Great video. People make the "you have to move old cultures to new ones" part sound so hard and annoying when it is actually very easy. I must try this out. I have limited myself to daphnia and mosquito larvae but it is time to get real. If I am able to get this going I am sure my corydoras will thank me.

I did culture micro worms and it turned out excellent but most of my fish won't eat them. I guess they are to small.

Hi David. I recently purchased a white worm culture and the starter culture media contains gnats or some sort of mites. Any advice on how to get rid of them or swap the worms over to new media without transferring the pests with them? Btw, thank you for taking the time to make these videos. You make venturing into new things alot easier
Mites and other unwanted guests in a white worm culture become a problem slowly due to the colder temp. Virtually impossible to eliminate. If it gets bad, collect a bunch of worms and put them in a water container. The mites and critters will float (not all of them). Pour them off and add more water. After a couple of times the worms in the water should be pretty clean of mites and bugs. Turkey baster them into at least 2 new starts. That should get you a couple of clean cultures to get going. Often you can scrape off the top of the culture and find that the mites and gnats are not in the middle layer even though lots of worms are. This can be a new culture also. Sometimes I just scoop out half of the media and put in new media. Then start feeding the worms on the new side. They will outrun the critters.
I wish any of these tactics worked on grindal worms.
Hey David - another question. I've started a white worm culture! When I got yogurt, it was organic, but when I got home I realized it was vanilla flavored. So I went back and got a container of plain yogurt, but it's Greek yogurt. Are either or neither okay?
Also, I'm using your method, but didn't have nutritional yeast on hand so I'm using a mix of quality dog food (that I powdered) and organic greens powder. I am using the Arnold's WW bread.
Also: I've read some other stuff that says that like with redworms, NOT to use dairy while you've had such success with yogurt??

Greek yogurt is fine. The dog food is fine too. You should get tons of worms with that.

Are there any air holes? I just got a my first culture in the mail today!
I use a variety of air holes. Tiny drilled holes on a couple of sides up high. A slit on the high side with filter material to keep the worms in. I don't put holes in the top since I stack 2 containers and the stacking would block the air holes.

+mnelson10000 Freezing in your home freezer doesn't work. Can not do it quick enough. The cell walls explode and end up with just milky nasty water when you thaw it out.

+Ronnie Lee I used spirulina years ago. Works well. Found the Brewers Yeast works even better and still has a lot of nutrient value. If I had the time I would probably try do some of both.

wow!!! thanks for sharing, one question, is it possible that when you have some many worms crawling up is not necessarily because the culture is crushing but rather because there is no ventilation. I have made mine with holes and mesh so no other critters get in and get a lot of worms as well but they don't crawl up like yours as much.
A really full container of worms will certainly crash if anything goes wrong. Done that a lot of times. Key is to control the moisture and keep harvesting the worms to control the population. Moisture control is a rolled up paper towel at one in to absorb excess moisture or remove a corner area of the mucky stuff and put in new media. Do not wet it. The new super dry media will wick over the moisture and provide new clean area for the worms to grow. I have tubs with small holes at the short ends, hole along the long ends, hole in both, 1 inch x 2 inch cut out areas on the lids. I don't think it is ventilation
Really helpful. Can the same ingredients perhaps in lesser quantity be used for grindals?
grindals are room temperature. The yogurt will spoil and mold making a mess. They will probably eat the rest without a problem.

I use the same media for grindal worms. I use a commercial potting soil mix or straight peat moss with some chicken grit (ground oyster shell)

Nice Video! How long does it take for the culture to crash from when you start it?
A culture will last for several months. Some of my earlier videos show how to extend the time on a culture by moving the worms from side to side, but it is easier to just start a new culture with a big chunk of an old culture.
Hey David - You said you use Miracle Grow Potting Soil - is this the regular stuff or their Organic Potting soil? I have some regular on hand, but wonder about the 'feeds for x months' claim as it likely has some MG mixed in....but maybe that's okay?

I actually have better luck with the regular. Here in Georgia the organic is mostly ground up trees/bark and is hard to get the right moisture level. The fertilizer is little time release balls about the size of a bb. If I happen to see one I pick it out, otherwise there is not enough of them to cause any problems.
Great (since I already have a good bag of the 'regular', I don't have to run out and buy more).

Hi, do you have holes in your container and how do you keep the worms from scaping? Great video by the way.
There are holes. I have done them a lot of ways. Sometimes I put very small holes at the top of the sides. Then with the lid on and stacked the holes are not covered. I have also cut small holes and stuffed them with cotton or filter floss. The worms are kept in a dark wine cooler. They do not try to escape unless the culture has truly gone south and the worms have to get out or die. What a mess that makes.

check my you tube for microworm videos. Totally different growing conditions and media. Powdered wet instant potatoes and yeast.

Put earth in containers.
Put white worms in.
Put in cut bread slices with natural/ live yoghurt & top with that other stiff (I'll have to rewatch it & take notes as already forgot).
They will feed off it & mulitply.
Do you have to change the soil at any point? If so, when?

Over time the soil will get very wet. Time to change it out, or change part of it as I show in several videos. The old stuff is great for the garden or plants.

Why do you feed white and grindal worms differently? Have you tried this method with the grindals, and have they not done as well as on the pet kibble? Just curious. I greatly enjoy all of your videos! Thanks so much!
they are different worms. The best I have found with the grindals is really dog food. Whole wheat bread, brewers yeast and yogurt/kefir gives me the most white worms.

What is your experience with temperature? I keep hearing that you must keep them in a cooler or they will die at room temps, but another guy on ytube who sells them says he breeds them in a room that is 72f, and they are not the tropical or EZ kind (Enchytraeus doerjesi)
I have tried the worms that supposedly are room temperature. They just lived for me, never really made anything I could feed. I have also tried the regular refrigerator ones, same result. The barely hung on and never could get enough to feed. But I get so many wine cooler white worms I just do not go to a lot of effort for the other varieties of white worms out there.

How do you know your culture is almost done and you have to start a knew one? Is there something in the soil that gets used up? Great video. If I can find some white worms, I'd like to give it a try. Thanks.
The surface of the soil will show a lot of wetness and get a 'shiny' look to it. All the worms will be moving up on the surface, getting out of the souring soil. With experience you will learn to tell as it is getting close. With that said, I missed 2 containers doing the mass exodus last night. What a huge mess.

Ideal temp is 53F to 58F. Easiest way is with a small cheap wine cooler. Temp makes a huge difference.

Hi David, I really likes your video for you was explaining and showing and obviously teaching how to culture these worms, my question is where to get the worms to start this culture for I'm in Saudi Arabia now because it is where I work, so again where can I find this white worm to start my culture?
Thank you for the kind words. I think that you are out of luck. White worms are horrific in shipping, especially overseas. They are way too temperature sensitive, plus anyone opening and checking the box is going to s*** themselves. A really good alternative is earth worms. Easy to grow, easy on the temperature requirements, and what fish doesn't like a piece of earthworm!
I have a big problem with my start up. My culture starting growing a ton of “spider webs” all over it after only a week. I think it’s mold but I know it’s not good. What do you recommend I do to resolve the issue?
The webs are a fungus that is actually good for the soil and plants. Not good for the worms since it competes for food and space. I am guessing that you are either using out side soil or a packaged soil that says it has( myco something) in it. Usually clearly states it on the bag. I do not like it for either the worms or for gardening plants. OK in the compost pile. You can try pulling the stuff out. I usually find it always drags out a lot of the soil at the same time. Keep dragging the stuff out and eventually the bacteria the worms like will take over, but it can be a while.
I usually just start over with fresh media and move a bunch of the worms over. Put them in a container of water so you can wash out as much soil and fungus as possible. Then put them on the new media. That will solve the problem.

Hey. How do you keep your culture from growing fungus? I use activaded charcoal as substrate and eventualy it grows a white cotton fungus. Your cultures seem very clean even thou you feed a large amount of food when do feed it.
Some times I get an lousy cotton fungus on a new culture. I just pull it out and throw it away. Spray it with water. In a couple of days it will go away.

David can we use regular yeast powder? i can't find any yeast flakes available in market..
Baking yeast, the stuff that makes bread rise will not work. Check the same baking aisle, should be nutritional yeast in 4 oz or so jars. NOT the packet stuff. Health food stores will have it but it will be expensive. But you can see what the bottles of it look like.

Plain yogurt with living bacteria. 55F, every 2-3 days.
would that feeding method work for Grindal worms?
Hi David, some of my cultures have these tiny white egg-like things scattered over the soil, do you know what they might be? Also my worms (not grindals) aren’t as large as yours.....any advice?
Well the eggs will hatch in a few days and you will know what they are. Either a mite or some kind of small fly. If the top area is not covered in worms maybe you can skim off some of the soil and replace it. I find stuff like that shows up if I am not keeping the left over food replaced often enough or the soil is too wet. If too wet, clear one end, wrap up some paper towels and stuff into the corner. Prop the opposite side up so the moisture runs downhill into the paper towel.

Great vid thanks! However I'm confused about what the plastic mesh is for? Doesn't seem to do anything? Can just harvest from the sides of the container? Also another note, I'd make sure you don't use potting mix with any fertiliser in it right??
Put the mesh on top of the food. Worms will get on top of the mesh same as they climb up the sides. Easy to remove clean worms that way. There is so little fertilizer in the potting mix the worms will never know it.

Just getting too many worms for the amount of media. Which is what you want. That is why a super rich culture if it is harvested heavily every day will stay super rich for a long time. Got to harvest.

I've followed your method and I got white fungus all over the top of the soil and the bread. It is a brand new culture and the first feeding I put in. Is there something I'm doing wrong to get fungus (in less than 1 week)? pH too acidic? Any help would be appreciated. Thx
Sometimes I get the white fungus too. Big light airy white fungus. I just pull it out and toss it and keep going. A little peppermint tea or chamomille tea sprayed on it will kill it. Only lasts a few days then the soil bacteria will build up and it won't be able to live.
Are these Grendal worms? and what is the warmest/coldest you can go before they die? I dont have air con and summer time temps in my house are often 100-115F
The title is white worms. Not grindal worms. Different temperature requirements and food needs. I do not think grindal worms would survive in those high temps. Wow, can not imagine that.
you can increase the temperature in the cooler to 20 C (68 f) with no effect on growth rate to save energy.

Shipping right now is so unreliable. Shipping to you first goes to Kentucky or someplace like that and then comes back down. If the fish club ever gets to meet again I can bring a cultture there.

If you have Aldi stores they have great whole grain bread for under $2. The worms love it.

Hello good sir. Any advice for the dirt. Do I wet it first? I have a culture I been trying to split but it just won’t work they keep molding over.
the media needs to be slightly damp. Not wet. If the mold is the cottony white stuff just lift it off or spray with a little water to tap it down. It will go away in a few days.

Ideal temperature is 50F-60F. Wine cooler is perfect. Refrigerator will not set that high. If it did, all the food would spoil. They start dying off at 70F.
Do you add salt to your feed or the the water you add to the soil?
no salt added at all. Probably some in the bread? but never paid any attention to it.
The miracle grow potting mix I can get contains root feed is this ok to use?
I wouldn't pay extra for the miracle grow stuff even though he says that's what he uses, unless the fertilizers actually help the worms?!
As a bigger starter is required? If yes then where to get?

Do the lid have to have holes? I find flies inside my culture that has ventilation holes and that completely ruins the batch. I am hoping the lid can be completely sealed.
Has to be air exchange. I either put really tiny holes along the edge or one or two larger holes and then stuff some filter material or cotton into those holes.
Do you need to replace the bread with live bacteria yogurt and yeast flakes every few days? or just wait until they are eaten down more, as like your vid I have been removing after 3 days but nothing is eaten at all.
Or should I leave it in for longer? Its been 3 weeks now and this method hasn't produced anything..
change every 2-3 days even if not eaten. Otherwise, mites and other nasties will move in. If the culture is having a hard time it will only consume the yogurt and yeast, leaving the bread. Once the bacteria start to build up in your media the bread will start to disappear. Check your temperatures. That and moisture is a good place to watch for beginning problems. 53F to 55F or close to it. Moisture level is you can feel the dampness but the media will not clump together it squeezed.
@@GrowAndEatThis they are not consuming the yogurt at all, I think the yeast is being eaten, at least a bit of it is, but in 3 days non of the live bacteria yogurt is eaten at all
Does it matter if you use potting soil mix with fertilizer? I have some Miracle Grow Potting Mix but it has time released fertilizer. Thank you.
Don't worry about the fertilizer. If you see any of the fertilizer little balls in the mix just toss them out. But I ignore them. There are so few.
Problem with soil from the garden is there are so many organisms already growing in that soil. All of them are going to be competing with the worms you want to raise. I would think you would have to heat treat it for a hour or so to try and kill all the mites and natural organisms that are in the soil.
Ps- I luv grindal worms….lol 💙 I just wished I’d had the masses you do.
