1 letter difference in our names, and we think of the same thing at similar times lol i was JUST thinking about earthworms and starting them the past 2 days, and now i see this thanks for the vids love em
My outside compost piles stay pH 6.6 to 7.2. Basically neutral. So I try to keep the smaller earthworm containers about the same. I actually use chicken grit instead of lime. chicken grit is ground oyster shell, so it has calcium, magnesium and other trace monerals. Slower acting than lime so not as likely to do a quick swing and mess things up.
Along with the paper, I usually add some bagged top soil or potting soil. Leaves would be great. Add some lime or calcium or something to keep the pH reasonable. Inside I am using Rubbermaid or one of the other brands of tubs available everywhere.
Thanks for the response, David. You mentioned adding lime to adjust the pH. Do earthworms prefer alkali or acidic condition? We might be getting a little technical, but I am hoping you know.
@JACOBiiTE Common sense, feed the size your fish can eat. If they are swimming around with worm hanging out of their mouth then it needs to be cut up. Some fish take whole worms , some cut in half, small fish need the worms really chopped up. Rinse the water after chopping.
David, how about using natural leaves instead of shredded paper? I am guessing that it might have more nutrition than paper. Also, I heard that worms need sand to chew and digest. Would it be a good idea to use natuaral soil as well? I store my fishing worms in the frigerator. Do you need to do this when you raise worms? What kind of box do you use for the worms? Looks like a tupperware box?
I just talked with the woman at Shady Creek Worms about the order I made a week ago, and she said they are shut down for the winter and will refund my money.- Her son has't yet changed the website to stop accepting orders.
Not sure what you mean by different types of worms. I know people that raise grindal worms in the same containers with earthworms. They get a lot of both types of worms. I have not tried different types of earthworms. You don't want to put in night crawlers. They add so much slime that it will be nasty to feed the fish. David
violetglln Sure you can use worms from outside. Just don't use the big night crawlers. They are so slimey they will destroy your water. Use the small 'fishing' type worms.
Dan Reyes I have always read that erathwomrs will live if they are split in half. I think it depends on where you cut them. Mine don't live cause they are eaten.
+Alek Cetino Worms love to grow up in decomposing paper and cardboard. Makes a great bedding. And does not have any mites or bugs or whatever growing in it. And it is a good way to do some recycling.
Thank you!! Want to start compost and worms for garden planning!!
