  • We've driven the 3rd Generation Toyota Tundra before, but not in TRD Pro trim. With snow on the ground and only the factory All Terrain tires we venture out onto the freeway and notorious back road to see how the new version deals with everything. Along the way we debate if the loss of the V8 will prove irrelevant. Join us for a Test Drive!

Hi, from Japan!! Yes, you guys are right. There are very small numbers of truck guys in Japan. Therefore, Toyota doesn’t sell big pick up trucks in Japan. They build those for truck guys in U.S. So some Japanese truck guys reimport Tacoma, Tundra and etc with extra money. Funny.

I was recently full-sized truck shopping, and the Tundra (OR, not Pro) had a few issues that caused me to go another route:
    - No 4A. I get that not everyone needs 4A, but it's incredibly handy when driving through changing road conditions. Also, if you're spending $70k on a truck...c'mon. This was my biggest issue
    - Seats were particularly uncomfortable compared to the competition, especially the Ram 1500 and F-150
    - Missing some off-roading goodies, which I think is the same on the TRD Pro as the TRD OR
It has my favorite powertrain of the group, but that's really about it. I wound up with an F-150 Tremor w/ the 3.5 ecoboost, and I'm pretty happy with the decision

Agree of the 4A. Toyota said it makes the transmission less longevity and reliability. But I sure hope they add that feature in the future.

Great review as usual from you guys. Not a truck guy myself. Came close to getting one but the reality is if I'm not towing often and or carrying stuff I just can't justify hauling around an empty truck bed, especially at these 'luxury car prices'! I am able to get two road bikes into my SUV and lock it up safely. All new trucks today looks great and there is a need for them if you use them for work, but the Tundra would be my overall choice if had to choose. They'll still be more reliably with better re-sale than all the others for sure.

...and spun bearings and multiple engine replacements for vehicles under 50k miles. Many even less than that. As much as I want to like this and the new Tacoma, I will stick with my naturally aspirated V6 Tacoma with a manual transmission. They are truly bulletproof. I hope Toyota sorts out the problems, and stops just placing the broken, defective parts with the same defective parts.

Tesla and Rivian are killing these full size trucks even though both have basically just begun to sell. Tesla killing it because it's literally a Tank...and actually bullet proof as well so will be used to the extent is produced as an actual work truck. The Rivian has charging infrastructure issues and is not "holistic" as both Tesla and Ford Lightning but comes with all of the extras (gear tunnel, stove, tent) whereas everyone else is still just selling you a truck. Pricing is starting to get so low on Teslas now the entire US automotive Industry might find itself in total shock actually as excepting for Cybertruck the value proposition of a Tesla is starting to become insanely compelling as barely used prices start to really and truly plunge for pure play BEV. I think the Ford Mustang will match that well but the Ford F150 all electric might see prices go off a cliff as massive upgrades be en route. I don't really know all that much about Rivian but they seem to be doing everything right in "downsizing" for the R2 Series. This means midsize and entry level pocket rockets are now in the crosshairs *provided* Rivian doesn't go bk. Ford has a very well regarded now battery electric van. Not sure about the Rivian product as it doesn't look very foul weather capable to me but both Ford and Rivian have "shown up" for that one so i guess we'll find out. How Canoo, Lucid, Fisker, Electromechanica, $fuv all become "disposed of" i have no idea but Aptera is yet another wild one that might be the first vehicle truly capable of flight given its current engine placement in the actual wheels. Good luck flying over traffic and not spending the rest of your life in Prison in a Toyota Tundra et al!
