    My basement stays about in the 60-70's or so! Good to know that even if it gets in the 70's, my worms will still be safe. I was wondering about that! Thx!

    Dave, thank you for a great video. I just started my worm farm in a 10 gallon tote. I am in N.E. Ohio. I fear it will get too hot here for them so I was thinking I could bury totes in the cool ground in the woods where it is always shady. In winter they can stay in my shop which is heated all winter to about 45 to 50 degrees. What do you think? I don't have a basement I can keep them in.

    This looks great but why throw away the bedding? Isn't that where the castings are? Or you do this just for the crawlers to use them for fishing eh...

    Dave, In order to prevent over feeding, wouldn't it be best to just feed them with leaves, grass and other things they would find outside in the yard ?

    I’ve started raising nightcrawlers for the second time in my life. I could remember what to do for sure. I knew I was missing something important. Sand! That is what I was missing. Also getting the right mixture. I have eight baby nightcrawlers, but I’m not set up yet. Wasn’t planning on doing it again, but they are breading.

    I can't find regular peat moss only the kind with miracle grow plant food in it.that kind be ok or toxic to worms?

    Having trouble getting mine to produce. Bedding is mostly shredded newspaper, peatmoss, & Sandy soil. Change bedding every two months. Feed them puree food scraps, corn meal, coffee grounds, ground egg shells, & Sandy soil. In 6 months went from 129 night crawlers to 85. I do pick off the ones on top that don't look good. Found 6 egg capsules changing bedding today. Keep them in my basement average temp is 64°. Any ideas what I may be doing wrong

    Hi dave,
    Im a beginner for making and raising worm farms, i fish with them to. lets say i just bought 500 nightcrawlers, how much would i feed them without over or underfeeding them? and what would you recommend for feeding them? eggs shells,bannana peels, cantaloupe, avakado pits,dead leafs,ectect? Would you recommend using a dark color bin or transparent bin? Thanks for your time Dave. if anyone has any suggestions for me please share them with me, they would be highly appreciated.

      Ashley Pfalzer dark bins. They hate the light. I put all my food scraps (minus meat and dairy, oils, sweets, etc) in my blender or food chopper and then put them into ice cube trays. I bury one cube of food and when it's gone I bury another. Remember they are also eating their bedding, paper, etc too!

    he should hose them down with just a quick shot of water, then add a light dusting of cornmeal, all worms surface to the top after a rain, my dad and i raised night crawlers and red wigglers for 12 yrs, you got to give them water about everyday

    • @SevenSproutsFarmstead
      @SevenSproutsFarmstead 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Antonio Ruiz depends on their age. If you have sexually mature worms they reproduce quite quickly. I'll go from 1,000 worms to 500,000 in a years time. Keep their bin conditions favorable for better reproduction rates 😉

    Forgot to add that most bags recommend a mask and you check the company's msds for info also on their website. Also: Like most mosses, peat is made up of a number of different spores. Inhaling these into the lungs can be dangerous, although not usually fatal. It can lead to respiratory problems like asthma, wheezing, and chronic shortness of breath.
    In some cases, peat has been found to contain harmful bacterial cells known as Sporothrix schenckii which can lead to infection if inhaled - and often skin irritation if touched. If this bacteria enters the blood stream, it can cause the potentially deadly condition sporotrichosis. People who regularly handle peat moss often wear face masks and protective gloves as a precaution.

    • @SevenSproutsFarmstead
      @SevenSproutsFarmstead 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pam Lipscomb yes, I wear a face mask and gloves when I handle my Peat Moss. Also bc you have to add Gardening Lime to it to balance the PH and that stuff is awful to inhale and whatnot.

  • @pamlipscomb4728
    @pamlipscomb4728 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It would be good to note that breathing in peat moss is not good for your lungs and it fact the bags tell you to wear a mask and not use on windy days. It sticks to the walls of the lungs and will cause problems within the structures causing coughing, breathing difficulties, etc. and if you have any breathing issues - definitely don't do without respirator or good dust mask. This also goes for any type of dry garden products like lime, gypsum, etc. same for crafts when working with dyes which are very toxic.

    Hi Dave, my cousin, sister, and I sell nightcrawlers in the summer and spring time to anyone who wants to buy them to go fishing with. I noticed that the dirt sometimes sticks to them and they look like they don't like it at all. Do you know how I can prevent that, or if it is normal for them? Also, I have a refrigerator for my nightcrawlers so they won't die. Is it better for them to be refrigerated or to just sit outside? Thank you Dave!
