    I just love how they picked one of the trickiest lighting condition (cloudless highnoon with big bodies of water) to even figure out exposure for film. The only step left closer to hell would have been to try this with not instant film.

    The old adage for these types of films was to say "Polaroid" as you pull the film through the rollers. If you pull it too fast, you can get basically dots of white on the print. If you pull too slow, you'll get uneven development and you'll see banding from the rollers. From my memory, Fuji instant is self-terminating, so it shouldn't matter how long, after 2 or 3 minutes, it wont develop any further. I think the gaining ISO is a result of the pods aging.

    I believe, that it is not a sensitivity increase, but a loss of contrast (sensitivity) at positive stage, which makes it impossible to gain enough density (darkness) in the print. Which makes perfect sense for expired material.

  • @mateuszlenik
    @mateuszlenik 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    One cool thing to know about FP-100c (not sure about the BW version) is that the chemistry is self-terminating and you can develop for as long as you want - it'll be fine. It's important to peel it apart before it dries out though. The times provided on the package are minimal processing times, there's no way to overdevelop.
    Underdevelopment leads to underexposed prints, so there's a chance that you just underdeveloped it.
    You can also recover the negatives from FP-100c, the process is reasonably simple.

    • @theundefinedphotographer
      @theundefinedphotographer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't shot with the 100-b, but I shot the 1000-b and I would shoot through a whole pack and then peel them when I got home, so I think all the pack films are self-terminating.

    • @mateuszlenik

      Coincidentally, I'm actually taking a break from a video I'm editing about these films (but for Polaroid 250 instead of 4x5) to watch this!
      Shooting instant film on large format is really frustrating but also really fun and rewarding when you finally get a properly exposed shot. I used the lomograflok back to shoot the new Fuji instax wide with my Intrepid, and it took a lot of trial and error to figure out how to meter the film since you can't always go by your lightmeter.

    • @patrickjclarke
      @patrickjclarke 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But it’s a negative exposed, then developed and transferred to the positive paper. What part are you saying gains sensitivity?

    • @oceangrunge7139
      @oceangrunge7139 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patrickjclarke i guess i was somewhat imprecise in my original comment. A more precise statement might be that the effective ISO of the entire system went up with expiration. The sensitivity of the positive paper (which is but a component of the whole system) went down with time. Positive paper being white paper to begin with that becomes dark, a less sensitive positive paper will not get as dark. I suppose the negative losing sensitivity should produce a thinner negative that ought to compensate for that. I guess that just implies that the rate at which the negative and positive components lose sensitivity is different, and the positive component has lost more sensitivity when the images in the video were taken.

    I got some old Fuji FP-100C in 4x5 and the trick to getting more or less normal looking shots is to shoot with short exposures (1/500s, 1/250s maybe 1/125s but not slower). When fresh, Fuji FP100C has a blue/cyan cast with longer exposures. Somehow with expired film that turns into heavy green and magenta. Don't ask me why.

    I got into instant photograph just as FP-3000b was being discontinued. I only got to shoot a few packs, but they were all very satisfying! As for FP-100C, I kept burning thru packs till they reached about $36. If you want to try getting more out of the 100c, try extracting the negatives. They produce more range and better color than you might expect. I usually gave away the positives to friends or people I met while out shooting, and only kept the negatives. I though I'd killed it and decided to finally shoot it 2 years ago, when I botched loading it and ruined 2 sheets right off the back. THen I let it sit around for a couple more years ... and it still looks incredible. I have one last sheet left. I forgot 100B existed, but a look in my archives shows me a few smaller sized FP100B shots from ancient history (2009-ish). I forget how accurate it is, but I always heard FP was self-terminating development so the dev time is only ever effective as a minimum. Too bad Fujifilm hates money and photographers or we'd be able to test that.

    i remember seeing a tiktok video where someone shot a 3yr expired fuji provia, and he swore it gains iso/sensitivity because thats how the "reversal film" works.....(that things works in reverse) I don't know chemistry, but for the life of me this sounds like bullshit, if this is true then 50yr old slide films should basically be iso 3200

      It’s not that the slide film gains sensitivity, it’s that it loses contrast so the shadows are lifted quite a bit giving it the appearance of being more exposed than it actually is

    I'd chug flaming hot mountain dew if it meant Fuji would bring back FP100C in Peelapart
