  • Step by step instructions for raising earthworms indoors. Not in the video but needed. Cut some holes in the covers. I hot glued some window screening over the holes to keep the bugs out. Helps with the air flow.

    You shouldn't do that. The worms can actually reconstruct your documents and get sensitive info. Really well formatted and narrated video. I wish all informative videos were made like this. Direct and informative not wasting our tine with comments that have nithing to do with the subject matter like this one. Also, nice work re using perfectly good resources. Why isn't this lifestyle pounded into our heads since birth like other things are, say consuming things? Anyway yeah you sir are good example to follow. Let's have a little respect for all these resources that keep us alive and make our lives what they are.

    Nice presentation-- I would like to suggest to beginners to chop up your nitrogen food scraps as small as possible worms will use it quicker. I run my veggies and fruits, potato peels thru my chopper/juicer. Also I dont get any drainage and my worms are doing great. The drainage btw is leachate not to be confused with worm tea you have to brew the castings with water to get true worm tea.

    @ima14yearoldmechanic Tough question. At first I spray it with a squirt bottle every time I feed. Later on, everything gets too wet and there is great 'worm poop tea' in the bottom container that I use with the plants. As of about a week ago, (mid January,2012) I added another container with holes drilled and a fresh batch of paper. The original container is just about done and the worms are looking for someplace fresh to move. So I give them another container to go up into

    My worms always end up with some potting soil in the container at some point. Banana peels, dried first, are a favorite food along with corn meal. Leaf lettuce trimmings also go quickly. They also get some crushed egg shell mixed in. Always learning more ways to keep them going. David

    i have been experimenting in my rasberry bushs, i place flat rocks around so worms can get under them and hide, as well as beetles and other creatures, because i want it to be a natural place according to the ecosystem. i have gone as far as burying my compost material in the back close around, dig up the sod, place it under the sod and repack it. i would like to collect the worms and start growing them. so this video is really great!

    The liquid and the old 'dirt' is all gold. Goes as a side dressing for vegetables, or a great addition to what gets passed off as 'seed starting mix', which here in Georgia is mostly just pine bark and pine needles ground up. Pretty much worthless, but mixed with the worm castings suddenly grows great young plants.

    • @djrramsey
      @djrramsey  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Pat Mamo I have cut sevral 2-3" square holes in the lids. I hot glued some window screening over the holes to keep the bugs out. I buy a lb of worms every fall and spread through my 3 tubs (they fit on a 4 ft shelf with lots of free area). After that it is a race between the worms reproducing and me feeding to my fish. I win, but it takes a year to run the numbers down to where I need to get them resupplied. They would do better if I was more consistent with feeding.

    • @GrowAndEatThis
      @GrowAndEatThis 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The worms need airholes in the containers somewhere. The lid is fine. I usually drill some holes on the top sides of the containers on the short ends. That way I can stack a couple of bins on top and still get airflow.

    What stops the worms going through the holes at the bottom

    • @GrowAndEatThis
      @GrowAndEatThis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bottom container is always the bottom container. It has no holes in it. The worms are always in the container above it. The bottom container collects the excess liquid that will happen, along with some amount of worm castings.

    @michaelbaker2927 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wonderful to the point presentation!
    1. A whole lot less dirt and mess because I currently "buy" my worms and put them in a jar of water for a couple hours to clear out their system of dirt I don't want my prized tropical fish exposed to and this way it's all nutrition.
    2. I can't think of better use of the bills I get in the mail!
    Question: How fast is reproduction would you guess? Out of a starter of 100 red worms, how many off spring should be expected monthly for instance?

    • @djrramsey
      @djrramsey  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Under optimal conditions, mature worms for me will roughly double in numbers in a month. Then it holds like that for a couple of months. Then it will just take off. I buy 1000 worms once a year. I pull out a bunch of worms every day for my fish. Takes about a year for the worm numbers to fall enough that I replenish with another 1000 and start the whole process over.

    • @djrramsey
      @djrramsey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I end up with a lot of holes on the sides just under the lid. As high as possible. The tub that has cutouts on the top don't work if I want to stack. They get covered up. I never really thought about it, but the worm bins are on the upper shelves of a 4 ft rack. The rest of the rack is for starting seedlings or hydroponic tubs for growing lettuce. To help control the fruit flies and such there is a small fan keeping the air moving. That would also have the air moving around more with the worm bins.

    Do they lay egg in the paper?

    • @djrramsey
      @djrramsey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As food is added and the worms and bacteria eat, the paper turns into compost and earth worm castings. The worms rapidly grow in numbers, so egg laying is not a problem.

  • @djrramsey
    @djrramsey  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    a google search of 'what do earthworms eat' gives a lot of sites that have the scientific info of exactly what earthworms eat. Basically they eat the bacteria and organisms that eat decaying organic matter. Fecal matter would certainly be included. But, all things in moderation. I would imagine the soil around the base of an outhouse would be full of worms. Don't know where you are really going with this question, but 'be careful' comes to mind.

    • @AtlantaTerry
      @AtlantaTerry 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Be careful with that "fecal matter" statement. Otherwise people might be tempted to use their own! What is OK is litter from rabbits. Litter from many animals such as chickens needs to first decompose due to a high ammonia content. Find a local owner of horses and ask for some old "aged" stuff.

    I mean you can visit your nearest Walmart or Bass pro shop they sell worms I found some Earth worms this morning around 3 am since it's raining they're trying to find a better spot.
    I gotta see if I can find a bin to keep my worms in right now I have them in a plastic container till I wake up later then I'm gonna find something to store them in till I get out to Walmart next week.

      @djrramsey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You do not want to feed so much that the food molds. I put in veggie scraps like carrot scrapings, banana peels, green bean trimmings, conr cobs etc every couple of days. I sprinkle some corn meal over the top at least once a week. More often when the veggie scraps are nearly gone. If the uneaten pile of veggies stacks up I will put a black plastic bag over the top of the veggies to help hold in the moisture. Set up your worms and you will learn to tell what and when. Remember they need moist soil and food.

    I have seen many other videos on worms (in my case, vermicomposting) and you need to add more than newspaper and a few banana peels for success with worms. Coconut coir or peat moss should also be added to the paper clippings as well as some coarse material, such as sand. Earthworms need to eat some course material in order to aid in digestion.

    @ima14yearoldmechanic Don't mix. If you want 2 kinds of worms have 2 different cultures. Nightcrawlers leave a nasty thick slime every where. Your fish will not like that. Obviously if you feed too much and it is molding, take it out. Takes a while to learn how much your worms will eat.

      Works great. I have been doing this for many years. Getting harder to come up with the starter paper. No newspaper in our area and most 'mail' comes in the email now. So I add a lot of cut up cardboard and some peat moss or potting mix. Worms still seem to be happy.

    • @djrramsey
      @djrramsey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Xplus001 I think the oatmeal would be too much once you added the moisture. Could turn into a ugly moldy mess. Try leaves, old grass clippings (after they have browned up and not hot), cut up cardboard. Some packages I get have grey paper for padding that is like unwaxed butcher paper. Works great. Or just use some potting mix that isn't mostly pine chips.

    • @djrramsey
      @djrramsey  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Opedanderson I do add more paper as the old paper turns into soil and castings. As the castings grow you can tell what they look like. Easiest way is to just feed one side of the tub. The worms will migrate to that side. Scoop out the castings and refill with fresh material. Then feed the middle to get the worms started moving to the other side. When they get moving get them to the new side. Then harvest the other side. Back and forth works for a long time.

      Time to start over. Gather as many worms as possible and rinse them off in a aquarium net or colander or something to get the mites off the worms. Try to get all the media off, it will be full of eggs. I do not know of any way to get rid of the mites that doesn't also kill the worms. Sorry.
