10:07 yes but Tundra has that fantastic style of glove box where the door is separate from the storage area instead of all one thing the way most glove boxes are. I like this design because the weight of what is stored inside isn't resting on the door when you open it, and everything stays put and isn't jostled around by opening and closing the glove box.

As a Toyota Master Certified Consultant and working for a dealer group that includes several brands including Ford and GM; I had an opportunity to take part in a Tundra SR5 walk around with both Ford and Chevy top truck producers. Both brand sales consultants came away impressed with the Tundra. Comments were like, 'wow...that's a lot of truck for the money'. The Tundra will deliver a very competitive package of power, towing and features at a better price than the competition. It's not perfect but it is a big move up in class.

It will be interesting to see what their volume will be now that they have a new design and, more importantly, more line time available. Previously Tacoma took up a lot of the capacity in Texas, but they now have other plants for Tacoma. Maybe they will actually build appreciable numbers of the mid and low level trims. Before they allocated the Tundra capacity mostly to the more profitable, higher level trims.

Toyota is a very conservative company. Nothing wrong with that, it certainly works for them. But pickups are tools and some people can really use things like onboard generators and functional tailgates. These are the things Japanese companies created to make their products appealing to Americans decades ago. It's not happening anymore, at least not with Tundra.

A couple of points. I test drove the old one in 2017 and found it inferior to the Ford I wound up leasing. What I couldn’t figure out is why the lease price was about $160 more per month than the Ford, even though the sticker prices were comparable, and Toyota is known for great resale value which should mean a higher residual. In 2020, during COVID, both Ford and Toyota were still offering the same truck, but I went with Ford again because it was better and cheaper. (Long term durability was unimportant to me on a lease.)
My lease isn’t up again until 2023, and I will definitely look at the new Toyota, but aren’t they still behind Ford in offering a small electric motor incorporated into the power train? This Toyota seems to be a follower rather than a leader, leaving me to think they will still be an also-ran in the full-size pick-up wars.

My 2008 Tundra is going to hit 300,000 miles in early 2022; my father owned 5 Fords since 1983, never making it past 210,000, and that was with extensive maintenance to his transmissions and transfer cases. That’s why Toyotas have higher relative resale, but that may be less important to someone who leases.

Good job Tom. Toyota clearly wants to get in on the Ford EcoBoost customer demographic. Ford proved you can do it and it then becomes more popular than the V8. It will feel different than the old truck for sure but no denying that with a trailer behind you, the "boost" of twin turbos is unmatched. There's a reason why heavy duty trucks have all turned to turboed, diesel trucks. Gas V8 power is good but its a dog with any real weight behind you and will destroy you on poor gas mileage under load as compared to a juiced up turboed truck gas or diesel.

TOYOTA has made a VERY BIG MISTAKE ( and I am a 100% Toyota loyalist ! ) The 2022 Tundra has an "active air dam " underneath , up front.
At high speed, it deploys to direct air to the sides. At low speed, it folds up to restore full ground clearance. This "active air dam" PREVENTS Tundras from having FRONT TOW HOOKS which to work properly must be attached to the frame . An off-road vehicle without tow hooks ????
You will not be pulling your buddy out of a snow bank or no one is going to be pulling you out of a mud bog . Tow Hooks are essential for every off-roader .
    Huge Oversight by Toyota !

Designed in USA but shares platform with Land Cruiser. I'm thinking that was developed in Japan.

I got the impression the frame was designed in Michigan (Tundra was largely engineered in MI, styled in CA). I'll check though.

Now all Toyota needs to do is snatch that cummins engine that Nissan doesn’t know how to market in their Titan truck
Slap their hybrid on it and make a heavy duty tundra and then we’re all set

Best looking full size pickup imo. Pity there's no diesel. And if it's correct (as shown in yellow) that the new one gets the same 19 mpg combined as the old one: disappointing fuel economy.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

More power than the V8 and some 20% better fuel economy though.

There's a typo, the EPA average is 14, not 19. The rest of the numbers are correct. I shouldn't post at 1AM.

If Toyota’s long delay in updating the powertrain on this Tundra is any indication of what the future has in store, Toyota may be 5-10 years late to the electric truck market. I suppose for those people unwilling to move forward they’ll then have a gas option. Even with the hybrid, it seems like they’re just doing the very minimum. Typical for Toyota trucks.

That screen is absolutely hideous, its obtrusive, with sharp corners and rises above the dash line of sight, what was Toyota thinking??Whats the obsession with automakers and ever larger center stack screens??, its an automobile , not an office.

Please understand that all the number like ford offering higher payload and towing does not make there truck better because with higher stress cause more wear that's why I think you tend to see many truck on the side of the highway. Honestly I think no truck can handle a tow more than 9k pounds even though the manufacturer say it can.

Toyota they Kinda screwed up with the new tundra :(
With a new design the front is ugly the back it’s ugly headlights are ugly :( what ugly bumpers :( mirrors are old school ugly to :(
I don’t know how much it’s gonna cost you when all this goes down twin or 2 turbos, hybrid generator and battery 🔋 :(
Will cost you $-25-35k to replace every 10 years or sooner :(
Plus the quality is not anymore and Toyota has issues consuming the tires to fast All Toyota platforms 25-35k miles:(
