with the truck. Reliability was mentioned as well, but in this case the V6 is an unknown in the long term and the V8 is known. We are glad to see a new generation of the Tundra - and as a brand new truck is was good (unsurprisingly) but not perfect, as nothing is. No way to know long term reliability yet. Thanks for watching.

    • @treeinside
      @treeinside 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I enjoy a good V8 as much as the next man but have you tried modern turbos? The torque comes on way sooner and they pull hard. Going back to NA V8 after it feels lethargic. Reliability wise NA all day but we live in a world of EPA rules and I'll trust a Toyota turbo over any other brand.
