- Mohammad Muneem Nazir and Hardik Vaghela from Alif speak about what being a Sufi truly means, and how their unconventional band was formed, while punctuating the talk with their soulful Kashmiri music and throwing light on the monotony of the nine-to-five life.
Co-founded in 2008 by Mohammad Muneem Nazir and Hardik Vaghela, Alif is a band that is based in Pune but rooted in Kashmir, and has won prestigious accolades like the IRAA Award for their single, "Like a Sufi". Mohommad Muneem, who hails from Srinagar, is the lead vocalist and songwriter of Alif and also teaches Urdu Poetry at Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce through a course called Sarir-e-Khamma. Baroda born Hardik Vaghela, who plays keyboard/piano for Alif, teaches at Swadhaa School and is also a music producer. Besides Alif, Mohommad and Hardik have also co-founded Muziclub, a music training services company which has over 2000 active students. Winner of IRAA Award for the single "Like a Sufi", Alif’s music is an alluring blend of various ethnic flavours and different genres that results in beautifully crafted contemporary poetries written in Urdu and Kashmiri. True. I am not religious at all. I met Mohammad Muneem and his band (at that time it was called Highway61 and Hardik was part of that band as well) in Pune in 2011 for the first time. My friend and I received the honour to sing along with them when they performed "Knocking on heaven's door". However, the most memorable experience with them I had in HRC Pune some years back. Muneem knew that I was there. After performing one of the songs he said that he appreciated that their songs were not listened to by Indian people only but also by people outside of India as well. Then he was calling for me and asked me to join him on the stage. After he introduced me to the crowd they started to perform "Umeed hai". He knew that this song meant something special to me because when they were about to release that song I was the only one outside their famliy members to have had a chance to listen to it at musiclub in Baner where they used to practice. Unfortunately I did not feel well that evening. But Mohammad picked me up at the hotel and he drove me back.
Anyway, when the instrumental part started he grabbed my hands and we were dancing in a kind ol walz style xD I will never forget that evening nor will I ever forget having met Muneem, Hardik, Jatin, Rohit or Rahul. It is really time for me to go to India again...
